We are glad to present you a full force interview with Nick Uhas. Nick has been touring around a lot lately and we were glad to get several images for this interview. Watch out for more coverage from the touring later on.
The Uhas Interview
Typical
Name: Nicholas A. Uhas Nick Uhas for short
Age: 21
Location: Columbus , Ohio
Occupation/University: Full time student at The Ohio State University, bio major
Sponsors: Rollerblade, OKE Clothing, SDSF skate shop, Hightech Media
Years skating: simple question, but it’s not this easy. I went strong into skating for about 5 years, got into wrestling then got back into skating full on in college for 3 years now... so 8 maybe 9.
The Deep Shit
Why do you skate? This is a super deep question, but I skate for some many reasons and all to me are equally important. I skate one because it’s been the most appealing sport since I saw VG7. Skating is such a unique sport that allows creativity and competition while at the same time athleticism. It seems to define my personality quite well. To top it off it allows people to do the craziest stunts and tricks that no other extreme sport could come close to.
What are your thoughts on rollerblading: our industry, the skaters who represent our sport and the direction rollerblading is heading trick wise? The main thing you always hear about our industry is how it’s dying and all negative aspects. While I do think the industry is at a low point, I think it is just a cycle like all other action sports. Skateboarding was not near as big as it was 5-6 years ago. Rollerblading just hasn’t had it’s 2nd peak of popularity yet. It’s just a matter of time before the average person realizes how insane and “cool” rollerblading has become. This will be the time when no one can deny the fact that rollerblading is the new big thing and being caught saying it was “gay” would only make the commenter sound “gay”. The skaters that represent our sport are the ones who I believe are skating for the best reason and have the most heart and love for rollerblading. All pros either don’t get paid or barely get paid enough to live even with a second job. So the ones still standing are by far the ones who are not into this sport for money or the wrong reasons. Props to all the pros busting their asses and risking their bodies for injury. The direction skating is heading is straight up, every year skating is getting bigger, more tech and more stylish. I'm so excited for skating and the limitless possibilities that skaters keep showing us. This is the one area that is reassuring to me because this is the fuel for the public to make rollerblading the next biggest sport again. Also on the topic of industry, rollerblading and all extreme sports are supported and sponsored by all other
corporate and large business; to keep a sport like this alive it takes all these other businesses outside of rollerblading. So when skaters begin to allow new rollerblading companies into the scene and let go of this undercover secret society of rollerblading, that is when skating will grow again, be “cool” again to the public. This will provide those companies more business to pay their pros and give more opportunity to the people have been paying their dues while the industry has been in its low cycle.
What does the “professionalism” of being a pro skater mean to you? Has reaching that level affected how you skate, how you view skating, and your behavior in and around skating? Professionalism to me just means that you have been given the job of marketing yourself for a company or business. Just like any other job, you have to be respectful and always be aware that your decisions affect how people think of you and that in turn reflects on the companies that you ride for. Better behavior, better business. Reaching this level has actually made me just more of an outspoken person, trying to meet and talk to everyone I meet when I’m out skating. I've always been an open person trying to meet everyone, but now I’ve just turned that up a notch. My skating actually has not changed much at all, the only thing is that I now skate with more juice, because when people come to watch me skate I build off of that.
What does loyalty mean to you in rollerblading, especially being sponsored by a company that isn’t as highly favored as it used to be? Loyalty is very key in this sport. There are many opportunities that arise because of loyalty. It’s just hard now because it seems skaters are getting dropped left and right. The only thing I can do is be grateful for what I have and keep skating my ass off because there will come a time when my body is too old for this craziness. Also I’d have to say thanks to all of my sponsors who have treated me very well. RB, Nick Skally, Richie, you (Eric Brown), Jesse Shoup, Matt Grimes, Geoff, SDSF, and Mac.
How has your competitive nature affected your skating? My competitive nature hasn’t affected my skating, it has defined it. I try not to be that guy always competing in a session and killing the fun, so I always ask the skater if they are down to battle. I get so juiced of competing and it drives me to learn new tricks, this is how I have fun. Competing doesn’t have to be work, it’s just a mind set.
Inspirations: who, what, when, where? My dad, Victor Uhas, he has been the most influential person in my life. I know this interview is about skating but he has formed me into the person I am today that is directly related to how I skate, my attitude, and my behavior. As for skaters I am inspired by, all those who pushed me to compete with them or myself whether they knew it or not . Last I know its what everyone says but I love watching the pros skate like Haffey, , Vinny, the Kelsos etc... they are the best at what they do.
What does skating need… what doesn’t skating need? Skating needs a company or companies to make skating appealing to the public, like how skating boarding has done. We need a person to drive our sport to this position, like a Tony hawk. Someone with more than just talent but a figure head to represent us in a positive light. Skating doesn’t need anymore negativity or black sheep type promotions, it’s the absolute death to the sport, the industry, and most importantly the fun.
