No i just like to see pictures that appeal to the eye, and acne is not the most appealing feature. He doesnt have alot, but it does make a difference.

Photoshop is lame for those kinds of things, I'd rather have realism than some cheap photoshopped computer shit. Maybe if you're a professional photographer this would be good, but for art I say no to post processing.

Well not to insult Kevin at all, because he has a whole bunch of talent, but with a standard portrait like that, there isnt really an artsy side. I dont know maybe its just a habit because its like automatic for me to do that from the studio.

It was just shot with an attempted ringlight that really didn;'t come out good but its pretty good for portraits though.
I just use photoshop for levels, saturation, maybe a little USM.

ehh I'm going to have to disagree and agree with Drew on this topic.
I think for this portrait it is okay to take out the acne. I think in any picture it is okay to remove something in the background to make it more pleasant to the eye. I also think photoshop is art. Have you seen some of the crazy things they made in like 20 hours? I dont see those from everyone.

there's a HUGE difference between digital art, and photography. removing unpleasant things from a photograph using photoshop is NOT photography. if you can't do it in the dark room or without digital assistance, then it's a photomanipulation. you're lying about what's there by labeling it as a photograph. there's a lot of controversy about that, like when a news journalist spliced together 3 different pictures of a soldier in iraq with kids to get the feel that he wanted. it definitely was not the feeling portrayed by any of the three photographs individualy. and that's why he got fired.
I guess if all you want to do is please the eye than go ahead and photoshop eye pleasing things into your piece. I agree with chimbaktu in that it is no longer photography when you take things out or put things in digitally. Its post processing. Honestly though, I can't tell you've photoshopped that portrait, its well done, but just knowing that it was enhanced with photoshop kind of turns me off. I don't even think the pimples are that bad to begin with. Just my opinion though.
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1061/525682681_ce730a93f4.jpg
so what about spotting black and white prints, or color prints with dyes. thats what people used to do (and some still). pro photographers have been removing unwanted color and blemishes for years and years with dyes and a paintbrush, which is basically the same as removing blemeshes in photoshop. we have an artist and my lab that i work at that does that for her job.
chimbaktu
02.06.2007, 16:25
yeah, people do that for fashion magazines and ads....not for art or to call it photography.
drew_amato
03.06.2007, 10:13
Yeah but combining multiple images to reveal to millions of people about a war is a little bit more intense then a simple portrait. Post processing is fine in my book, as long as you know how to do it without an extensive amount.

Holy fuck. Those 360 panos are tight. Howd you do that/? It looks like your hovering in the air pointing straight down.
andrew nemo
04.06.2007, 23:01
First you have to learn how to take 360 panoramos.
Then you go to Photoshop CS or higher and make the image into a square (1000x1000, 2000x2000, etc)
Rotate it by 180.
Apply the Polar Coordinates filter under the Distort option.
Then in order to have the center of the planet not being pulled apart and looking all weird, you have to take a Nadir shot, which is a shot of what's underneath the tripod.
There's are bunch of tutorials online, search it on Google.

3rd shot is kinda cool, exept those frames are horrible..
they are on there because they have all been printed at my work where there are a lot of print sizes, but a lot of times the exact dimensions of the shot i want doesent match up with a print size, so i have to make the canvas larger, and i was to lazy to crop the file again after it was printed.

Sorry about the size. haha one of the first photos I've taken of my girlfriend.
Im not dissing your or your girlfriend. But whats up with zombie-stance? She looks like she wants to sink into the ground. Besides that, the image is rather boring, it looks like a snapshot that belongs in the back of a family album. The lightning is good, but the setting, composition and the stance just kills it.
Haha I know all of this I was just juiced to see my old pictures.
I've been taking pictures for about two years now and looking back I got a little sentimental. I remember first starting out on film and a dark room for a few months, working properly on exposure and what not... then becoming a hermit in the local libaries and barns and nobles just reading up on photography legends.
Here's another one of my old ones.

aaron, maybe use a higher f-stop then?? i dont know what you shot at but since the reflection is relatively sharp, i assumed you shot wide open to compensate for the high shutter speed used to make sure the water didnt blur.
then again, i wasnt there.
here are some from a friends camera (i havent used digital in a couple of months)
this one would be better with wide angle but my pal doesnt have one so this is what we work with. you cant see it in the image but he lands on a slab of concrete.

i sold it in an attempt to reconnect myself with the artistic edge (film) of photography instead of the infromative (skating) one. ive really grown to hate the crisp clean feel of digital but im buying my friends d70 (the one used above) when i save up the money for it because im a sap.
i do love film the film though :[

From what I remember I was at about a 5.6 which is around the lens's sweet spot...but also was using a circular pol, so there was a filter factor...
was just a random pic from a location scout, ended up liking it when I captured it. Maybe if I ever go back I will try to get a better time of day or something...
adlavinsky, if you do go back, try using a little flash to brighten the grass in the foreground.
there's my 2 cents

