Sans Pretention is a rollerblading video from Europe with footage from many different countries such as France, Switzerland, Italy, the UK, Poland, Spain, Germany and some more. Being from Europe it is always something especially exciting for me when a European DVD is released. When I saw the first trailer on the Be-mag messageboard I was stoked and my expectations were running pretty high. I expected a very fast paced and aggressive video. The intro taught me different. A very slow Radiohead song with tricks in slow-motion is not exactly what gets me excited to see more. Don’t get me wrong, there are some serious hammers in the intro but I think they could have been presented in a better way.

Pierre Lelievre is the first profiled skater on this DVD. His skating is good but nothing too special. I think if some stuff – like a grind on a very short and low flat rail in a skatepark – would have been left away he would have left a better impression. But to be fair I have to say that he shows some big tricks, some technical tricks and that he ends his section with a really sick gap!

The Switzerland montage features Alex Broskow, Jona Messerli, Diego Guilloud, Stephan De Freitas and others. Stephan stands out with one of the sickest disaster Sweaties I have seen in a long time and a totally insane disaster Fishbrain. The whole section if full of really good tricks and I enjoyed it every time I watched it, only the song gets a bit annoying after hearing it for the third time.

Roman Abrate has definitely left an impression lately. He does everything, technical tricks, big gaps and huge square kinked drop rails. His control is amazing and this profile really caught my attention. Give him two more years to develop his style and he will be more than just outstanding. Following this great section you get to see the split section of Adrian Wallace, Matthias Ogger and Daniel Prell. All three of them are great skaters, but you just can’t let Matthias Ogger skate to the same song as Adrian Wallace because they are way too different. The tricks in this section are cool but you get to see the same spots way too often for this short period of time. My favourite skater in this split section is Daniel Prell due to his spot and trick selection.

Cyril Daniel is up next. He is one of these people that do the most insane tricks but they somehow always manage to look sketchy. Every time I see this guy skate I am reminded of BJ Bernhardt. If he had the style to match his craziness he would be absolutely untouchable. The highlight of this section is a Kindgrind on a drop ledge, on which you would for sure die if you fell off on the wrong side, and a Topsoul down a head-high stair ledge!

The USA montage is pretty good with a lot of different – but sometimes overshot – spots and skaters. After the USA montage you get to see Adrien Anne’s section. His section is packed with quality tricks. Adrien does so many unbelievable combos and he does the nicest grabbed Fastslides I have ever seen! Unfortunately the track used is very monotonous. The skating in the following French montage is impressive and kept me entertained even as I watched it for the third time.

Julien Cudot really surprised me with his section, I always thought that he is park-rat but I was wrong. Seeing grabbed BS Backslides and Truespin Mizous on nipple high rails was not what I expected. But this is not everything; he can also do technical stuff on handrails like Hurricane Topsoul, Fullcab True Topsoyale and 540 Truespin Mizou. What also impressed me a lot was a 360 Truespin Mizou to 360 Truespin Mizou 360 out. This is definitely the best profile on this DVD! After Julien there is a Euro montage to end the video. It shows skaters and spots from all over Europe. At the end you can say that the DVD is good but it is not one of the best out there. What really bugs me is not only that the camera was really shaky sometimes but also that the lens of the camera was often dirty as hell.

Speaking about doing ones homework... If you check out the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English under the word "outstanding" it clearly says that this means the same as "extremely good"! I think Roman is a great skater!
