Just got back from a Christmas party, Instead of green and red jello shots, like they usually do, they had 5 lbs of green and red gummi bears, which they had soaked in vodka of 5 days, Pretty good idea. Especially when mixed with lots and lots of beer.
I think I'm just happy I got on the first page of this thread.

you have to find somewhere in town where you can buy expensive beers.
for example, here in charlotte:
-harris teeter (somewhat of an upscale grocery store) has a few different kinds of good beers
-total wine - has an entire aisle of nice choices
-brawley's beverage - store specializing in expensive beer
-flying saucer - bar that i live next to that has 300+ beers
you just gotta try random shit, learn about different beer styles, and figure out what you're into. don't judge a beer style from one beer either. i thought i hated IPAs because the first one i had was a dogfishhead 60 minute ipa. that shit sucks, but there are some really fucking good ones.
last night i had 2 ruination IPAs, and had a sip of some kind of oatmeal stout that had an EXTREMELY strong coffee flavor, it was pretty tasty and i'd like to try again.

World Wide Stout gets really high ratings but my opinion is that it is way too boozy.... and I love the 120 Minute which has even more alcohol.
Celebration Ale is not your normal holiday beer, it is an IPA that is brewed differently every year. At 7.99 a 6pack I can't think of a better beer, I'll include my full review because I pretty much raved about it.

"A somewhat aggressive pour yields a frothy two finger off white head atop a beautiful crystal clear coppery-orange body. There is so much lacing you could count my sips, like growth rings on a tree.
And a mighty tree it is, the nose exudes resinous pine. In the background there is some citrus, mostly grapefruit but I'm getting sweet and juicy tangerine as well.
There is a hint of sweet caramel on the tip of the tongue and then the hops takeover. Grapefruit dominates with pine playing second fiddle, basically the reverse of the nose. Finishes moderately bitter with some spiciness and floral accents.
Medium in body and carbonation with a nice creamy mouthfeel and long oily finish.
This one is very hoppy, but not abrasively so. There is just enough caramel maltiness to keep the bitterness in check. For a hoppy IPA coming in at almost 7% abv this is extremely sessionable, I could drink it all night. For me this years Celebration Ale belongs to the highest tier of IPAs, its release makes Chicago winter a bit more tolerable."

annnnnyyyyyyway.......total hair of the doggin' it. friday night was my last class ever so i went out with other seniors and got absolutely caca faced. woke up with a screaming hangover at this chick ive been banging's house, have her drive me home....go shopping to get mad pimped out for my homie's work party....they rent out the paradise rock club in boston and the have free drinks and you get to be all g'd up and dance it was incredible- i got absolutely tanked, made out with some girl on stage in front of the whole place(embarrasing but awesome cuz the company is so crazy and they dont give a shit), then an old girlfriend hits me up right after its over and she gets us a room at the sheraton.
i was in touch with my inner player this weekend- one of the most epic weekends of my life. i'm kicking back cold ones and reflecting on how seriously cool i managed to be this weekend

Duchy - Organic English Ale - 5% abv
Basically a run of the mill English Bitter. It pours dull and hazy with a small and short lived head. Has a nice nose, sort of like a caramel apple with some hay and earthy hops in the background. The flavor is similar but muted, as seems to usually be the case with organic beers. It's easy to drink but subpar for the style. Profits are donated to "the prince of wales' charitable foundation". whoopdeedoooo

Southern Tier - Old Man Winter Ale - 8%abv

Southern Tier is really hit or miss, usually their 22oz singles are hits and the 6packs are misses. The Old Man is the first 6pack of theirs I've tried that I would buy again (I already have bought 2 6ers). It is an old ale, which is generally a style meant to be aged, and I could see this beer improving with time. However, there are a ton of hops in it so it is also delicious fresh. There is a moderately sweet malty background full of toffee and roasted nuts. Plenty of raw herbal hoppiness with subtle floral and citrus qualities. This drinks really easy for such a big flavorful beer.

