SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea defiantly carried out a provocative rocket launch Sunday that the U.S., Japan and other nations suspect was a cover for a test of its long-range missile technology.
Liftoff took place at 11:30 a.m. (0230GMT) Sunday from the coastal Musudan-ri launch pad in northeastern North Korea, the South Korean government said. In Washington, the State Department also confirmed the launch.
The rocket flew over Japan and landed in the Pacific Ocean, the Japanese broadcaster NHK said, citing its government.
"Our primary concern is to confirm safety and gather information," Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso told a news conference at his Tokyo office Sunday.
Resisting calls from President Barack Obama, Aso and Hu Jintao of China to call off the launch, North Korea had announced Saturday that preparations were complete to send communications satellite Kwangmyongsong-2 on a multistage rocket bound for the skies over Japan.
Tokyo deployed warships and Patriot missile interceptors off its northern coast to shoot down any debris that the North said might fall over the area.
U.S. and South Korean warships equipped with missile interceptors also plied the waters between the Korean peninsula and Japan to monitor the launch.
Russia, meanwhile, scrambled fighter jets to its Far East in case any debris hits its territory, Russian news reports said.
North Korea pushed ahead with the launch despite mounting international pressure to cancel a liftoff Obama warned Friday would be a "provocative" act.
South Korea, the U.S. and Japan said earlier in the week they would take North Korea to the U.N. Security Council for an act they say is banned under a 2006 resolution barring Pyongyang from ballistic activity.
UNITED NATIONS – The U.N. Security Council is poised to hold an emergency session Sunday to deal with North Korea's rocket launch.
Japan requested an emergency session Sunday among diplomats on the 15-nation council that handles threats to international peace and security, said Yutaka Arima, a spokesman for Japan's United Nations mission.
That request occurred within minutes of the launch, he said.
Approval of a council meeting will come after certain formalities are handled, said Marco Morales, a spokesman for Claude Heller, Mexico's ambassador to the U.N. Mexico holds the council presidency this month.
"As soon as we get the letter, we'll call for a meeting to be held as soon as possible," Morales said.
The U.S. and South Korean governments confirmed North Korea launched a long-range rocket launch from its east coast base that flew over Japan.
North Korea says it was putting a communications satellite into space. The U.S., South Korea, Japan and others suspect Pyongyang of using the launch to improperly test long-range missile technology.
Diplomats at the U.N. say the U.S., Britain, France and South Korea already have begun discussing a possible Security Council resolution to reaffirm its existing sanctions on North Korea.
Those sanctions were imposed in 2006 in an attempt to persuade North Korea to shelve its nuclear program and halt long-range missile tests.
The diplomats said the U.S., Britain and France, each of which holds veto power on the 15-nation council, are unlikely to seek new sanctions in the face of probable resistance from China, North Korea's closest ally, and Russia, the other two nations with veto power.
They spoke on condition of anonymity, because of the sensitive nature of the discussions.

north korea is a fucking shithole. it's like a giant prison, nobody has food, electricity shut off at night, forced labor, everyone worships their leader like he was fucking god. near 99% of the people living in north korean are north korean.
regular people are not allowed to drive. they have big, perfectly maintained roads, but no one driving on them. tourists are only aloud to take pictures of certain things, there is always someone watching you. they also have the fourth largest army in the world

Ummmmm...Ok, no one seemed to notice the two important details here, so Im going to point them out:
It was a supposed "Communication Satellite" launch. Sats go into space. If it was an actual sat launch, THEY FAILED. AGAIN. On a side note, should North Korea ever go to war with the East Sea, I am confident in their continued ability to bomb the fuck out of it.
The rest of the world has been ignoring North Korea again and focusing on other areas of the world, as well as South Koreas new president pretty much giving the Kim regime the middle finger by actually making them prove that they are earning the aid they have been given by the South, I.E. Nuclear programs not being shut down, therefore less aid (oil,food,clothing,MONEY) being handed to the north. They throw tantrums to get attention. GO DPRK!
I love Korea and am anxetiously awaiting the day that the insane Commuinist/Monarchy/Dynasty thing leading that country is finally over thrown. 안녕히게세요

around 2 to 3 billion dollars, we're talking pre `1950's rates.
It aint cheap and it takes allot of time to build a warhead that can be launched.

Though North Korea has a huge army, if they ever tried to bomb South Korea, they'd be taken out within a few days. You'd have Japanese, American and South Korean troops, planes, and missiles being sent straight to Pyongyang to wipe the fuckers out.

Its not nuking south Korea that they should be worried about, its the long range artillary on the border that is the issue. If they decide to do anything soul is going to be the first place leveled, followed by a interesting situation. They have literally millions of troops, but the "troops" are the ENTIRE population. From age 12 to 70 and every thing in between I believe is all considered military aged. from 18-whenever they are done with you is active duty military, before and after you are in the "peoples reserve defense force" or something. This is a country that spends more money on weapons than food, if they initiated a conflict I would be curious to see how long they could actually fight with as little oil and food as they have. As for them and China, twenty years ago they were tight. Now its more like your binge drinking freeloading asshole roommate. You share a living area and have to put up with him, but really you are just praying that he will move out. Im in the military, Im studying Korean, and I have spent time in Korea. This is a subject I am very passionate about, and I feel 100% confident when I say this: I CANT BELIEVE THEY FUCKED UP ANOTHER ATTEMPT AT LOOKING POWERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!HAAHHHHAHHAHHAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHAHA HAHAHAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!! NK is all bark, no bite and will continue to be that way until they stop treating Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung as devine deities and there working close revolts. Sadly...I dont think this will ever happen.

i never say this but i really do see this situation as a load of media hype, because it really is a good story. "Shitty Fascist Country Strives for Nuclear Proliferation" and you all need to think critically about this situation and quit freaking out
here's my take on it
1) the reports that i have read show that n.korea can create 6-7 weapons TOPS, now the threat of a single nuclear weapon is serious, but the fact that if everything goes perfectly for them they can only create 6 weapons tells me that they wont even be able to produce one successfully, because everybody knows that nothing works out perfectly in the real world, and the best and the brightest in nuclear physics are definitely not located in north korea at the moment
remember their first test? that shit went in the air for 40 seconds and then failed miserably, they dont have the means to successfully create a nuclear arsenal
2) none of the other states around north korea trusts those retards with nuclear weapons, china is an "ally" but china is not stupid, they know that north korea is not to be trusted
because nobody trusts them, if everything worked perfectly and they did use a bomb, that entire country would be demolished within a month from multiple fronts. its like putting a pistol in the hands of a kid in a classroom, they don't understand the consequences of their actions
where you REALLY need to focus your attention is Pakistan. Pakistan is very unstable with multiple factions with drastically different ideologies fighting for power. it also borders afghanistan, so america has a vested interest in this place
heres the CLINCHER, they already have a nuclear arsenal, they are not part of the Nuclear Non Proliferation treaty, and they publicly use their nuclear arsenal to keep India at bay
