Wow. this is horrible. During the time he lived here in the Detroit area for about a year, around 03'ish He was welcomed instantly and was part of the crew. He was a quality person and i am saddend. I only wish i would have stayed in touch over the years and not take his friendship for granted. You never know when you will never see or talk to someone again.
RIP JAMES, you will be missed by all.

damn man...my heart sank when I read this at work. I can't hardly function right now...such an awesome dude. Hadn't talked to him in a few years but like everyone already knows he was the shit. Rest in peace brother...
This is horrible.
I only met James once, when he first came out to California in like 2004. He just randomly showed up at a skate spot in Solona Beach and just immediatley started smiling and talking to us, complete strangers, on how juiced he was to see other rollerbladers. He said he liked my frontsides, and he gave me a 9mm shirt which is still one of my favorite things to wear. I will always remember him as a cool skater and most of all as a friendly, kind person.
My heart goes out to his family and friends in this dark time. R.I.P. James.

Seriously, he's just as much a part of the Detroit family as any of us. We miss you, James.
Today, I'll be wearing the Artysm jacket you gave me and I will try (and probably fail epically) some citric toe-rolls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egl2tDwasz4).
Also, FUCK THOSE WHO DRIVE UNDER THE INFLUENCE.
i'm so sorry to hear this, condolences to the people who were close to him.
It's really moving to see the impact that this guy had on the people around him, even the people with whom he only had casual contact. I have a lot to learn from his example. Rest in peace to what was clearly a good soul.

This world is too cruel. James deserved a long healthy life, a beatiful wife and kids. It is too fucked up he had to die like that. I am going to miss that guy so much. He brought a lot of joy to all of us.

Its hard to belive just last week I talked to him and he asked me how the video was coming and I asked him how he was doing, he said " Stacking clips. Im juiced on life." He really was a hell of a guy and I clicked with him on so many levels ( mainly our same sense of humor )
If anyone is making a memorial edit or something like that, I have a couple newer clips of him so hit me up.

I feel sad to see you go, but I believe you are in a better place and you will always be remembered, listening to all this very positive talk about you, seems like you were just genuinely a good guy not to mention a great rollerblader.
I hope that their family will be able to get over this hard part in their lives. I know how the rollerblading community is on be-mag and was wondering if anyone has set up an account to put money in, to give to their family?

Just got back from Akron, I've never cried so much in my life.
James' mother and father have both read all 16 pages of this thread and thank you for the support.
Stefan has a memorial session in the works right now, we'll get the info to you later.
James is still signed onto AIM and Myspace and everything, it just breaks my heart.
I loved him so much, I know he wouldn't want us to be sad - instead he'd say to go smoke a Marb. Red and do a Citric-toe roll. But it's hard. Like I said earlier, he was a brother to me. Always gave me the best advice (most of the time haha).
Anyway, we're having a vigil at the phila. skatepark tonight at 10:30. I know 99% of you don't live anywhere near here, but just thought I'd let you all know.
Calling hours are Wednesday, funeral is Thursday. I don't know where / what time yet, but I'll let you all know.
I just can't believe that James Short's funeral is being planned.
-ethan.
EDIT: I know James' dad wanted to get on here and write you all a message, but he didn't have an account, so he couldn't. He registered but I told him how fucking rediculous it is that it takes months to get activated. If he gets a chance I'll let him get on here and write you all something.

I've read through this thread several times since I've gotten word of this. Don't recognize too many names from '03 but had to come out of the woodwork and pay my respects.
I used to AIM chat with James nightly back in the days of "Rolling" chatrooms. I always got a kick out of his edits and the random shit he'd send me. Be-Mag is a family that I often miss being a part of. Stick together guys; keep up the support for one another.
This is tragic and nobody deserves such a thing. Condolences to family and close friends of James. You will continue to be in my prayers.

Thank you to everyone for all the support. It means more than you'll know. Things will never be the same for me now, thats for sure. I'm glad there's so many people out there that care.

I really can't stop crying. James was that good friend that everyone needed in their life.
He wasn't one to critic anything about someon's skating, he just skated with them
if you were skating a spot at a contest, he was the guy skating the curb and having more fun than the guy who won. I will miss that about him, and how he wrecked it on guitar, at the KY Battle this weekend Sept 5th, I will be taking donations to send his parents. We will also be giving away the James Short outside of the Box award to a very lucky individual. Anyone who was ever graced with James presence was a lucky individual, may I add. I hope everyone takes this into consideration, we all lost a really good friend to bullshit. Shit, I even have done myself in the past, and I damn sure am not proud of it. So, please be aware of others on the road, and be responsible, because no one needs pain in their hearts like we do right now.
I will miss you buddy...