Great Lakes Christmas Ale is a really wonderful, rich, malty, warming brew spiced with ginger and honey. It is perfect for sipping during the holidays, and the cold winter months. Christmas Ale pours to a beautiful, opaque caramel color with a nice white head and a soft carbonation. The nose on this beer is wonderful. Really big sweet caramel malt aromas marry with some ginger spice character, and peppery hints of alcohol. The palate is rich, and delicious. More big sweet malt flavor, a touch of toffee, a hint of chocolate, and traces of honey flavor. Honey gives this beer a nice warming alcohol boost, but in general honey really doesn’t impart all that much flavor to a beer. The body is hefty, and slightly syrupy. This beer finishes with more sweet malt up front, then ends with some nice ginger spice and a warming, high octane burn. This is a fantastic winter warmer. I would match this beer with desert. It would work well with mince meat pie, or ginger bread men. I look forward to this beer every Christmas. This beer is hard to find, it can only be found in Great Lakes market, which is a few Midwestern states. So if your lucky enough to get Great Lakes beers, keep a eye out for this one.

I approve of that review, it is probably my favorite spiced christmas ale. I tried to poach a pear in it and it ended up being too bitter though, guess I'll stick with sweet Belgian ales for that sort of cooking.

Whole wheat bread maltiness with a strong buttery character and plenty of grassy/leafy hoppiness. Just mildly bitter, with a fairly light body, smooth mouthfeel, and oily hoppy finish. Perhaps my favorite English Pale Ale.

Celebration Ale is not your normal holiday beer, it is an IPA that is brewed differently every year. At 7.99 a 6pack I can't think of a better beer, I'll include my full review because I pretty much raved about it.

"A somewhat aggressive pour yields a frothy two finger off white head atop a beautiful crystal clear coppery-orange body. There is so much lacing you could count my sips, like growth rings on a tree.
And a mighty tree it is, the nose exudes resinous pine. In the background there is some citrus, mostly grapefruit but I'm getting sweet and juicy tangerine as well.
There is a hint of sweet caramel on the tip of the tongue and then the hops takeover. Grapefruit dominates with pine playing second fiddle, basically the reverse of the nose. Finishes moderately bitter with some spiciness and floral accents.
Medium in body and carbonation with a nice creamy mouthfeel and long oily finish.
This one is very hoppy, but not abrasively so. There is just enough caramel maltiness to keep the bitterness in check. For a hoppy IPA coming in at almost 7% abv this is extremely sessionable, I could drink it all night. For me this years Celebration Ale belongs to the highest tier of IPAs, its release makes Chicago winter a bit more tolerable."

"A somewhat aggressive pour yields a frothy two finger off white head atop a beautiful crystal clear coppery-orange body. There is so much lacing you could count my sips, like growth rings on a tree.
And a mighty tree it is, the nose exudes resinous pine. In the background there is some citrus, mostly grapefruit but I'm getting sweet and juicy tangerine as well.
There is a hint of sweet caramel on the tip of the tongue and then the hops takeover. Grapefruit dominates with pine playing second fiddle, basically the reverse of the nose. Finishes moderately bitter with some spiciness and floral accents.
Medium in body and carbonation with a nice creamy mouthfeel and long oily finish.
This one is very hoppy, but not abrasively so. There is just enough caramel maltiness to keep the bitterness in check. For a hoppy IPA coming in at almost 7% abv this is extremely sessionable, I could drink it all night. For me this years Celebration Ale belongs to the highest tier of IPAs, its release makes Chicago winter a bit more tolerable."

I know that the 90 Minute has more malt to balance things out and contribute to the 9% alcohol, but I was shocked by how un-hoppy it seemed to be.
I've probably had about ten 4-packs of it the last few years and this was the first time I was disappointed, so I am guessing it was just a bad batch or something.

surprisingly sweet for a double ipa, but the hops kick in in the aftertaste. its worth trying once, i dont think i'd like to session these.

I'm having Rogue's Yellow Snow IPA. When you open it up, you're overpowered by the marijuana-esque smell of hops... taste is deliciously bitter...the taste doesn't hold up as the beer warms, though. overall an okay beer with a cool ass name.
