It's a lot of work to make a DVD, even when one puts all of their energy into it. But when you have to focus on finishing high school/getting into college, a relationship with your girlfriend of two years, your own skating and other aspects of life and work, things can be ever harder.

Anthony VelezIt's a lot of work to make a DVD, even when one puts all of their energy into it. But when you have to focus on finishing high school/getting into college, a relationship with your girlfriend of two years, your own skating and other aspects of life and work, things can be ever harder. In making SLIDESHOW I found myself with about ten seconds of free time per day, between traveling to and from the six main states the video focuses on, connecting with everywhere else and editing the DVD my schedule was tight. But that's enough complaining.

SLIDESHOW was made with the viewer in mind! I am a big fan of originality so I tried to touch on the most original aspects of skating around me, as well as the most original terrain and original use of unoriginal terrain. Lately people have been considering the latest "CLASSIC" skate video to be the video that has about 1% of rollerblading's offering. How can a video be so great if most of the video has skaters strictly using only less than half of their skate??? It's weird how so many aspects of skating are sparsely included in most DVDs. I tried to give light to every aspect of skating and though I did not cover skating 100% I feel like I covered it a lot more than others have lately.

I tried not to adhere to cliche trends excessively, so though the video may have artistic shots of the skaters' faces, you won't get sick of looking at them over and over again because they are used in moderation and not as constant filler/distraction. As far as filler footage goes, I tried to avoid that altogether. With an industry full of skaters that either give their weekly allowance up to buy a DVD, beg their parents to get it for them or even have to get their own hustle on and work for their funds, I felt that "FILLER" clips had to be averted! It's already 2006 and I watch DVDs and notice tricks that were done the same, if not better, years ago, so I tried to keep things up to par with tomorrow's skating, clip for clip.

Trevor JohnsonThough many of the skaters in SLIDESHOW may have recently come out in other videos, their skating may not be at all like that of what you've seen. With making any type of video project, administration needs to be taken in order to give the featured persons direction. So I tried to bring my vision to the screen by sharing my insight and ideas with the skaters in order to realize footage that would not have existed otherwise.

There's so much to be said about a project that cost thousands of dollars to save from a computer crash alone.but I think that I'll let the DVD do the rest of the talking. Be on the lookout for coverage of the SLIDESHOW WORLD PREMIERE as well as a BE-MAG REVIEW!

I like hearing everybody's opinion, but until everybody that states their opinion actually anaylzes the video on their own, I think they should realize how dumb it is to hate on one of the only people that does something for skating.
Thanks have a great day.

I heard MOM sucked and I heard that anything that Velez breathes blows. NYC has yet to produce a good skate video using NYC skaters. Except B Unique, but B Unique's only good rider from NYC is Fish. It would be nice to see a good section for Paz and Soto. Yannes, too. He beasts.

I agree 100% with Tyler Edwards. I like how you talked about originality when I was told that you jocked EGO with the shit talking about the people in the video. I don't know how true that is though cause I haven't seen it.

I didnt read anything at all from what people said........actually I read what tyler said. im tired and Im about to go to sleep so w/e. All I know is videos like "slideshow" are hurting rollerblading not helping it. I dont care what you think, this video is not well put together and its really not good, as rollerbladers if we want to go anywhere we need to step it up. that means you dont give the camera to a fellow rollerblader to film a trick and that means you simply leave the video making to people who actually do it at a somewhat proffesional level and right now theres only like 2 people actually putting out movies who are at that level and one of them compeltly fucked up and let broskow film half of his last movie. o i guess theres clip.......but have you seen there new trailer EWWW shitty filters and they completly stole somebody elses style....sorry tangent....It actually sadness me be-mag which I really respect from a print point of view would even bother promoting such a video. seriosuly we need to drop all the crap out of rollerblading and let the top dogs prosper who are actually doign something good, so they can grow and the industry can get bigger. but kids are too stupid and busy starting up there own clothing "companies" and making there own videos to realize this......sorry im ranting...... anyways I dont care i dont even rollerblade anymore....end

im an asshole, really you dont need to tell me or bother saying anything along those lines its a waste of your breath.

APRIL 15th 2006 is the date, SLIDESHOW, will be shown publicly for the first time (see “premiere”). It’s a rollerblading DVD, and all rollers are invited cause who likes watching skate vids by themselves? So compare it to the 1st time (and probably the last) mom said it was cool to have Tom, Dick, and Harry over to watch “insert any influential video title here.” Remember that intro montage, how you couldn’t help but ooh and ahh at the tricks, Tom even shouted, “Wow, he laced that pornstar perfect.” Then you all laughed when your mom all of sudden went and offered soda/made sure that it wasn’t a porno playing. I mean, don’t get me wrong, cause I’m all for a nice ass jogging by followed by a truspin whatever.

Alright let me stop there before I lose any of those who made it this far… What I’m really trying to say is; you knew even before the video was over, (even though the skates were probably already strapped) that you wouldn’t look at that gap/rail/ledge/ANYTHING you’ve been eyeing, the same. It all of a sudden looked smaller. Then a few falls later you realized, you might have bit off more than you could chew. But unless your name is Brooke Howard Smith and possess the ability to make falling cool, nobody cares about how you almost landed blah blah blah. You could call it quits and then look forward to losing sleep over it, but that last attempt was too damn close to walk now. So you talk shit to yourself, turn the volume up on your shuffle and the moment you make it happen, the world stops, and the crowd goes wild.... then a hand waves in front of the camera a few times and while you’re rolling on top of the world, your friend’s cuing up the instant replay.
That is if you’re lucky to have a friend with a camera, maybe even lucky enough to have a friend with a camera who puts tricks just like yours to music for all of us to watch, enjoy, and be inspired by. In fact, I hope all of you out there get the chance to watch a vid and have your name pop up over that trick you landed. But before you go and give yourself 100% credit for it, don’t forget that 1 trick that made you say, “Today I’m not going home until I land….. Cause somewhere in this rollerblading community, (you know, the one that spans this entire planet,) that trick of yours has a good shot of helping one or 1,000 of us make our next session count more than the last.

What’s funny to me, is the effort I put into writing something that shined some light on how DVD’s, just like SLIDESHOW, play such an important role in how we roll, I probably would have made my point just the same with just 1 sentence. “Pop in your favorite skate video then go skate.” It really is as simple as that. Sure, blood, sweat, and blood was required to make SLIDESHOW what it is, but that’s not what I’m asking you to think about when you watch it. I just want you to sit back, actually you better get comfy on the edge of your seat, and let it be known the next time you skate, how much you appreciated the video.

Thank you for however much time you spent reading this, I promise you’ll feel like I made it up to you after seeing SLIDESHOW.

April 13th, 2006 @ 20:54 - by intense1 intense1

You're always talking about how rollerblading needs to step up and make a impact on the people outside of rollerblading. All these opinions and essays you right on be-mag. Before you go and do that you should learn how to fuckin film. Learn how to make a proper video then show it to people. Jesus christ.
