Choose Your Genre Video Review - 06/03/23

Choose Your Genre CoverChoose Your Genre is the title of the Genre Wheels team DVD which is another Chris Majette production. When I hear Ma-jette’s name I’m always forced to think of Underestimated which I still regard as one of the best DVD’s ever. A lot of things have changed since these days though. If you need an example you just have to watch Underestimated.

After scanning the cover I had high expectations. Not too long ago the Kelso brothers had an article in Be-Mag. Julian Bah never disappointed me so far. Chris Cheshire was my favourite skater in Underestimated and I really looked forward to see how he has changed. Murda made his way from NY to Cali and he has made himself a big name. So let’s see if this DVD keeps what the cover promises.

With his section Colin Kelso proves that he deserves to have his own pro skate. He skates fast and stylish. I love the way he moves his body, especially his arms, when he lands a trick or when he spins. His switch ups look awesome and very, very clean. Julian Bah, the small man with a lot of hair on his head. When I talk about Julian Bah’s section do I really have to mention that he goes big? It’s funny, often the small guys are the ones who skate the biggest spots. One thing I seri-ously can’t understand is how people like Julian can jump really high and spin and still manage to fit through really small holes. Julian’s 540 through a narrow metal frame which is quite high up is just unbelievable.

True Fishy switch and natural down handrails are just a very small piece of Malik Kamara’s trick vocabulary. Malik looks as if he is a pretty big dude which makes it a bit easier to skate high rails. The only thing which distracted me was the way he sometimes wore a headband or other stuff under his baseball cap. Maybe this is just because the entire little gangster kids in my area walk around like this.

Ross Anthony does not care about a bit of bloodshed, not even if it is his own blood which is shed. He skates rough and if he was a pirate I’m sure he would take no prisoners. I have to admit that this dude really impressed me. Hopefully we will see more of this guy in the future. John Schmidt is up next and he is also skating very well. It’s great to see tricks like 360 Sweaty on square rails. Even tough his tricks are on a very high level his skating does look as if he could still improve his style a bit.

Back in the day it looked as if he was dancing on rails. But now it looks somehow better when Chris Cheshire skates a rail. This may be because he is really grinding now and not just jumping around. His ‘new’ style really is great and makes his skating look professional. Let’s go on to the next section. I seriously consider Sean Kelso to be one of the world most technical skaters. 270 BS Backslide to Outspin Sweaty and some other tricks which were already featured in Be-Mag’s Kelso in-terview should be evidence enough. Perhaps the Kelsos are so good because they push each other every day. It must be off the hook to have a brother which is always there to skate with you.

True Soul on a curved square rail, because of this trick I want to have baby from Chris Shaw. He is the man, all you have to do is watch this trick and you will love him. Chris Shaw is Philly’s future. This is why he was picked to be on the Poor Tour where he earned himself a lot of reputation. The next section is the Murda section. This guy spins like a merry-go-round. After this section it’s clear to me why this guy has become a pro. The reason for his success is not only his great talent but also the fun he has while he skates. During his whole section you have the feeling that he enjoys himself and he always has got a big smile on his face. Chris Majette also choose a great song for this section which actually motivates you to go out and skate.

If you buy this DVD you will also find five bonus sections as well as some remix sections. To round this off I want to say that this is a DVD which shows great skating. The only letdown for me was that I sometimes disliked the way it is filmed and also that it sometimes creates a rather dull atmosphere. But the last section, which is Murda’s, really hypes you. I per-sonally would give Choose your Genre 7.5 point out of 10.

Genre was founded about two years ago by Chris Majette. They have their very own hip-hop oriented style, they got one of the sickest teams in the world and they are all showing up in "choose your genre".

The intro is the same as the trailer. It starts out with a sick motion graphic that I heard murda was doing. So all the featured skaters are portraing, underlined with some slow music. The only thing that points out is that the editing is not too well done.

The video starts out with a really cool section of Colin Kelso whos skating is really stylish, as usual, he comes up with tricks where you really have to look twice to recorgnice what hell´s going on. I never heard a song like that on a skatevideo but it really fits his skating and it´s cool to watch this section. Next is Julian Bah, if you wanna see all the hammers that are not featured in Black Market from the last year, You should def. get an eye on this one. Solid stylish tricks with music from lil wayne.

If you know Malik Kamaras skating. You know his steez on unnatural tricks. So he shows up again and does some incredible shit!

I don´t know how many of you guys remember Ross Antohony, but I really didn´t hear much from him the past two years. But he´s back and if you watch this section will know what I´m talking about! Most of all I love his ao fishbrain at some crazy ledge that goes down and than up. It just goes with the flow. If you saw Opinions you´ll also think of this crazy guy called Jon Schmidt, all I can say, the story goes on...Like a Coffee is the friends section, with some fresh music Joey Graziano,Tim Phang,Willie Trebach, Jon Jon Bolino , jsut to name a few are showing up with tricks like Tim Phangs 360 Mute soul on steep ass rail. After that we got Cheshire, I love this guys skating, but I hated the song and the editing. But still very sick and most of all stylish and incredible skating. Freshman Sean Kelso is doin one hammer after anohter, and every trick is incredible. For example 270 bs backslide to fishbrain. All I can say is wtf?"??!?" Chris Shaw is known for his crazy spins and shit, but he could do 720 unitys on rails, i´d still prefeer cheshire doing a backslide, I just can´t feel his skating and the song just makes it even more worse. But still sick tricks and his truespin soul down a 20-30 stair curved sqaure drop rail really made my mouth stand open. Everybody who knows murdas skating and is a fan of him should buy this dvd, whenever you think he´s not able to kill it more, he surprises you with shit like true porn to topsoul to 360 topsoul.

A cool dvd that is worth it´s money, solid filming, but they should get the cam settings right, cause it all looks like some cheap night shot modus of a samsung camera for 300 dollars. The editing was also solid but in fact that the settings weren´t set right I wasn´t able to enjoy this one too much, also, it´s to long in my opinion. You´ll falso ind some sick shit in the bonus like an extra cheshire profile or an montage Alf did. All in all I´m glad to have it in my dvd collection.

I think everything about the video is great, best video out there by far, well black market is close. But I definately think Majette should give up on the 24fps steez, aka the choppey or jumpy motion. One of the great things about Majette’s videos was that he never really used many special effects when editing and it still looked great just because of the clean 3 chip look. Now suddenly there are like 6 or more effects on every clip.

MKK Dirty Ass, i’ll have to disagree with you about the filming, majette has really good fisheye shots.

but his music choices are generally poor, and generally he has some plain editing.. but it’s whatever hopefully it gets better.

I really liked this video and I am glad that it is on DVD. nothing against majette or any of the random people that seemed to be added to the team at the last minute, but I wish the video would have been squoozin (sp?) down to about a half an hour with just kelsos, cheshire, murda, shaw, julian, and a few montages of the rest of the guys. I just think majettes videos run a little long and could be cut down a bit. very good video though, I am glad I own it.

I havent seen it, but if it’s anything like past Majette releases, it’ll have sick skating and terrible filming and editing. Majette really needs to step up his game and learn a little bit about cameras.
