stefan brandow just told me he was hit by a car riding his bike and was life flighted to a hospital in akron, ohio.


Yeah, it's comfirmed.

From what I was told, between the stroke and the loss of blood to one of the parts of his brain, they told us that he wont be able to talk/understand us or maybe more as I said earlier on the last page.

This is horrible.

I'll still try to update this as much as possible, I came home to get some sleep, but when I'm there I have my iPhone so I usually tell you guys whats happening, as it's happening.

Test results came back today and we arent so sure if he is gonna pull out of this...

Hello be-mag, this is James's Mom and Dad. We want to first of all thank youngblood/Ethan for letting us use his account to post our thanks. We want to thank all of you for some really great stories about James, for sharing your condolences with us, and for being so great over the years to him; he loved be-mag and was always online talking to so many of you. He loved the industry, encouraged the future generations of rollerbladers, and when he made friends ,it was for life.
We have so many to thank, I'm afraid to start cause I know i'll miss some, so I'll just list a couple of the earliest ones; first of all Jon Elliot, who inspired and encouraged James, & started him on his love of skating. Brian Shima, & all the California pros he met over the years who treated him so good, all the others across the country and over seas as well. You guys have earned your place in heaven.
He's got so many friends in the industry who helped us through this terrible time; Ben Schwab, Ethan, Stefan Brandow, the list could go on and on....all the beautiful friends he had who lived with us at Akron general Hospital, and prayed for a better outcome than we got. He lived more in 24 1/2 years than most do in 50, And thank God for that.
We couldn't ask for a better son, and I know he was also a good friend to many, it's helped us get through this so far.
We'd like to send him out in the manner he deserved and the style he loved. He has a blood clot in his head. They're taking him in right now to do surgery to remove it. No info about the contusion on his lung. The head injury needs to be taken care of first.

They said the first prognosis is that he's going to have to stay in the hospital for WEEKS. Not just a couple weeks, weeks on end for rehabilitation. The doctors said they saw his arms moving, but the rest of his body hasn't moved. They also said he tried to wake himself up but couldn't, so that means he's fighting.

It could be a lot worst, but this still is absolutely terrible. It's looking ok for him in the long run, but everything is still kind of up in the air :?

Ok. I didn't feel like going through all 6 pages on here considering I'm on my phone at the hospital. But here's the whole story.

Wednesday night at about 9:00 a 48 year old woman hit him as he was turning through the intersection. She was drunk and high off marijuana. I was told her blood alchol level was 2.something, but I'm not sure on that.

He was taken in an ambulance to a nearby place so the helicopter could get in. They life flighted him to Akron. He hasn't been concious since it happened.

AS OF RIGHT NOW: he has contusions in each of his lungs, a broken right Ankle, and the worst of all - his brain is STILL swelling and bleeding. If it continues to do so it will press against his spine, then we could have some complications.

They operated on his head the night of the accident to relieve some of the pressure, so the surgery was already performed. We basically have to wait now.
We were told that up until Sunday, anything could happen. After Sunday, there is a much greater chance that he will be much more stable.

I don't know what they have him on, or if it's a medically induced coma, but he will be unconcious for a minium of 2 weeks.

He has lots of people up here, myself and 5 others.

Please, everyone, weather you believe in prayer or not - wish him the best of luck to keep fighting, and for a speedy recovery.

I just got off the phone with Ben Schwab. He drove 5 hours last night to go and see James.

He said James had to have part of his skull removed because of the swelling and it will keep getting worse until Sunday. His parents are there and are being super positive their son will make it with a full recovery.

I wish I could be there pulling for him too. Just trying to keep him in my thoughts every second and hopefully that will help in some way.

My friend that I skateboarded with has a lil brother, and he was a rollerblader...super thugged out... now I was friends with all the rollers in my town, but never fit in cause i was always that rock n roll kid wearing tight pants and stuff. so i stayed over at my buddies house, and his brother put the video in, and I heard Pink Floyd and saw Jon just doing the most ridiculous shit ever.I decided then and there that rolling was for me

Has being a professional changed your views on rolling? I'm sure you've had the chance to meet Jon Elliot since then, is he still an idol, or a peer?
It has for the most part changed my views... i still skate for me.. but theres the whole trying to please the sponsors as well... i find that if you truly skate how you feel natural... no one hassles you...elliott is more of a best friend and mentor now.. hes helped me get where i am today and i owe him everything... he took me under his wing... and yes hes still my idol, but also a peer as well... i love jon for the simple fact that we get along very well and we compliment each others skating and personality...I can remember sitting with Jon on a random balcony in San Diego at like 1 A.M. having a beer and a ciggarette thinking.. wow.. little old me .. who would have thought a smalltown kid could ever come this far?. so to sum up.. yes Jon is an idol, but also a father figure, no more like an older brother who helped me along my way.

Lets talk about how you skate; Matt Morrison once told me that you're the only person that he's ever met that impressed him with a toe roll. Why do you skate how you do?
It's hard to explain...I just started skating like this.. one day after like 3 months of skating i realized that theres so much more to it than switchups, gaps and handrails.I vowed to change the way people look at skating.. my skating in particular.. and seeing as how im yet to have a clip or photo of a gnar bar or a switchup really...I think my point is coming across

There's been some hate on messageboards. How do you feel about all the hate towards different styles of skating, yours specifically?
I look past it... I just wish kids could learn to appreciate skating... I mean, people drive spot to spot and have completely nixed the rollerblading aspect... They get outta the car put skates on, skate a rail, ledge etc. then take them off and drive away... I want to see how you skated up to the trick, the trick itself, the landing and how you roll away and everything in between... People just overlook the simple things, thinking the harder things are more acceptable... I guess I'm just doing the unnacceptable.. some days I'll go skate around the city bombing hills skating fakie really fast and just cruising... hitting shit as I go rather than attempting and trying over and over on one spot... Kids need to get back to the simple... Quality over quantity and style over stunt. Thats my belief.

