It smells like gas when I start the engine. What could be causing that?

firing a shotgun into the gas tank will usually help as well.

How strong is it?

That could be caused by a lot of things. Does the car seem to be using more gas than normal?

When you park and then leave again, look and see if there is any liquid on the ground. That could be oil (black), water from the ac (water) but if you notice one and it smells like gas you have a better reason to have it looked at.

It could just be running "rich" and that could be from a number of things. Spark plugs, catalytic converters clogged ect.

Is it only noticeable when it starts? Does it smell like gas during the drive?

Have your dad or a male take it in if you do because the guys at the store will screw you.

when you start the car, your fuel injectors squirt extra fuel into the combustion chamber to help the car start. usually not all of the fuel gets burnt so it ends up traveling out of the combustion chamber and through the exhaust. a thing in your exhaust called the muffler bearing collects the unburnt fuel which is then sucked back into the fuel tank by vacuum. your bearing probably just needs to be replaced.

I actually have other mechanical problems with my car, I just can't afford to have them fixed until after it's paid off.(Which is a week after Christmas) I just want to make sure that this isn't something that can be harmful to me.

On one hand it's gas. A "technician" and others might tell you based strickly on that they might say take it in.

Since it's only on startup, I wouldn't worry about it all.

What year, make, model and what else is wrong with the car? Is your check engine light on?

As said it is most likely just the engine having to use a shit load more fuel to stay running the first minute or so. The colder it gets the more fuel it uses per rotation.

Maybe but she shouldn't be smelling it if it's working as it was designed.

Reguardless, I would drive it.

Get in my favorite mode of transporation (but not my most used) and you might get a head buzz from the fumes. At every idle point.

03 Dodge Neon. I actually had it looked at September of last year and they printed up a list of what needs to be done.
Airbag clockspring
Battery and battery service
Spark plugs
Air filter
Transmission fluid flush
