View Full Version : hard wheels vs soft wheels
do softer wheels absorb better impact? i always assumed they did but i saw this, which is probably completely unrelated but i feel like there could be a connection

dude runs barefoot and says that the more cushion you put in your jogging shoes, the more stress it puts on your joints
kind of a far fetched connection
hmm maybe there is a connection between putting increased cushioning into your shoes and acquiring poor running form
so an indirect relationship between increased cushioning and tension on your joints, not an direct relationship
edit: yah i just watched the video, he makes the argument that i laid out. that's exactly why he said "take short light steps"
running barefoot encourages proper running form which decreases tension on your joints

Yeah definitely. My favourite running shoes are the old-school Adidas, they feel hard at first compared to Shox etc. but your feet don't wallow so there's less post-run pain, less chance of twisting an ankle, I love 'em.

I don't think the same would apply to skates though, because the wheels can't deform very far off the axle line. And the boot holds your foot in the right anatomic position more than shoes do. Even with the rubber heel in Salomons, there's no more post-session joint pain than with hard-heel boots.
In my experience, from wheels that are soft as shit, like 88 softness they tend to rebound way more on gaps then say wheels that are 90.
So you have to stick your landings a little differently. You almost gotta land twice in the same bounce if it's a large gap.
for me the hardness or softness of a wheel has been more about grip than rebound. i do not do a lot of gaps. just my two cents.
i switched from the 85 A k2 face wheels to 95 A FR wheels (another ebay bulk wheel buy) and it wasn't bad at first. however actually rollerblading from one spot to another was near impossible if the road wasn't perfect, but impacts felt more solid and made a cooler sound. but when i went to the diy 'skatepark' in my area, i ate the worst shit doing true porn revert to forward. i did the revert kind of late and just like tobogganed into a crazy ass switch spinning fish cess slide when i hit the ground. fuck those wheels
