Q & A to myself about the fifth Urban Trash Super Heroes competition, Trash 'n' rolla.

I tried to write a meaningful article about what went on at the competition this year, but I lacked the inspiration. So, instead of the stereotypical writing about writers block, I just interviewed myself.

UTSH 5 Q: How come you decided to hold UTSH again this year?

A: To be quite honest, after announcing that I will be doing the Urban Trash Super Heroes again this year after a one year hiatus, I felt a slight discomfort in my stomach. Do I really need this again, for the fifth time in six years?

A house full of people, trying to get sponsors to endorse a comp in a market as small as ex-Yugoslavia, a huge cell phone bill, countless e-mails, juggling my work and the competition, always being afraid that bad weather would mess everything up? Oh, and the fact that I always end up writing the report from my own contest.

But somehow, everything just started falling into place as the competition neared. The sponsors, the competitors, the chosen spots, so I just decided to play along and let everything unwind by itself.

Q: You always have a film theme on your promotional posters and flyers. How did that come by?

A: This year, the name and the theme for the poster was chosen by my long term parter in pretenciousness and skating, Igor Slokovic Iggy,  after the movie Rock'n'rolla. This was the second time in four years that a film not made by Stanley Kubrick made the cut and Trash 'n' rolla was born.

The first competition in 2004. was called just Urban Trash Super Heroes. The second one was UTSH 2:A clockwork trash, the third one Full metal Trash and thr forth one T.R.A.S.H. (and the poster was designed after the M.A.S.H. Poster).

I love Kubrick's films, and this serves as a sort of slight rebranding every year, I just guess it makes sense. It's interesting, and all the skaters from all over Croatia and the region still know that it's a UTSH series competition.

Q: Who came this year?

A: Well, almost all croatian skaters over 16 years old were there, I think there was like 20 people from Hungary, a hungarian kid came with his dad and competed, a few guys from Serbia, from Slovenia two or three cars of skaters...people from Austria, and even the Kaltik guys from Scotland, that came with the Hungarians.

I best use this for international shout outs then...Thanks to Chaz Sands and Horn for coming and Andy Wegener for sending them over and thanks to the Be-Mag guys for the rat tail hook up. But, a big thank you most deffinitely goes to Leo Donhauser of the Ignitionshop.com infamy, my long time friend and competition sponsor, contest judge and overall great guy. Big thanks also go to Emanuel Radak, owner of Mantra, long time friend and sponsor of the comp and Marko Pajnik from Slovenia, great guy and great contest organizer (Marko, I want another Two cities comp soon!). And the last international shout-out but certainly not the east goes to Viktor Kondrat of Skateworld, a most dedicated great guy that always supports by bringing in a big crowd of hungarian skaters.

UTSH 5Q: What was the level of skating like this year?

A: Well, I hope the edit, made exclusively for Be-Mag will show it properly...there was a lot of spinning into tricks, rail transfers and difficult switch-ups.

Q: Who won?

Well, for the second time in five years, it was a local kid. Tin Hadjiomerspahic (I know, a bitch to pronounce in english) won with overall great skating on all three spots, and his topsoul to disaster 450 backside royale revert on the 12 flat 12 rail was just the cherry on top of the cake.

But, he faced fierce competition from Chaz Sands, Horn, Bela Tasnadi, Zima Balasz and his own older brother Sanjin so it was quite of a run for the 250 euro cash prize.

Q: What was the afterparty like?

A: It was in a club in the city, but when I got there, everybody was drinking in the park in front of the club. I missed it cause I had to work on Sunday. I heard later that it was great fun. My guests, who's names I won't mention, got so drunk they forgot where their car was.

Q: So, was it worth it?

A: After seeing the pics of the contest that Bobo and Marko took, it hit me. Yes. And for the same reasons it's worth the hassle every year. People who were there really enjoyed it. They were smiling, laughing and having a good time.

Kids who speak different languages met, skated, drank and shared stories together. They made new friends.

I know it must sound pathetic, but I'm glad I helped with that. Rollerblading gave me life long friends here, and from foreign countries, it helped shape me into the person I am today.

Q: Last shout outs?

A: Iggy, my designer and consultant in all matters rollerblading. Tomislav Vukelic, Leo Donhauser and Nikola Gereci for judging the contest and all other help and support they provided, Marko Gereci and Bogdan Kijanica for the photos, Mario Mlakar and his film crew for filming and editing.

My cousin Anja and her mom and dad for hooking up the skaters with accomodation for years now.

Be-Mag and Roll-o-Rama for media support.

The sponsors: Be-Mag, 4x4, Viciuos, NIMH, GC,  Razors, Mantra, Ignitionskateshop.com

My mom, for understanding what rollerblading meant to me when I was growing up and for not letting me forget what was most important then.

And my girlfriend for turning my life around and breathing new life into me.

Rollerblading fucking rules! See you soon in Zagreb.