Perhaps it's good advice to remember and value his living rather than morn his death. Also remember the impermanence of life and treat those around you with the compassion we feel for James. Perhaps then he lived and died leaving a larger impact than he would even know.
I have always thought that James and I had a similar view about skating and I will continue to be inspired by him although he is dead.
really really sad, james has been on the scene for so long.

I met James around when Vertigo had just opened and he truly was as friendly as everybody has made him out to be. Me and some friends would make the long drive when we had the chance and after a while I knew that I could always count on him being there to make the session a blast (I'm pretty sure he was living there for a bit). I'm really glad that I had the opportunity to skate and shoot the shit with the guy. The days of the Rolling chats, Rockstar Elite, and the "Not Showering" contests were good online times. This is all so sad, my thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.
I haven't been on skates in a long time, but I'm going to try to make it out for the memorial session.
Here's a picture he sent me a long while ago when we used to talk over AIM. I have more pictures from the silly vertigo sessions that I'll try to dig up as well.

Everyone keeps asking me how I'm so calm through all of this. I did my mourning in private. My girlfriend and I probably cried together for 3 hours straight today. But more than anything and I know this for a FACT, James would have wanted EVERYONE involved in this situation to gain something from it. I have heard from people this weekend I haven't talked to in years that I missed greatly, and have gained back friends I thought I had lost forever. Thats what James would have wanted out of this! For us to celebrate the greatness in our sport and the amazing bonds between the individuals in it.
James was a free spirit. He lived life on his OWN terms. He was NEVER like anyone else. Ever. James lived a fuller life by the time he was 20 than most will by the time they're 60 and have traveled the world. He never would have wanted to live a life where he couldn't communicate and laugh with his friends.
I dedicate my skating to James from this day until the day I can't stand. Lately he was inspiring and changing my skating/mindset so much, but now it's full force. It's going to be sad without him, but he'd be so excited to see the new changes I'm going to bring to myself and our friends.

Learn from both his life and death. Be kind, be yourself, greet everyone with a smile, and laugh because it feels good. Be smart, drinking and driving isn't harmless, the consequences can be tragic.
RIP James
I am speechless. I remember making a post a while back about riding around on motorcycles and hitting up different cities and skating, kinda like the eMerica Wild Ride tour that skateboarders do. James was like the first one that jumped on the idea that was down...and I was really looking forward to eventually riding down to Ohio to do this with him and a few others.
Being a motorcycle dude myself, I feel extremely bummed, scared, sad, right now.

I'm thinking the bigger reason we're all impacted by this loss is because James fuckin' got around. He was always traveling, bunking with rollers on all coasts and making friends everywhere he went. Yeah, we've got a tight-night community here, but it's simply because of James' rad personality that we're all hit hard by the loss.

The calling hours are either going to be Wednesday or Thursday, With the Funeral on Thursday or Friday.
I know that doesn't help too much, but since he was hit by a drunk driver, they have to do legal stuff and have a autopsy.
These last 4 days have made me realize how precious life really is. Yeah, it's really cliche to say that, but I never realized how true it was until now. I've never, ever, ever had a death affect me at all until now.
James was such an amazing person, inside and out.
Like I said earlier, his dad wanted to get on here and thank everyone for the support. I gave him my username/PW and hopefully he'll get on within the next couple of days.
If everyone could send me or Stefan all of their pictures they have of James, that would be amazing, Just send it in a PM or something.
Tomorrow we're all going to the local coffee shop and getting some Iced Chai and I'm going to the accident site.
I don't think it's sunk in yet, but I'm sure tomorrow morning i'll have another good cry session.
I love you James, JJHBforLIFE</3

Just a few days before we built a box, pvc.
Its just hard to think, I can't call James and ask him to go skate, or to grab a bite to eat, or anything.
I'm going to try to get some sleep, I'll post up stuff tomorrow if it's needed.
Keep replying to this thread, put in memories, good times, etc. His parents read this and I'm sure they'd like to hear some stories.
And yes, all of them.

