That car is obviously a HDR the biggest clue is the dirty ass halo on the image. With some tweaking that picture would look pretty ill.

NEVER EVER EVER EVER UNDEREXPOSE AND THEN RAISE THE LEVELS.

That is unless you like a lot of noise. Always over expose and crush the levels, in post and you avoid getting noise.

You can recover a lot more in the highlights than you can in the blacks when shooting in raw.

Learn it, don't forget it.

I agree, the photo looks like it was over exposed by 2+ stops in which case the whites are blown out. If it was the case of highlights in the reflections from the lamps then I'd say you'd be fine to keep those blown out because no matter how much you under expose they will still be prominent.

It all really depends on the situation, If you underexpose TOO much you will get your blacks so clipped that it will give you this purplish noise when you bring the photo up by increasing exposure or adding fill light. Plus you lose A LOT of detail by bringing up clipped blacks.

I still say, unless you have a dominantly white or light colored composition, it's better to over expose a little bit and crunch the blacks and preserve the detail than to up the exposure in turn getting this purple grain and losing detail in the image.

No still, using recovery in raw converters you can "recover" like 80% of that detail in what looks like blown out areas, and you can further accentuate that by burning in details in photoshop or whatever, or however you want to edit it with blending modes or whatever.

If you underexpose and increase the levels any you're going to make the noise that much more apparent. Sure you can use noise ninja or whatever to get rid of the noise, but then it takes away from the sharpness and detail of the photo. That's where overexposing, and by overexposing i mean like half a stop, a stop max, and then recovering your highlights and crushing blacks is the way to go. I mean this is getting into being really critical of photos, but if you ever want to shoot photography professionally for publications or like for stock photo sites, etc. it's really important. They won't accept any amount of artifacting, noise, stuff that's obviously been run through noise reduction, whatever.

I will say that you're right in that shooting a correctly exposed picture, so that you don't have to edit it (much) is infinitely better than over, or under exposing to correct. But that's not always the case. Also doing nice HDRs is a good way to get around this, but that's not always possible either, and brings in a whole new set of problems.

it's more or less: i make 5 or more picts with different exposures short ones for the sky and long ones for the foreground, that i have everything ligthend up well and CS2 put it together for me? wow..

HDR with CS2 FTL. Use Photomatix...that program is designed for HDRs. People seem to attach a negative stygma to HDRs...i dont think they are bad aslong as they are moderate and dont have halos. A horrid plasticy looking HDR is my pet hate.

You can achieve that look by duplicating the photo, then adding gaussian blur to the copy then overlay it and mess around with the opacity.

I think you'd be surprised to find out the kind of photos i'm into. I don't even like skatephotogaphy. I'm not a photo nazi at all, i'm just real with you. Haha, I have no comment on that. We have completely different views on photography. I wasn't hating on the picture, I was actually telling Nemo earlier that I thought with it was pretty sweet it just needed some separation from the background, post processing opinions aside.

diffusion is cool and all, when its subtle and it looks like an optical filter....anything more then that looks like a mexican year book picture (not trying to be racist but my yearbook is full of them, cheesy over diffused portraits)

first time really shooting with my Sigma 17-70 that I just purchased used from someone off a Canon forum. The colors came out really well, I was pleasantly surprised. A lot better than colors I can get out of my 50mm 1.8 on most days.

Messed around with a leftover/toss away shot due to out of focus eyes subject.

I increased black clipping and contrast a little bit and then converted to grayscale.

This is the result. I think it gives it that Noir type feel to it with the lit up subject but everything else being in the dark.

Kevinphan, I wanna give you some of the best advice I have ever received, most of those photos are pictures of nothing. So ask yourself why you would take a picture of something that isn't there? I'm not trying to be a huge dick but most of those are boring and lack in content. You can only go so far with visual stimulation.

its a matter of finding a low contrast scene. lights create pictures that have hotspots and create unwanted focal points. some of the shots have a few stray lights here and there that dont do any damage, but generally with a lot of lights in the picture you have to expose for them or overexpose them for the building, so ive tryed to just find buildings or angles that hide the lights.
the second image is my favorite out of the series of 40. its about an 8min exposure at f22, this is the middle bracket of the 3 shots i took, 1 under 1 stop 1 over a stop. the shitty thing about bracketing with exposures this long is that one of the exposures, the 1 stop overexposure, was 16mins long, and it wasnt even the shot I used. its lit by the moon, and i painted in the shadows on the side of the building where all the glass hasent busted out with a flashlight.


the thing about that picture is that its in a really skechy part of buffalo, and i was alone and it was 1:30 in the morning in February, and fucking freezing. so this is what happened: Im in the middle of an exposure, and I start hearing footsteps behind me. Im thinking what the fuck, i dont want to have to deal with this. So i flip open the knife in my jacket, and get the maglight ready to hit someone with. So i start to see the top of a head appear out of the shadows behind me, i whip around really quickly expecting some toothless crackhead figurung im gonna have to beat his ass, and like 3 feet from me is a deer staring me right in the face. I just about jumped out of my skin, but he froze and just stood there staring at me, he ate some grass at my feet and turned around and walked back to like 4 more deer that had just been chilling. it was so fucking weird, i expected the dear to freek and take off but, i dont tknow if it was the cold, or the night, or the fact that generally deer dont wander around cities, but he was cool with me. i laughed my ass about it later at my house.

im still shooting these, its a lot of fun and Buffalo has tons of buildings like this around. it was such a booming city in the early 1900s and now its a decaying shithole in certain parts. what i dont get is the city demolishes frank lloyd rights larkin soap co building, but can condem these plases and just get rid of them. well in any event it works to my advantage. im going to make a book when i feel satisfied that ive got enough to make something killer.


there was some deer here too, and when i was leaving a cop was wondering what i was doing, saw the camera on my tripod over my shoulder, and said to "watch your ass around here"

I used a fairly large circular softbox on the right, large circular reflector curved on the left, Reflector below and another slightly above it and another softbox to light the background. I think that was about it. Maybe another reflector somewhere, I like reflectors haha