I don't know, i'll probably just be chilling with a wife somewhere in the sticks of ohio, focusing on music and playing shows, maybe start some type of company.

I'm not one to really ponder the future.. some may think that.. i just say live for right now.. you will find what is best for you as time comes.

Why do you think our industry is so bad right now?
it is bad because a few years ago, we were quite big.. then our way of thinking..which is similar amongst all rollerbladers.. decided that we should pull out and become skater owned, no corperate bullshit etc.. so.... we did that and for a few years it went smooth.. but now our debts, our drama... its all crashing down on us right now...his next wave of rollers will determine where the sport and industry goes. thats what im scared of...bickering about who does the most switchups and who is wearing what clothes isnt gonna help rolling grow.

Word. Your advice on helping it grow?
My advice is to accept rollerblading for what it is. dont take yourself too seriously... find a place you fit in and go with it or start something new. i guess if you want to help rollerblading. ask yourself... what can i bring to the table? what can i do to change rollerblading as we know it?

stefan called me earlier tonight to let me know more details and it's definately not looking good for james. i can't tell you how much this is affecting me, that dude is the best. it's really awesome to see how many people are behind him on this. i know he would LOVE to see this thread one day.

i really wish i could go see him but it's just not going to happen since he is so far from tennessee. if you live in the ohio area i would suggest you go pay him a visit. there are close to 30 people at the hospital to see him from what stefan was telling me.

Ok. 6:16 and I just got a update.

I'm at the hospital right now, woke up to some people talking.
Stefan, ben Schwab, and james' dad were outside the waiting room all talking. Then I heard a nurse talking and she said this:

his blood pressure is dropping to a more normal rate, however his heart rate is still very high.
She said some other bs that I really didn't gives fuck about, then said " it doesn't look good" and shook her head.

Here's the worst part, I was actually debating weather or not to post this, bit here's what the doctors told us yesterday at about 6.

Basically if he pulls through and wakes up, he wont be able to talk, or even understand us. He probably won't even know us and basic motor functions are still up in the air. Needless to say, yesterday was one of the most sad days of my entire life after hearing that.

For the short 2 years I've known James he's been a brother to me. We have the same ups and downs brothers have, and still love each other all the same and would do anything to help each other out. All we can do now is hope and pray for a miracle to help him out.

Please, everyone, keep him in your thoughts/prayers. Let him know how much support he has and how many people want him better.

Doctor update: j has lost gag reflex and other few positive signs, tests just ordered: eeg brain blood flow etc. results take minimum 4 to 6 hours, these tests determine brain death; results will determine next step.


I don't know any of that doctors jibberish but I am guessing we will know if he is going to make it out without permanant brain damage today.

His gag reflex came back, but the best part about it is the doctors said that 99.9% of the time when that happens you DON'T get it back. That means he's fighting!
Anything can happen guys. People who have been told they'll never walk again have ran marathons, and James is 1,000 times stronger than any of those people. Have hope! Keep him in your thoughts! Positive brings positive.




For those that care:
Me, Shane Conn, and Matt Plasencia (everyone that went to the hospital last night) were skating today to get things off our mind. We were skating a new rail and I was trying a trick I usually get 2-3 try and it was taking me a good half an hour. I remember what James always tells me when I get pissed while we're skating: "Just let it happen man. Don't think just do" and it always works. The minute I thought of that the Elliott Smith song from his last section (http://vimeo.com/4850748) came on my iPod. I said "James you motherfucker!" and landed it right then.
Right after that I talked to Ethan and he said that his gag reflex came back and the swelling has at least stopped, I don't know if it's decreased or not.

Yes, his gag reflex is back. Great news. We're not out of the woods yet, but it was welcome good news. It has definitely lightened up the mood here. I'm here now with about 15 others and more are on the way.

The funny part is that the ICU waiting room has strict rules that limit 2 visitors to each patient, and only limits visiting to immediate family. We've blown both of those rules out of the water.

Now I'm listening to the soothing sounds of ben Schwab playing the guitar and singing.

Like I said it has definitely lightened up the mood.

I remember going to one of the earlier Motor City Shakedowns when I was like 15 or so. I was a huge grommet. I was just bullshitting around on some tiny ledge and James came up and started skating it with me. He was doing his citric acid toe rolls and stuff and I had never seen them in videos or anything like that before. It was awesome and he was such a nice guy. He was probably like 18 or 19 and just seemed like the coolest fucking dude.

I used to talk to him on AIM a lot, but I was smoking so much god damn pot all of the time and so many of those conversations are such a haze now. I really wish I could remember a bit more. He did play a song or two on his guitar for me one time and that was awesome.

James will be remembered very well.

I've know James since he was just a kid. Rolling around with us and always just being a positive person. When I got the news, a piece if me died. He will be forever missed by me and many. I've only talked to him through aim every once in a while over the past few years, but he always found a way to brighten my day. I will miss him.... I hope heaven had a skatepark.

James was a great person, but everyone already knows that. I can't stop crying.

This is horrible.

He was truly one of the few people that I could count on to cheer me up no matter what, or listen to me ramble on at 3 am about how much I hated boys. I've strayed away from the rolling scene but James was one of the few people I've kept in contact with over the years, and I think it's only appropriate that I come out of the woodwork and pay tribute to him on Be-Mag since that is where we first started talking.

So....here's to you my friend, "OMG it's James Short!", I love you and I'm going to miss you. RIP.

It seems like just yesterday James was living on the futon at Octona, looking at porn on the shop computer, being awesome and writing personalized notes that accompanied our mail-orders.
