Strain is the debut DVD release from Ally McMullan of Open Mind Productions. Based in the South-West of England, but covering much further afield, Strain features Guy Crawford, Si Coburn, Tom Martin and Ty Brisset, as well as uncovering the combined skating prowess of Welshies Josh Jones and Sean Escott. Josh and Sean have a joint profile which kicks off the film in good style, with an array of tech rail tricks on some previously unseen UK spots. What follows is arguably the best section, a documentary style exposé of Seven days in Barcelona. While trips to Barcelona have become pretty played out, the way in which Ally has put the section together, including lots of voiceovers and random non-skating footage, makes it very watchable. This section isn't so much focused on smacking you in the face over and over again with sick tricks, but more showing some cool skating inter-mixed with a bunch of friends having a great time in Barcelona (where incidentally, the authorities have just introduced a €3000 fine for rollerblading!)
Si Coburn has a profile which highlights his large vocabulary of tricks, not only on grinds but also stair gaps, and Guy Crawford also has a very nice profile featuring lots of stylish varied skating on random obstacles in his hometown of Bristol and further afield. For the star-spotters out there, Leon Humphries, Alex Jones, Chaz Sands, Albert Hooi, Conor O'Brien, Iain Mcloud, Oli Benet, and Brandon Campbell are just a few of the other well-known names to feature. With a collection of funny B-roll footage and Barcelona outtakes in the extras, there's a good hours worth of footage in total. If you're looking for a skate DVD that features a large variety of skaters and styles, as opposed to an emo / hiphop / music-based theme DVD, then look no further than Strain. The Premiere recently went down in Oxford, and although Ally was held-up by last-minute hitches, when he finally did arrive, the film was received very well and everybody seemed to leave with a smile on their faces.