Over the years, I've spent a lot of time with James. He was one of a kind. If you've ever met James... you are sure to remember him. He left an impression on every single person he met. Those of you that had the pleasure of meeting/skating with him know exactly what i'm talking about.
i hadn't seen James in a few years... due too him traveling, and everyone else's work/school/grown up shit, going on. luckily my good friend Adam and i recently took a trip down to New Philly to skate the park with James and some others. Of course i had no idea then, that would be the last time i'd see James and skate with him.
But now i just think... I'm so glad i went to the park that day.
This truly is a tragedy.
Rollerblading just lost another of the best.
Ohio just lost another rollerblader.
and I just lost another close friend.
RIP James. You will not be forgotten.

Please be safe guys. Drinking and driving is not cool. That shit has killed a few friends over here, and has killed y our friend on be-mag.
I actually liked his music. I'm glad that I was at least able to PM him to tell him that before I missed my chance. He will be missed.

http://www.timesreporter.com/local_news/x1566717101/Motorcyclist-dies
A report will be turned over to the Tuscarawas County prosecutor’s office for further review following the death Sunday of James D. Short, 24, of 116 Ray Ave. NW, New Philadelphia, stemming from a motorcycle/car accident Wednesday.
New Philadelphia police Officer David Cimperman said the collision of Short’s motorcycle and a car driven by Doris A. Caranda, 48, of 412 Kelly St. NW, New Philadelphia, appears to have occurred in Short’s lane of travel.
The accident was reported Wednesday at about 9 p.m., and Short was listed Thursday in serious condition in the medical intensive care unit of Akron General Medical Center, where he was flown by helicopter Wednesday night.
Cimperman said Sunday that evidence shows that Short was westbound on Park Ave. NW and was turning north onto Union Ave. NW. Caranda was driving a car south on Union Ave. and was turning left (east) onto Park Ave.
Cimperman said Short’s motorcycle was “technically in the intersection” and “definitely on the right of way for the northbound lane” when the collision occurred.
Short, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from the motorcycle and was thrown about 20 to 30 feet from the point of impact.
Caranda, who was not injured, was cited for driving under the influence and possession of marijuana. Cimperman noted Sunday, however, that he has not cited yet for the underlying charge and said that won’t be done until he has a chance to discuss the report with the prosecutor.
Meanwhile, about 200 of Short’s friends were assembling a memorial tribute to his life at the New Philadelphia Skate Park off Mill Ave. SW late Sunday night.
Trina Garcia of Tuscarawas said Short was a pro rollerblader and noted that his friends were skating in his memory. She also said the tribute would include a helium balloon launch.
A candlelight vigil also was to be included in the tribute, according to Anjanette Beahm of New Philadelphia.
“We’re all devastated,” said Spencer Gray, also of New Philadelphia, adding that Short was one of his best friends. Gray, who also had skated with Short for about a year, described Sunday night’s scene at the Skate Park as “electrifying.”
In addition to being a pro rollerblader, Short had been employed as a pizza maker at Jesana’s Pizza at New Philadelphia for about a year and a half.
It looks like the girl may just get a ticket and a letter saying "please don't kill people again".
R.I.P James. My condolences to friends and family.
No helmet? Seriously. That could have saved his life.

Funeral is at 11am at Geib funeral home, followed by a procession past the skatepark to Roxford Cemetary.
His father told me:
" I don't want people to think they have to come and wear a Tux and get all dressed up. I want people to dress as they would if they were coming to see him or skate with him. "

Caranda, who was not injured, was cited for driving under the influence and possession of marijuana.
Does this mean she was under the influence of marijuana, and possessed it, or that she was under the influence of alcohol, and also possessed marijuana?
Basically, was she drunk, or high, or both?

James was the only person who i never met in person that I felt like I could call my friend. He reached out to me on many occasions, offering lodging, advice, or just a conversation. I am still in shock and greatly saddened.

It's unfortunate that he wasnt wearing a helmet or he probably would have lived. It's one thing to not wear one when skating when you are mostly in control but riding a motorcycle without one is another story. Wear your helmets!

