Denmark - Summer Wrap up - 06/09/01

This summer had a spectacular setup for Denmark as an inline nation. It started out with the Roskilde music festival, where I had hijacked Be-mag to supply the festival with a variety of the sickest skaters around. Be-mag more than lived up to what they promised and showed up with skaters like Brian Aragon, Mike Murda Johnson, the Kelso brothers, Stefan Horngacher, Adil, Tyrone Ballentine, Jojo Jacobi, Andreas Wagenblast, Dominik Wagner, and many more. I do not believe that we've had a set up of skaters this big ever in Scandinavia.

Unfortunately, the rain kicked in when we were supposed to skate, but cleared up right after and stayed warm for a month straight. I've just heard on the news today, that July this year was the warmest July we've had for 30 years. Hurray for that! This meant some great summer sessions around Scandinavia - some that will not be forgotten soon.

Just before the Roskilde festival, Ronni Skovmand released his first full-length film called Back and Forth featuring profiles of our own little star skaters Jacob Juul, Martin Gade, Julius Josefsen, and Kåre Lindberg. The video is truly great - so much has happened since in the level of skating since the last video was released in Denmark. The video should be up for download at iamcold.dk. Photographer Jens Riis made a photo-profile of Christian Berg. The profile features a series of really nice shot pictures and an interview with Christian. The profile can be downloaded at Swedish Midland magazine.

When the sun finally stopped shining in Denmark after almost 30 days straight of pure sunlight - it was August. August was the time for the Scandinavian Real Street Competition (SRSC) Finals in Copenhagen. Here, the setup was great again. We had a nice representation of foreign skaters, the spot was the best we've had in our 6 year long real street history in Denmark, but the weather was also the worst we've had for the 6 years. What would have been a great day at the beach with plenty of half-naked woman checking out the contest, was transformed into a day long event with tons of free beer for everybody. It wasn't the best, but we had a blast anyways. This year was also the year when I passed the throne of being the main organizer of this event on to Seth Nicolas. This concludes my 10 year anniversary of toxboe.net.

The winner of the SRSC was Jacob Juul for the 3rd year in a row. The winning trick was a 450 royale, fullcab top-porn, and so much shit on a sick sick ledge. German Daniel Prell came in second and Swedish Christopher Herdman came in third. Congratulations to you all!

The SRSC finals also meant a visit from the Ignition Tour. The tour stayed in Denmark for a few days, which brought them through some pretty unique days of pirate partying and good times. I can't say much about it as pirate parties aren't really legal - but what I can say is that 56 people got arrested at that party.

In not so recent news, skate photographer David Grant released his website: Lost Reality, where you can find around 20 good shots of Danish inline skating. You might also want to check out the 2006 spring edit from toxboe.net.

UPDATE: Kato, Franky Morales, and Chris Haffey decided to pay Tom Ahlqvist and Rene Hulgreen a visit in Copenhagen, and showed up for a few days to have some skate sessions in Copenhagen and Malmö in late August. I don't think Denmark has ever had the pleasure of such a great lineup of international superstars.
