meter the im light one or two full stops OVER the other flashes. If you're using a light meter if you meter the main flashes to be F5.6 then you'd want to meter the rim to be about F11.

this is one of my sculptures for my foundation's studies at school. my series is named after a comment made by a professor during my poorly put together midterm critique (which i failed). As I was being torn apart, she added that I am
not dedicated enough to your [my foundation] classes.
This series was greatly inspired by the work of Arlo Eisenberg. This sculpture was the result of a project, like most of my work. The objective was to create a box or container to hold something valuable or personal. Wheels are an important part of rollerblading, but always receive constant wear. I didn't want to hide that much of the wheels, so I did not incorporate a frame. Instead I guestimated and drilled four holes into a piece of wood (which was a piece of shit). I nailed a twin like board (same quality) on the bottom and then added two side walls. I was going to have clear glass on the top and front, but my professor said it was fine the way it was and to added some grey/black ink. So I took a paint brush and some india ink and painted the box and shaved down the side walls to make them look deteriorated. I also took a file to the sides and interior to make it look more beat up. Finally, I took this photo and fucked around in photoshop. reminds me of an early xsjado ad in my opinion. anyhow, enjoy. font by me. oh, and more photos tomorrow night.

The kids on SP are over anal. Unless you are posting a picture of Ansel Adams, they freak out about stupid shit. Kind of like the period of time where anything i posted on here, random kids would say things that didnt even make sense. I would rather have one person, who i know is good with a camera critique my photo, then a bunch of medocre kids who do nothing but sit online and read tutorials all day.

Timothy James Kelly
28.12.2007, 21:54
I think you'd be surprised how much you would learn just by lurking SP. Not even posting your own shit. Sure theres some loser kids who sit on it all day who never actually take photos. On the other hand theres kids that will be the next staff photographer for all the skateboard magazines.

Ill have to agree with Drew on this one. Most of those kids, although some talented, are 15-16 year old kids that just say what everyone else is saying. Everyone on that site has somewhat of a mindset of what a good photo should look like, not creativity what so ever. And you rarely get a legitimate critique. The site itself is a really good resource as far as skating photography goes. Ive learned a lot by looking through some of the articles. But personally I dont really see why a photographer needs to go out and post every photo on a forum, trying to get a critique. It's as if they are trying to gain approval or some shit. Its like those kids go take photos just so they can go home and upload it to sp. Kinda wack if you ask me. If i have a photo im proud of ill post it up somewhere, so others can see, but as long as I like it, i could give a shit what someone else has to say about it.

PS. I would of picked up those 120js from you but i just ordered some pw's and a l-358

hmm, i'd never been to skateperception before. looking at it, is it exclusively skateboarding?

and no offense to sp or those who frequent it, but i'd much rather go to a site like redbubble, or join a couple of good flickr groups for critiques. i think i'll have to agree with tomato on this one. being critiqued by accomplished adults seems more useful then being critiqued by pompous kids. even though there are some very good photos on sp from what i've seen, it doesn't seem like you would get much useful advice from looking at the comments.

Not sure if I would agree, I learned more on SP than I did lurking other sites, plus if you're looking for critiques on skating photos that's one of the best places IMO to post up since other sites like flickr most of them don't know how to shoot a good skating picture.

^work on directing your subjects....i donno much about stuff for portraits but i dont think that pose is too flatering for that girl....if your goal was to get a black backdrop you need to move your subject off the backdrop and flag the light so it isnt hitting the backround.

You both must have VERY low contrast monitors. On the side of that photo looks like you took either the dodge tool on 100 percent or a white paint tool and scribbled on the side to make the background white. Calibrate your monitors ASAP because that sure as hell is not a Shadow.

Edit:
I fucked with the levels of the photo to make the scribbles on the side more noticeable... Right side. I know i'm not the only one seeing this because i've asked other people to make sure I wasn't crazy.

Thanks dudes !

It was really nice to shoot with a tripod again, I broke my old one so I didn't have one for about 2 years.

I realized now how much I missed having one!

NB:
The pics could probably use some finetuning in PS, but my skills basically stop after cropping and resizing.
You could probably work the colours a bit and do some brightening here and there but I will just fuck it up.

I need some intro course basic PS skills or something. I basically come from shooting film and never got into PS. It's probably a good idea to spend some rainy weekends on that (and we have plenty of rainy weekend in Holland)

i was shooting with my d80 with a 50mm/1.8 and an sb800....the iso was pretty high actually cuz It was madd dark and it was too far away for my sb800 to be super effective...the iso was at 800, and my f stop was at 4.0 at 1/500....well for the 5th shot down at least. I'm sure they're all slightly different cuz i was still dicking around with settings around at that point. Idk...any suggestions for how i can get better lighting or suggestions for settings at such events as this??

Brad from Baltimore
10.03.2008, 23:30
That sounds about right. I am suppose to shoot a fashion show and i was thinking about either a light stand with a strobe off to the side triggered with a pw maybe 50 1.8 or 18-70 3.5 or i might just shoot with the 50 1.8 and use a sunpak 555 on camera with a diffuser. I'll let you know how it goes I'll post pictures online and show you what i come up with. I wish i bought that 85 2.8 for 50 bucks when i had the chance i think i would rather use that than the 50 oh well.

Thanks for the reply back.

it's nice to have the flexibility of the zoom lens if yer able to move around and stuff, but if you're stuck in 1 spot like i was, a fixed lens such as the 50 1.8 will do the trick

How do you adjust the apeture on a canon 40d? on the XT theres a button on the far left where your right thumb is.. . theres no button on this 40d.

it depends on what shooting mode you're in.

in Av (aperture priority) mode, the aperture is changed by the index finger dial above the shutter release

in Manual mode, the shutter is changed by the index finger dial, whereas the aperture is changed by the giant thumb dial on the back.

in Tv mode (shutter priority), you are changing the shutter speed with your index finger dial, and the camera chooses an appropriate aperture.

How do you adjust the apeture on a canon 40d? on the XT theres a button on the far left where your right thumb is.. . theres no button on this 40d.

you have to make sure that the switch is all the way up and not in the second setting (talking about turing on/off the dial)

Ah, thanks!

Dude his show was so amazing i don't think i can put words in to how amazing it was. Such an awesome guy. That show was sold out for a while and a lot of people were still trying to get tickets during the line up. A lot of kids drove like 4 to 5 hours to see him.

Probably would look cooler shot with a fisheye but i aint got one-uh dose!

Eh. That box is to big for fisheye.

Use fisheye to make things bigger, but when they are big enough then use long.

You have too many rules. Thats why your photos look like they came from a textbook.

NEMI was right in this sense. All the fisheye would have done would have made the skater smaller and the whole frame bigger. Fisheye is used to allow you to get close to the subject to get the action but still get the whole skater and object in the frame where as a normal lens the subject or the object would get cut out.

Box shots, unless shot from bascially sitting/ on the box while shooting, you should really use a regular 50mm lens a telephoto lens. A fisheye in this instance would have ruined the picture.

This is all my opinion though.

In spite of how hard I try, I can't get a good looking fisheye shot from a fly box.

I think what I was saying was using a fisheye in this shot and angle in particular would have not worked well.

mindmag's shot was from a close and low angle which works well with any fisheye shot.

oh, and i think a fisheye might look cool if i was up on a ladder a few feet from the bottom of the launch transition and off to the right or left of the skater. or maybe just a really wide wide-angle.