Hello be-mag, this is James's Mom and Dad. We want to first of all thank youngblood/Ethan for letting us use his account to post our thanks. We want to thank all of you for some really great stories about James, for sharing your condolences with us, and for being so great over the years to him; he loved be-mag and was always online talking to so many of you. He loved the industry, encouraged the future generations of rollerbladers, and when he made friends ,it was for life.
We have so many to thank, I'm afraid to start cause I know i'll miss some, so I'll just list a couple of the earliest ones; first of all Jon Elliot, who inspired and encouraged James, & started him on his love of skating. Brian Shima, & all the California pros he met over the years who treated him so good, all the others across the country and over seas as well. You guys have earned your place in heaven.
He's got so many friends in the industry who helped us through this terrible time; Ben Schwab, Ethan, Stefan Brandow, the list could go on and on....all the beautiful friends he had who lived with us at Akron general Hospital, and prayed for a better outcome than we got. He lived more in 24 1/2 years than most do in 50, And thank God for that.
We couldn't ask for a better son, and I know he was also a good friend to many, it's helped us get through this so far.
We'd like to send him out in the manner he deserved and the style he loved. You can read his obit at www.geibfuneral.com for arrangements this Thursday and Friday, and we welcome any and all of you who can attend, as James loved a good party. Let's celebrate his life, and remember one of his favorite sayings: it's all good.....see you on the other side James. With love, Rod And Debra Short, New Philadelphia, Ohio[/url]

As his parents said above me, his obituary is posted. But I figured I would post it here as well:
James David Short, whose life was described by his friends as "a unique, and beautiful song", passed away at the age of 24, while surrounded by his family on Sunday, August 30, 2009 in Akron General Medical Center following injuries sustained from a motorcycle accident on Wednesday, August 26.
Born March 18, 1985, in Aultman Hospital at Canton, James was the beloved son of Rodney L. and Debra "Reb" Lynn (Robinson) Short of New Philadelphia.
James was a young man of great charisma and fun-loving persona whom everyone enjoyed knowing. He was especially energized by working with children, inspiring them to succeed, having earned notoriety in professional rollerblade competitions around the country.
James graduated from New Philadelphia High School and has spent much of the last decade earning a PhD from the School of Life. Having also lived in California, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, James was looking forward to beginning his education at Kent State University's TusCampus having recently received a pell grant and eagerly awaiting his letter of acceptance.
During his high school years, he began his musical and rollerblading careers. He was a talented singer, songwriter, bass player, and guitar player sharing his musical abilities in a number of bands including One Thing, Autumn Remains, The Color 7, Brickyard Slaves, and The Paul Allens. He was also an accomplished solo acoustic artist.
James was a free spirit who enjoyed all that life had to offer. He was proud of the fact he had slept in the Rocky Mountains, on the beaches of California, and in the dessert. He traveled Route 66 to California one time, just because he thought it would be exciting to do. His professional rollerblading career gave him the opportunity to see most of the United States. He was internationally known for his standing record of the longest toe roll in the world, and other tricks which incorporated the toe roll.
He was supported by a number of sponsors during his rollerblading career. Currently, Remz (Skates), INRI Clothing, Jolly Jolly Heartbreakers, and Sic Apparel were his tour sponsors. He has also been backed by 9MM, Razors, Ground Control and Mix Theorem.
When not rollerblading or creating music, James was the life of the party working at Jesana's Pizza. There, he was an assistant manager and loved creating what he called "artistic, delicious master pieces". He has also worked for a variety of other companies including Radio Shack, Larry Karol CD's and More, Walmart, Q-dobas and Olga's Kitchen in Detroit, MI.
In addition to his parents, who will deeply miss James, he is survived by his maternal grandfather, Herb Robinson Jr. and his companion, Ingrid Parker of New Philadelphia; his aunts; Sandy Hartshorn and her family of Clyde, O. and Barbara (husband, Dan) Leishman of New Philadelphia, his uncle; Dave (wife, Patti) Robinson of Naperville, IL; numerous cousins; and a world of friends.
James was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Kathryn Robinson and his paternal grandparents, Chalmer and Mary Short.
Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia, 116 Second St. NE on Thursday, September 3, 2009 from 4 to 8 p.m.
A service celebrating James' life will be held in the funeral home's chapel on Friday beginning at 11 a.m. with Pastor Matt Roe officiating.
Special arrangements have been made to lead the funeral procession past James' second home, the New Philadelphia Skate Park, en route to Roxford Church Cemetery where inurnment will be conducted. Those wishing to ride a motorcycle in the procession are encouraged to do so and will be directed by Geib staff upon arrival at the funeral home.
In an interview given to BE-MAG / Rollerblading Magazine this past July, James responded to a reporter who asked Short about whether or not he would ever settle into one place. He Replied " I am not a stationary person. I live for right now. Its hard for a lot of people to fathom. I move a lot because I'm in need of new experiences. It truly is what makes the creative mind work." – James' philosophy on life was, "It's all good." He also believed, "I'm child and man, then child again. The boy never gets older."
Please direct memorial contributions in James' memory to any Dover-Phila Federal Credit Union where an account has been established. His parents are going to distribute the money donated to allow other children to achieve their dreams.
Because James gave life to others through Organ Donation, and because he leaves behind so many loving family, friends and fans, he'll be forever on the move in the Heavens above, riffing with the best, rolling with the rest, and waiting to welcome us Home.

