well, keep an eye out for more interesting compositions and if you ever have a moment where you think to yourself, "is this photo good?" it probrally isn't.

BE REALLY HARD ON YOURSELF.
BE YOUR OWN WORST CRITIC.

Also, be more experimental... the way I learned light was by not using it correctly.

Drew, the lighting on this second post is better than that first one of you. There was way to much white between your chin and down on the other one.

This one looks way better with the purple, but it's still kind of hot on her chest area. Nothing some photoshop couldn't fix, though. I definitely dig it.

Was on my way to go skate with some kids getting into rollerblading at this park in a near by city and i saw this field. Used my Nikon on a flashstand actually to get above the high crops and used a single speedlight hand held to get this. One was taken closed, another wide open which blended the oranges a bit too much.

i think it suits this shot, its not like just the eyes are in focus, or her nose....plus its so tightly framed, its not like you need to see anything more then fuzzy bokeh in the background

I'm not comparing this to Steve McCurry or anything, but if you look at most of his portrait work, most of it is very shallow...its all taste

Using a 1.8 for a portrait is perfectly fine. There is nothing in the background of interest that needs to be in focus.

I asked to get a 16x20 print made from 35mm Velvia 50, I guess they scanned the image, then printed and I ended up having to pay for both, which wasn't specified. Came out to $87, this was from a pro lab.

I checked the metadata of the file, and it was scanned wtih a Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 ED at 3678 x 5648. I just couldn't believe I got one print and a scan, and after takes came to roughly $100....damn

i work at a pro lab and our 16x20 are only 28 bucks, and a righ res scan is like 7.95. you got way ripped off.

pro labs do so much work that when ordering stuff you really need to specify exactly what you need. "i need enough resolution for a 16x20 print" is what you should have asked for. the problem is that not everybody at the counter actually cares what they do and dont pay attention to details. im on top of every order that comes in and make sure any problem that may arise is know, ie. crops, color, etc. if you go back see if they match prices. the name of the lab i work at is Color Tech, its in Buffalo NY. tell them you've got a friend that works at a lab and what you were charged was pretty high.

I actually called the lab a few minutes ago and was told it should have been $50 in total, and that the error was at the photography store where I dropped off and payed for the film.

Just an impromptu photoshoot with my girlfriend last night. No umbrellas or anything and it was very windy, resulting in her hair blowing in her face. Lazy and used autofocus which caught her hair and not her face, but i still dig it.

agreed...

a tad bit tacky...subtletly in business cards goes a long way, people will notice things like the kind of paper you print on and the kind of printing that is done (like thermography) long before they can appreciate a busy skate picture and a quote you didn't write. I'd also stick to one good font, rather than 3 random fonts. The only one that looks decent is the bottom font of the contact side.

nb what you shoot that street stuff on? Canon 1d shots 1,2 and 4 were all taken using a 50mm 1.8 lens and shot 3 from my latest post I used the 20mm 2.8 canon L lens.

I use a tokina 10-17mm aswell but only like to really shoot animals, cars and skating with it.
