Present Yourself
Hey my name’s Julian Coulter, I’m 24 and live in London in the UK. I started rollerblading in 1996 and it has been my passion for the past 12 years, ever since I learnt to grind the curb outside my house in those old rec skates we all had. I work all week and try to fill my evenings and weekends with skating, finding new spots and traveling whenever possible, which can be hard with the wet weather we’ve had here lately!

What setup are you skating right now and what do you like most about it?

I’m rolling on the Valo JJ1 Velcro model in black, with Ground Control Formula One frames, Senate anti rocker wheels, and outer wheels and bearings by UKskate.com.

The best thing about my setup is how I’ve customized the boot to find the perfect fit. I sawed the toe off the Valo boot to give my foot more space, then laced up the boot to stop the sides from flexing too much, so now it’s just right. Also the frames feel really controllable on grinds and solid, the anti-rocker wheels allow me to roll without catching the frame on stairs and stuff, and the UKskate wheels and bearings last ages.

What kind of clothing style are you into and what are your favorite items?

I mostly wear loose fitting jeans or trousers, both when I’m skating and when I’m not. On top I’ll usually wear something colorful, sometimes a skate brand but not always. My clothing style is probably more influenced by the fashion I see when I’m traveling abroad experiencing different cultures, or by the fashion of other freestyle sports like skiing and surfing, rather than just by what other rollerbladers wear. My favorite items are in amongst my collection of about 15 beanies… although hat hair sucks!

BS Royal - Munich

Can you tell us your top 10 music artists?
Man, that’s a hard one! Music is a big part of my life… I play the piano, guitar and mandolin and was in a band not long ago. I listen to Rock music a lot but I like all sorts of other things too. So you might catch me listening to a flamenco song followed by a classical piano piece and then a rock song or a house tune… and then going to an acoustic guitar gig. If I’m listening to music while skating then it’s gotta be something peaceful for the skatepark and rock music for hammer time! But if I had to pick my favorite artists then it would be something along the lines of this:

Foo Fighters
Muse
Led Zeppelin
Three Doors Down
James Holden
Nirvana
Bob Marley
Bob Dylan
Manu Chao
Ludovico Einaudi

Fishy - Vienna

Top 10 songs right now:

Muse - Bliss
Foo Fighters – Times Like These
Dire Straits – Brothers In Arms
Beatles – While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Vast - Touched
James Holden – Come to Me
Buena Vista Social Club – Chan Chan
The Shins – New Slang
Jon Swift – Run River
JS Bach - Toccata & Fugue in D Minor… (an organ piece which I’m trying to learn on the piano at the moment).

If Julian ever asks to move in with you, accept his offer straight away. There is no-one better at getting you juiced on a session. Julian, we need to move in together again!

Julian Coulter commenting on skating small spots to warm up

"I find it hard to skate things without a drop on one side"
