We are bringing you a Behind the Scenes look of the Humble Beings DVD. Casey and Steve give you an insight on how the filming and production happened and what they are planning. Take a look.
Casey and I started filming for Humble Beings immediately after we finished Not Another Skate Video in the winter of ’05. Through our experiences of making the Big Break and Not Another Skate Video DVD’s it was important to us that this time around we had full control of every aspect of the production, from filming the first clips to sending the final copies to shops. We were able to put a lot of time and energy into Humble Beings and it shows in the final product.
One of the key features that we wanted the DVD to express is how all of us in it are from different areas, but we are all good friends and we all actually skate together. A vast majority of Humble Beings were filmed by Casey and me, which resulted in a consistent high level of quality in the clips that were used. We had a lot of fun times this past year traveling around California skating, filming, and hanging out with our friends.
Since I’m from Sacramento and Casey lives there we knew originally that there would be sections of some of the guys that are up there. Once we finished helping Sean Keane film for We Are Valo, he started stocking up lots of footage with Casey and making trips down here to SLO to skate with me. Dustin Dixon and Andy Johnson both were always finding cool new spots to skate and decided that they’d like to combine forces to make a section together. Will Cosgrove gets better and better every time he skates and he’s truly been making a name for himself at all of the Nor-Cal street comps in recent months, so he was super juiced to lay down his first profile. After Casey finished filming for his section in Face the Music, which focused mostly on his tech skating, he wanted to make a section of him self that really showed how well rounded of skater he is. The few of us who saw the section right after it was made felt that it turned out so amazing that we were able to talk him into putting it as the final profile in the film. He’s very modest about his skating but I’m confident in saying that this section beyond doubt solidifies the fact that he is one of the best rollerbladers in California.

Early on, Ross Kuhn and Sapata Fofana Dura visited us from Portland, Oregon a couple times and ended up moving to Sacramento for a few months. They both put together hard sections and I guarantee that you’ll be seeing much more from these two in the near future.
We had the privilege of staying with Russell Day in San Diego a couple times and he sent us a bunch of footage too. It’s so weird to me how this kid hasn’t already blown up, being that he’s from SD, seeing how good he is, and what a unique personality and style that he has; this will surely be the section that does it for him. This kid brings new life to spots down there that you’ve seen many of the “super” pros skate, and then he continues to murder these places showing that he’s more than capable of hanging with the big boys.
We’ve wanted to be able to film a section of Victor Arias for a number of years now and were able to amass enough clips to make a section of him which really accentuates his smooth and precise style which contrasts with some of the more “hyphy” sections you’ve seen of him in the recent past.
Down here in San Luis Obispo I was able to spend many hours cruising around the neighboring beach towns with Jeff Norton to find numerous unique and untouched spots which he was able to apply his solid skating skills to for his section.
Joey Ihara lives in Fresno which is about the same distance from Sacramento as it is from SLO, so he was able to visit both of us a few times and we were able to make it out into the central valley a few times to put together a smooth little section of him.
In the course of filming, many original members of the legendary Nor-Cal crew JSF along with some new blood became motivated to put together another section much like the ones seen in the old Video Groove Battle My Crew series. Scott Moore was a standout among them and was able to lay down enough hammers to warrant his own profile to wrap up the Bay Area portion of the film.
The concept that we came up with to tie the film together was to take advantage of Dustin’s artistic skills by having him paint a big ‘ol map which included all of the towns where the skaters with profiles are from and then to have the footage for the montages also be of the people from those areas who didn’t have full sections. It was funny to see Dustin’s reaction to how well this worked out in the end because he didn’t fully understand the way Casey and I envisioned incorporating the map throughout the film.
The title Humble Beings comes from the company that Casey and I are starting along with our good friend Paul Miranda called Humble. Humble Beings is our way of describing our selves and our diverse group of friends that we surround ourselves with. This film is our way of subtly introducing the new brand and many of the people that will be the beacons for the products and ideals associated with it. I’m moving back up to Sacramento in a couple days so this summer we’ll be filming for the first Humble Team video and producing the premier line of clothing which will be available next winter. Stay tuned to www.humblebeings.com for more bonus edits from this most recent venture and information on all the rest which are drawing nearer in the future.
Stay humble,
Steve Kerr
