yeah plugins are your best bet. I use Motion, and i picked up a plugin called particlemetrix by Idustrial Revolution. http://idustrialrevolution.com/plugins/particlemetrix/index.html

For AE im not sure whats available, but it would be alot easier to use a plugin than try to do it by hand.
