So, I’ve seen a couple of threads related to the new Mindgame video, Accidental Machines, and there seems to be some disinformation out there, so I asked Michael and Stuff to give me a forum to set a few things straight...
So, I’ve seen a couple of threads related to the new Mindgame video, Accidental Machines, and there seems to be some disinformation out there, so I asked Michael and Stuff to give me a forum to set a few things straight. They were happy to oblige, and suggested that we take it a step further and create an “In The Know” for Accidental Machines. So, here we are.
But before we start, I’ve compiled a list of FAQ regarding the movie. After you read them, if you have a question that hasn’t been answered, please feel free to ask me. I will try to check the thread at least once a day to keep things moving. However, I may not be able to answer all of your questions, as I won’t be giving away all of the details about the new video. Thanks.
Frequent asked questions:1. How’s the video coming? (I have gotten this question at least three times a day for the last three months)
Well, the editing is done. I finished at 8am on Tuesday, October 10th after almost 48 hours straight.2. Is it good?
I’m very happy with it.3. When can I see the video?
We are having our World Premiere in Newport Beach, CA on November 2nd. If you will be in the area, you can email sales@emagdnim.com and arrange to pick up a ticket at our office. For those of you not in the area, you might have the opportunity to attend one of our shop premiere being held worldwide the weekend of November 17th, 18th, and 19th. 4. When can I get the video?The video should be available at most retailers on November 17th. However, many are taking pre-orders now.5. So, if you’re done with the video, why will it take so long to get to shops?
Because I’m only done with the editing. After the editing comes the export and then the compression. Both of these steps take a lot of time. Next, the compressed video is QC’d by the authoring house and encoded and encrypted with the menu. Then, we get a check disc, which we play on multiple DVD players and computers to make sure it plays without trouble. When we give the authoring house the OK, they generate a DLT, which we bring to the replication house. (We choose to go the DLT route instead of DVD-R, because DVD-R masters are notorious for problems. They don’t play on all players, and some times there are quality issues.) We bring the DLT to the replication house and they make a glass master, which they generate one DVD print of the video from. We then take this DVD and check it on multiple players. If it looks good, we give them the green light and they go into production; replicating, printing, and packaging the DVDs that they then ship to our warehouse. Yeah, so that’s why. We have a longer process than most, but you can pretty much guarantee that our DVD will work when you get it, and that the quality is the absolute best that today’s DVD technology can offer.
6. Who has sections? I’ve heard things…Farmer, Aragon, Fish, Don, Dustin, Aaron, and Ben Schwab all have sections, but Dustin and Aaron don’t have traditional ones. DL has larger responsibilities outside of skating nowadays, and it just wasn’t possible for him to film something in the way of his past sections. For him, we designed something a little more personable, and less trick/trick/trick -- more of a reflection of what his skating is about today. I think it’s a powerful section, and true fans of DL will appreciate how he can give a special vibe to even the simplest things.
Aaron’s original intention was to film a full section, but he fell victim to multiple injuries throughout the year. While most of the team was filming for their parts, Aaron was spending it recovering from various ankle and foot issues. In the end, he banged out some great tricks, but his section is very short and was filmed over the course of about a week and a half.
7. Do you expect me to believe that the other guys can really hold together a Mindgame video by themselves?Yes.
Dustin and Aaron have no doubt been the focus of our previous videos, but if you’ve been paying attention, you may have noticed that the team has been in the midst of a transition for the last three years. Farmer and Aragon have been being groomed as the “spiritual” successors to our longtime leaders, and since then, Billy, Don, and Ben have each come to add something to the team that it hadn’t had before. It’s about evolution, not reproduction. Each of these skaters -- if not already -- will have a profound effect on skating, and their video sections are part of that contribution. This video won’t be like any of our others (just like all of our others), because it’s an expression of the team we have at that moment in time, and what they are doing at that moment in time. And this is a good time.
8. How long is the video?
About 55 minutes.9. Are there skits?Yes.10. Do you care that a lot of people hate your skits?
Not really. I think most people think they hate the skits for the same reason that they think Schwab skates exactly like Farmer. It’s because they heard it somewhere from a source that seemed more in-touch than them, and they decided to go along with it. Plus, for the people that really don’t like the skits, there will be a Play Only Skating option on the DVD.
11. Any extras?

Haha, I have to say this is a funny interview. I think he has a point there saying that a team evolves instead of reproducing, that's a wise lesson. I'm excited to see the film, I have no expectations at all and I'm curious to see how it turned out.