You know, I thought it looked like St. Ours, but James Shortface sent me the picture a long time ago so I assumed it was him.
I wish I could make it to his memorial session.

Here's some stuff I caught on my phone from the procession:

^There must've been between 60 and 80 cars all lined up for James.
Releasing the balloons:

^Just before James' balloons were released.
All in all, everything about today was beautiful. A tremendous amount of love was expressed by many for James, and rightly so. It all still seems so surreal though.

Hi everyone; This is James' mom.
We thank you all for the outpouring of love and support; it was a huge turn out for his calling hours and funeral; the biggest they've had there. We loved seeing you all, and hearing "James" stories, it's really been the bright spot in this tragedy. Thanks again to Ethan/youngblood for allowing me to post on his account! Looks like a large benefit planned for the 13th and another big session planned for the 19th at the new Phila Skate Park. See you there! Debra Short

So what's the deal with the session on the 19th? Who's organizing it? What time of the day will it be? Will the lights be on? I'm trying to organize as many Detroiters to come to it as possible.

Same here from Indianapolis.
An address and time would be awesome, I figure it's about 5 hours if I don't get lost.

I just found out about this today, and boy has it been a rough one. James was one of those rare individuals that grace one's life and change things for the better.
He invited me to a skate session online when I was 16. I barely knew him, but it seemed like a great idea, especially for a youngster. After a great session, I surmised that James Short was one of the most intriguing, kindred, and genuinely pleasant people I'd ever met.
From then on, as we began to hang out more and more, I began emulating him, as I'm sure many others have. Sometimes I would feel intimidated by his incredible grace and swiftness on his skates. He'd say, "Screw that. You shred just as hard. Now skate that ledge!" It was the kind of push a timid person like myself needed. I grew as a rollerblader as well as an inquisitive young mind. His personality and actions reminded me greatly of someone who would certainly entertained the ideologies shared by Buddhists or Taoists--a state of mind in which one can exists solely with itself, while also maintaining a tender connection to the environment around them. James was the type of person to accept everything for its own values and merits.
Time passed, and we got a little older. There were times when he'd go somewhere, I'd go somewhere, and we'd lose contact. Then, almost miraculously, we'd be drawn back together. James was the kind of person who would call, text, or message you to hang out and you just could not say "No." It wasn't the kind of suspicious behavior that one who guilt-trips someone elicits. No, James was just someone you WANTED to be around. His charming smile, gentle laugh, and warm temperament just intoxicated you.
As my general style and aesthetic taste began to assume a quality similar to his, I realized that this guy had become one of those key figures that most have in their life; one that helps you develop and find yourself by acting as a bounce-board of sorts. I could always reflect or lament and know that he'd be willing to listen and contemplate with me.
There is so much I could say right now. So much I WANT to say. I have so many memories.
Debra, Rod, I had only met the two of you a couple of times in all of the years. My name's Jon Coy, aka Lawsuit Boy as James frequently referred to me as (that's a long, hard story that I shared with James very openly). I don't know if you remember me. I wish to offer my condolences for your loss. But, as you've already pointed out, James wouldn't want me to feel as awful as I do right now. Instead, he would tell me to perk up, listen to some good tunes, and enjoy taking in each breath. I hope that the following months and years go as smoothly and painlessly as possible. I loved your son so much, not only as an amazing friend, but as a complete and utter inspiration. I thank you both for giving the world the opportunity to enjoy the company of such a wonderful person.
I will certainly be stopping by the skate session in New Philly on the 19th.
RIP James.
