The warm up’s were done and everyone had said hello to long lost friends. It was time for some serious rollerblading. The prize. A place at Winterclash 07 with the Empire UK team. A trip to one of the best events in Europe with one of the best teams in Europe, you better believe everyone was juiced!
Friday night and it’s one on one battles for places in the second round. They got two minutes on a obstacle picked out of a hat. The person who won would be the person who could adapt the quickest. Hammers were thrown left, right, center and above. Scott Hallows gets a special mention for souling up the grind box, gap to back royale on the flat drop rail to gap back to soul down the drive way (clip in a previous live update). The first round came and went and so the semi’s. Suddenly it was 11:30pm and everyone was exhausted. Dangerous called a halt to the proceedings and said the final would be the next day. Five of the best am’s in the country battling it out fresh for a huge prize. You knew it was going to be big. At the end of the night the final five were Mike Salt, Steve Swain, Scott Hallows Dan Collins and Sean Escott
Saturday afternoon saw the five finalists battle on the handrail at the back of the park and then onto the new monster drop rail. The handrail was taken apart by all five. Dan Collins set the bar with Full Cab True Mizou to Full Cab out, Mike Salt laced, and I mean laced, the most perfect 360 soul followed by Steve Swain busting out True Mizou to Alley-Oop Soul Full Cab out which got the park buzzing. Sean Escott showed that size doesn’t matter by hitting 270 back Royale to Front Farv 270 out. Scott Hallows was lacing sweatys like butter and then Dan Collins one up’ed himself with a Full Cab Back Savannah just as Dave called time on the first half of the Battle Royale.
Everyone raced across to the driveway, things were heating up and it was far too close to call. Sean Escott showed his intentions early with a Back Farv 450 off the drop follwed by Scott Hallows doing an Alley-Oop Unity. The crowd were really starting to get into it. There was barely enough room to skate, one side of the driveway was covered in the hysterical masses and the other side the hysterical media elbowing for room to get their angle. There is me slap bang in the middle trying to get clips for the Live Update article with Duncan Clarke’s flash on my left shoulder and Steve Bass’s XM1 on my head trying to clips of which ever one of his riders were going to win this year. We weren’t let down as Mike Salt landed Back Royale to True Alley-Oop Soul then followed it up with another 360 soul on the way back. Not to be out done Sean Escott got a Back Farv to Front Royale to Alley-Oop Soul to stake his claim.
It was getting close to the end and Mike Salt and Steve Swain both landed Soul to Soul transfers on the Rail to Box and Dan Collins Negative Makio’d the whole box. Sean Escott then gave everyone a fright as during a switch up he split the huge drop rail. Luckily for him he just clipped the edge of the rail and no permanent damage was done but it was a close thing for sure. Just as he stood up Steve Swain launched a huge disaster Topsoul attempt but slipped out of the landing. Everyone raised their game instantly after that. Mike Salt hit Fakie Front Royale to Alley-Oop Fish and Dan Collins lifted the roof off with a Back Royale 630 out. You could cut the tenson with a knife as Dangerous Dave gave everyone just a few more minutes. Steve Swain started going huge by gapping over the drop rail across to True Mizou on the box rail and Scott Hallows floated over the box 360 to Soul but just couldn’t stick the landing. Everyone was going nuts as the two of them tried to land their tricks again and again but every time they just slipped out or didn’t lock. Amongst the madnes Mike Salt landed Back Farv, Soul, Soyale Full Cab out. Steve Swain tried the diaster a couple ofmore times but Dave Bell called time and everyone could catch there breath. After a long long wait (Literally hours) Dave Bell announced Steven Swain as the winner. I don’t think anyone has worked so hard for a plane ticket in my life.
Till’ next year!
