its the damn flash i was using, a vivitar 283, it was at its lowest setting and probably 70 feet away. curses!

I liked the shot with the hard shadow, little more fill on the skaters face would have been good.

Also there is an attachment for the vivitar 283 that allows it to have variable power "VP-1" they are a bit on the hard to find side but keep checking ebay and you will get one for $15 ish.

There is also a hack to achive the same with a 100k variable restior, on the strobist page : http://strobist.blogspot.com/2007/02/hack-e-flash-heaven.html

well, it wasn't cropped in photoshopped, the shot ended up like that because there's a cliff behind me. i shot it at 28mm, and it would have been really hard to shoot from another rock because the longest focal length i had was 80mm with me and a lot of the 'cliff' faces would have been blocked from view if i moved to another area. i wish i could have gotten her whole body in the shot, but it's my first panorama attempt and i didn't have the foresight to try a different composition.

i can answer two of thoes with good reasoning. friends in the shot because it was 1 oclock at the biggest indoor skteapark on the east coast, so you know it happens some times :'(, and i was far away because i was trying to stay out of the way of the other people skating/biking there.

im not a very aggressive photographer i guess haha

Dude, Tim, you are going to be so stoked. I bought another LCA when I heard they were being discontinued. I cant imagine ever being without one.

and yeah, the LCA with Coloursplash flash (essential), fuji 400, set the exposure to A and away you go...

Herman
18.03.2007, 01:23
man these toy cameras are so attractive, I think I might get a colorsplash camera tomorrow, it seems similar to the lc a. Plus I just got 26 rolls of Fujifilm superia 200 for $10 today at a rummage sale which I'm pretty stoked about, its expired by two months which is nothing for the price. But yeah what do you guys think about the colorsplash camera? Seems cool.
rules:
1. Take your LOMO everywhere you go and whenever you go.
2. Use it any time - day or night.
3. Lomography is not an interference in your life, but a part of it.
4. Shoot from the hip.
5. Approach the objects of your lomographic desire as close as possible.
6. Don't think.
7. Be fast.
8. You don't have to know beforehand what you've captured on film.
9. You don't have to know afterwards, either.
10. Don't worry about the rules.

The picture wasn't a recreation of a famous picture. Well, it might have been by accident. It's a senior picture I was editing and I when I was adjusting the shadow and highlight in RAW everything looked great except for the face. So I made two copies, one with the contrast on the whole picture I liked and one with the contrast on the face I liked. Then, I went into cs2 and tried to layer mask the good face on there but I still couldn't get the face right so I just said fuck it and cropped it square format. I've been looking at a lot of medium format pictures recently and I love it. As far as the arms, I'm a fucking idiot when it comes to posing people haha

Sorry for the long drawn out explanation.

here's the best I could do with the face

P.S. You might be asking yourself. Why in the world would you do a Senior Portrait in RAW. Well, the answer is that I'm only doing one this year and the family has always paid more than I've asked for so I was like why the hell not.

i don't know. you could bring out the highlights and midtones of her face a lot more, but then it would either be too contrasty (if you kept the same shadows) or it would be too soft and grayish if you upped all of the levels. i just added a white overlay layer at 20% opacity and masked her body out, then used the brush tool to dodge different areas. took about 10 minutes, but if you put some time into it you could bring her face out pretty well and still look natural.

tis all good. adding new layers and using the brush to darken shadows or brighten highlights is a much better option imo, then simply using the dodge and burn tools. adding layers means that all of the editing is non destructive just like if you were adding any other adjustment layer. plus it gives you the control options of masks. so if you add a white overlay layer and use a soft white brush you can incremently 'paint' more highlights onto her face and lighten her midtones. it takes a little bit of time to add in affectively and naturally, but if you keep a really soft brush (like 8% opacity and 40% flow) then you can just continually brush over the areas you want. you can do the same with a gray multiply layer and a black brush to darken shadows. it'd work well with RAW since you can just re-edit/delete/add-new layers all you want without affecting the actual photo.

for her eyes though, i added just a plain normal transparent layer and brushed some white onto her eyes then lowered the transparency of the layer to somethign like 20-30% to maintain the color filter look that you had. otherwise the eyes either were too dark, became a sickly yellowish color, or were super bright and scary.

and i also added a little bit of an unsharp mask to make the image pop a little bit more. this doesn't work super well with a 72dpi picture form the internet since it makes pixelation even worse, but it would work well with the original file.

although kyle is very tan, this false skin tone has an explanation.