What is the difference in motivation between skating in Ohio and California in your eyes? Ohio is a place that is home to me. Everyone has their place, it just so happens mine is Columbus, Ohio. This is where my comfort zone is; this is where my family, friends, and non-skating friends live. Without these things I can’t muster the motivation to skate. Anyone who has moved can relate I’m sure. Living in Ohio has been so good for me, when I
skate with people who have been my friends for years I feel so much more safe to progress and try new tricks, also skating is 100,000 times more fun when your with your true friends. Now all of this is not to say I don’t have these kinds of friends in San Diego, where I live, I just didn’t have it ALL there, but I do love being a buckeye in Ohio.
The Chill Shit
What have you been up to all summer? Wow, my summer has been packed! I started out skating locally and filming for a few weeks, then the craziness started. I first went to the Windy City Riot in Chicago which was a two day comp; skated so hard both days and took second place behind my boy Jeff Dalnas. Then I came home for 3 days and headed up to NYC for the ECTSC6 where I took second place again. Then day I got home Kayd Anderson from Sydney, flew into Columbus, Ohio and we started this tour which was originally for ASA since this would be my first year to compete as a ASA pro. However, ASA was almost eliminated from North America, so we turned this into a skating tour for getting clips, pictures, having fun, and meeting new people all over the . I think we’re going to turn most everything into BE-MAG for a project, like a section in the DVD. We started in Columbus, went to Cleveland, Chicago, St. Louis, Dallas, Phoenix, and now I’m at Woodward West for a few days writing this. All the details will be revealed on BE-MAG.com later. The tour then goes to Norcal then Socal. Once Kayd leaves to go home, Nate Szana and I are driving back to Ohio together hitting up Norcal again and skating with James St. Ours, Victor, Ivan, Vinny and that whole scene along the way. After that we’re heading to Denver, Colorado to skate this park in the mountains thing where you camp, skate, and drink for
3 days in the mountains and all the skateparks in the area.
Future plans? Skating Ohio with all my friends, skating in the Steel Valley Meltdown at Vertigo Skatepark (same park as the Bittercold Showdown) then the Hoedown this fall. As for the basics, I just want keep skating hard as long as I can before I start graduate school.
Why do rollerbladers talk so much shit to each other, especially online and how much are they going to talk shit about this interview? hahahahaha rollerbladers and every other sport. We did the same shit in wrestling. I guess some people feel tough sitting behind a computer where no one will ever find out who they are or what they said. as far as this interview I’m sure someone out there will have tons of shit to talk about, hahaha but that’s fine.... cant please everyone
Hobbies/lazy activities. Frisbee golf, love going to the movies where its air conditioned, eating organic foods.Shout Outs and Thanks You’s: Victor and Carolyne Uhas, RB, Richie V, Nick Skally, Geoff Acres, the SDSF house, Eric Brown, Jesse Shoup, Oke, Hightech Media, Hawke for filming so well, Ivan, Ohio for being so good to me, Ohio crew, and anyone who ever supported me!!!!

okay, yeah sorry nick, i got carried away with your skating...this is you time to shine..so i apologize about the intenseness to which i trashed talked....but i will say this......(nothing to do with nick, just thought it would be appropriate...)) rollerblade is not a good company...okay..their entire team was basically one of the best. Some of you might say ...well their running a business u know, they had to drop some of the best rollerbladers in the world so they could save money....well, the problem with that is, the only reason why rollerblade was selling skates in the aggressive skate market was because they had such a badass team...if u dont believe me, look at how at every contest about two or 3 yrs ago, every fucking person was wearing the chris farmer apparel, then how crazy they went when he switched clothes....same with broskow etc....so rollerblade was probably making plenty of cash to support a few pros....but now their not....instead, they cut their entire team...now they are sponsoring tons of upcoming kids...but see, ( this has nothing to do with nick) some of those kids will only get so far....and its just not reasonable and fair if rollerblade is just making this propoganda shit in their last few ads , (its subtle, this propoganda) saying their sponsoring all these kids...okay, this is one of the many flaws adam johnson speaks about in the whole black market dvd. its that co's are sponsoring a bunch of unknowns or up and comers when it would actually be omre reasonable for them to have a team that is making a decent living and promoting their product....thats what i have to say about rollerblade the company...im just trying to stick up for some of the best athletes in the world who are getting paid pennies and putting their lives on the line.. so if u dont believe me, i really dont care, because this is just my opinion or rather my observation on one of the many weaknesses in the industry that people are scared to talk about.....i hope this makes some sense...sorry if my thoughts are fragmented and not pieced together, i dont really have any writing skills....sorry nick for me being a dick...so yeah.....umm, KILL A REPUBLICAN.....- mark wojda

im going to take the less philosophical approach than hoch. first off all we cant really blame mark he is a kid. acting his age and whining on a internet message boards just like all of the 15 year old grommets do here in columbus. the difference is, is that mark is good and well, i thought a little bit more mature than this, but i guess i had the wrong idea. all in all its more of a loss of respect for someone who is very good for how young they are. ps. Mark dont be a little fucking pusssy and talk shit on a message board, drive up to columbus and say it to his face. wait, are you old enough to drive yet? well nevermind then