Oh damn, I've been contemplating on selling my D70s and either upgrading to a D2 series or getting an F100 along with an RB67 and go completely film for a while.
I recently got back into shooting film a few months ago and nothing beats a great shot coming back from the lab

when i sold my nikon i was hoping to upgrade to like a d80 or something like that but as it turns out ill just be getting the d70s. but all i want a digital for is skating shots, which seems kinda low on the totem pole so im not too disheartened. i figured i dont need super high res for anything significant.

most lenses "sweet spot" is at f8. that is where you will get by far the sharpest results.
but i like the picture personally.

Maybe its different with photography as opposed to cinematography, but with cinematography a 5.6 on most prime lenses is where the best results are...but thats all variable to the type of lens...
i dunno, i should stick to making movies haha

Matt, I've seen two skateboarding shots almost identical to your idea. It's sick though. I couldn't find the pictures. You should shoot it on real film next time : ). Also I'm pretty sure F11 is the hot spot on most Photography lenses.

just a 25 minute exposure of stars at the beach, its a pain in the ass waiting that long to make sure it came out but its fine if you have something to do.

Sick photos Erik, especially for a comp. Comps are hard to shoot and you did a good job.
For the first one:
+nice angle
+great timing
-flare from the flash, turn your flash, move it back. It kinda bothers me.
The Ross Kuhn shot:
+another good angle, I would have liked to seen a non fisheye shot of this spot
The disaster:
- we aren't getting the scope of how far the disaster is, you describe it in your caption but maybe a different angle would have helped?
-little hot on the stairs and skater, turn your flash down a stop
The last shot:
+not a very exciting spot for a photo but your angle, lighting and timing make it look fucking sick
good stuff, keep posting...

short picture story:
my friend bryan,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v495/chimbaktu/bryanholla.jpg
set out into a ghetto to discover as of yet unknown treasures. little did he know that after running into a crackhead, he would come across an amazing discovery that would change how he viewed the world.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v495/chimbaktu/keyboard.jpg
or should i say, heard the world. for this magical device is not made for sight nor taste nor smell nor feel, but for sound. this polyphonic rocker now had the greatest musical instrument to have ever been concieved of man. reluctant at first to accept the responsibility of the device, this casio keyboard could after all decide the fate of the world, he soon began the unearth the mystical powers hidden within.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v495/chimbaktu/bryankeyboard.jpg
changing the world is tiresome and time consuming, so to stay refreshed, he needed nourishment of the utmost quality.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v495/chimbaktu/rootbeer.jpg
and this (http://myspace.com/galtonsghost) my friends is the result of this life changing day.
can it decide the fate of rollerblading?

that rail is pretty crazy long, i was thinking about getting down all the way to the end but i just decided to go at that point in the rail. I do usually include the landing but just not in that one pic. But yea, i'll post up some better pics, had those handy in my imagshack,

maybe a tighter crop.

i would like that pic more if the vertical lines in the pic, (wall and metal pole) ran completely vertical. Just nit pics... great action and timing IMHO. I like the upgraded brightness and contrast too.

Crit on the photo by Andrew Brenan... could us some adjustments with brightness/contrast in PS. Action and steez is good, I don't like how the photo is too centered and the lurker in the back. I think you could get lower on this photo too. Kinda hard to I know, since you're probably position pretty close to the landing. Just gotta trust the rider knows you're there and won't stomp you.

I agree with you. Andrew even stated he would have prefered to get lower but was having a hard time I guess while still keeping the lines he wanted. We yelled at that one kid for lurking, we didn't even realize. hahaha. and yeah it is kindda dark. I don't have PS to play with the brightness/contrast or I would.
thanks for the critic though, i didn't notice the centering of the picture being as it is. but now that you say something I can see it.
and yes he doesn't trust me enough to not stomp him.
those pics are hot justin

Yes, I know. It's just a better picture quality than my other lens, so I prefer to use my fisheye/wideangle more.
Thanks nb.

It says "known" on his sidekick.
I was just wondering what it'd look like without some lines.
Doesn't look as good I don't think. Looks like he's grinding down a concrete eifle tower or some road block.
Here it is anyway. ( I am proud of my neatness though.)

so my friend had this awesome wig that made her look like uma thurman. so i decided to shoot the cover of pulp fiction and i think it came out pretty true to the cover with small taste of my own. im planning on making it look a little more vintage and ripped just like the cover. i did the whole shoot in photo class in school.

and ..here is a slideshow of my favorite pics throughout the last 4 years or something, itīs also a quite good summary of how good those years for me.
I think it will get that feeling accross, the pictures might not always be the best, but I love the feel they give me.