1] the lights at that park are weird and i couldn't find a good WB, even with preset.

2] underexposure

3] i have my set my camera for higher contrast and more vibrant colors.

have you shot a lot of film before? i ask because slide film is really cool to shoot with, but you really have to be careful to get the correct exposure when shooting. normal film allows for far more exposure error (up to several stops in some cases), but if you're off even 1/2 a stop on slide then it will turn out poorly.

The sharpening got messed up and I didn't notice until after it was all saved and closed. I'll probably fix it later.

a pic I made at queensday....

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/194/481475517_d87b8885c0.jpg

I got the camera (eos 50 / 20mm / fuji superia 400 ) from a friend of mine who went for a piss. And I was pissdrunk at this time. The guy in the picture is Gijs from www.shopkaput.com

This is the flickr of Jos, the guy from the camera:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joskraaijeveld

And for a "fun" note. Jos was so wasted that he jumped from a truck on his flipflops and broke his collarbone later on that evening. Well ...anyway..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v674/funky_mike/EF5.jpg
this is pretty much the entire updraft region of the supercell that produced the historical Greensburg EF5. it's the first EF5 ever, and this storm displayed amazing characteristics that are rarely seen. once every 10 years a storm like this happens. i just so happened to forecast storng tornadoes for the area. so me and my chase partner went for it. the tornado is just reaching 1 mile wide at this point.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v674/funky_mike/EF5-2.jpg
This is as its about to cross the highway and barrel into Greensburg. over a mile wide and displaying signatures on doppler radar that have never been seen.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v674/funky_mike/EF5-4-1.jpg
It is just leaving Greensburg. Almost 2 miles wide.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v674/funky_mike/CG.jpg
a nice tripple bolt strike. i love lightning pictures. so easy, and so rewarding.

i actually just sold partial rights to the 1st and 3rd pictures to Warren Faidley, one of the worlds most famous storm chaser and leading distributor of storm footage.

you need a battery grip/pack, it will give you more fps, and result in something worth looking at

False, nothing will boost the FPS on a D50.

Yea, nothing will boost fps on any dslr. They have no motor. They only give you more battery and vertical shutter release. Put one on a 35mm and it will boost fps.

put a motor drive on some SLR's and you will gain more fps, a battery grip will do nothing.

well im not sure how nikon is but my canon gains more fps with a battery grip, its got the verticle shutter release and must combine a motor drive with the grip

The fps boost on film cameras are only so because it can give extra juice to the fork which allows the film to rotate faster which means more fps when adding a motor.

In digital it's only the shutterblades being manipulated so having a motorwinder on a dslr will absolutely not give it more fps.

i like the last one more because the diffused lighting makes her features look better then the harsher lighting of the first one. her skin also has a lot more color since the harsh lighting in the first one makes her look like an albino. i like the angle in the second one a little better too. although i like how the first one has the entire seat thing in it which kind adds symmetry. overall i think the second one has a better pose, better lighting, better colors (the sepia-ish warming helps a lot), and perhaps a better composition.

thankyou very much, she is quite a pale girl haha, and didnt take kindly to lighting, i tried to use a reflector to bounce some of the fading light onto her but it didnt work out

the bottom shot is the same as the 2nd shot before i took it into post, i just wanted to experiment with a different crop

i think if i use the crop of the 2nd photo on the bottom image it will work better

thankyou again

I'd have to say I like the first shot better. The pose is more natural and her face also looks more natural. I think the lighting is not so terrible and it even adds to it. It kind of looks like she's looking off into the sun as though something is approaching. Plus I like that you can see more of the scene in the first one.

i like seeing more of the scene, but the light in the first one makes almost her entire face and arms into highlights which is kind of blinding imo.
