I'd like to agree with this any other time, but when you're at a legit sushi spot, you tip the chef, and MAYBE the server.
Unless you're at a shit spot, the sushi chef makes your rolls painstakingly, right in front of you.
Spider, SuperTuna, Electric Eel blowtorched while the tiny girl just gives you water and some plates.
Tip your server minimally at sushi bars. The chef deserves the main payment.
Anywhere else, tip your server at least 18% for putting up with your stupid bullshit, pig-like manners and cleanliness, and simple obnoxiousness.

HE HAS SPOKEN!
Hahah Nick Tary is the worst dude ever.
"You need sustenance to be around people?"
Sometimes you hang out with people for an extended period of time resulting in many people getting hungry at the same time and eating food together.. what kind of fucking question is that?

word, nick tary is such a pompous dick.
but that's not the point of this thread. in my opinion, pizza is the most "group-friendly" food ever. it's so big that one person usually cannot eat it on his own.

Chicken wings put people in the fucking zone. I know that I don't do much talking once the wings arrive, I'm too busy enjoying and getting dirty. Plus its not like people are about to bro out and slap-dap when their hands are covered in buffalo sauce.
Pizza is more social, chicken wings are more satisfying to eat.

the problem with pizza is there is always that one asshole that has no money yet eats the most slices, wings, you get your own order.
also, ive never gotten wings to go, ive def had pizza to go/delivered

see i think that reinforces my thought that pizza is the better group-friendly food: everyone shares off of the same order (even the douche who doesn't pay but hey... we've all been there).
also, like the guy before us said, people chow down on the wings but i'd argue that people talk more while munching on the pizza.
I'm pissed the travel channel went to iguanas and didn't mention the orange sauce. that shit is off the heezy.

thats at the mexer spot next door, and honestly, besides the sauce, everything else blows.
Nick Tary saved this thread from it's poor subject matter.

Thats why wings are better.. whether youre with two friends or ten everyone will just shut the fuck up and eat for a few minutes.

i agree...which is why, by definition, this is not a social food. no one wants to talk!

since the summer i've been tainted by the goodness of grilled wings, fried wings taste terrible compared to these jawns. make your own sauce, cook your own wings, spend way less money and enjoy that shit exactly how you want it to taste

why is tipping expected in the US, i've hardly ever tipped in aus, unless the person serving me goes like above and beyond, i don't feel i should tip them.
I tipped heaps in thailand but mainly because i was living like a king and most meals were no more than $4 or $5, but thai people are super friendly and helpful
I think even if i were in the US i wouldnt tip, i dont see the point in tipping just because its a custom, earn your damn tips

This is why people in the restaurant business hate foreigners. They do earn their tips by taking your order and bringing you your food and bill and whatever else you need. Their employers don't pay them shit so not tipping is basically just not paying them for their service.

Waiters here are paid well below minimum wage based solely on the fact that people do tip. Unless the person serving you was absolutely horrible in every aspect, then you should be tipping.
You sound like an asshole that just watched Reservoir Dogs for the first time.

This. I used to work at a restaurant that was in a hotel mostly filled with foreigners. They usually were ballers or cheap ass mother fuckers. I agree with Nick Tary, tip the chef, because then I would get hourly and tips :D .

Isnt that what their employer is for, why should I pay for their service?
So if i went to a restaurant and went into the kitchen and helped myself, I'd be exempt from paying tips?

Dude! It is simple to understand. People tip in the US and have been for so long that servers do not get paid hourly because they make that and more in tips. What the fuck don't you understand about that? Why is a custom a custom, because people have been doing it for mad long. Also now I know if I ever go out of the country I will not tip.
Also if you came back into my kitchen and started helping your self I would beat your ass or stab you with one of many knifes laying around.
im not sure if youve ever worked in a restaurant, but its one of the worst working environments. youre dealing with peoples food and money, which is bad and means you have to put up with assholes daily. giving a tip means you appreciate their attitude and hard work. plus i bet Australian chefs spit in more meals than American chefs

Working in restaurants is awesome. It is the only job I have had since I was 15 and I am 22 now, except for maybe a year telemarketing. Eating food all day and chilling with fine waitresses is the shit. Also being able to cop bulk cheap ingredients is also a plus. Shit gets hectic at times but that is what kind of makes it fun, controlled chaos. Cooking is one of the many jobs that you can use all of your senses everyday. Food man FOOD! Food is great, everything about it, from planting or birth, to raising, to prepping to cooking, to eating. Shit is life. Food is awesome. Being a server on the other hand, eh, I was a expo / waiter once and that shit was a chill job until dealing with stupid fucks, especially stupid fucks that don't tip.

so do you keep your own tips personal, or do you pool the tips at the end of a shift and split it?
Im sorry you got your knickers in a twist, i was simply trying to understand the reasoning behind it,
sure we have tip jars in restuarants in aus, but its like you throw in your change from your bill (if you want) people don't look down their nose at you if you don't, and you can put it whateva you want, no set percentage.

Also another thing that makes it tight, is usually people in that industry are somewhat alike. They like to eat good food, drink good drinks and after work get FUCKED up. Then sleep in most of the day and do it over. I have never spit in someones food, one time a cop ordered some food and I threw the fillet on the ground and stepped on it with my nasty shoes but that is all.
AHHA it's straight, it is just pretty easy to understand, people have been doing it forever in this part of the world so it continues and employers and businesses have adapted to that so they don't pay hourly to servers. Severs get tipped and that is theirs. Also I cook, I would never serve people.

NO.. the employer gives them a place to work and earn money.
If you went and told the cooks what you want and werent served by a server, then no you wouldn't have to tip anyone.. that shouldn't be too hard to understand.
In general, if you're foreign and don't understand how a system works you should just go along with what other people are doing instead of being a dick and acting like you know better.
