Despite the fact that you can be a huge prick when the mood strikes, I really must say that you are an amazing photographer and I really hope you make money doing it.

And you seem humble about your skills, which is admirable; most photographers I know that are any amount of decent have huge egos in all aspects of their lives.

meaning i should not have photochopped the flash reflections outta my eyes? Catch lights is an easier term to know for it but yes eye light also. Im going to copy and paste from wikipedia because im lazy like that.

Catch light or catchlight is a photography term used to describe either the specular highlight in a subject's eye from a light source, or the light source itself. While catch lights are often aesthetically desirable, and produced by light reflecting from the front surfaces of the eye. Especially in portraiture, eyes without catch lights are often said to appear dull or lifeless. Lighting is often arranged in studio portraits specifically to create attractive catch lights.

As a specific light source, a catch light is usually fairly dim or focused, as to not affect any other part of the scene or face. Many other lighting methods, however, are known for the distinctive or unique catch light they produce. Among those methods are ring lights, which produce several highlights in a ring, and large softboxes, which produce large, square highlights.

Was saving this as a potential entry into a photo contest exposing downtown living in Pittsburgh, but I decided to go with a different photo. The point of this photo is that in Pittsburgh there is a famous eatery known as Primanti Brothers. They are well known for putting french fries and cole slaw on every sandwich they make and it is widely considered to be the traditional sandwich of steelworkers in Pittsburgh. The photo shows people still enjoying it today. What I like most about the photo is that the one way sign is pointing in the direction of the restaurant as if to say "In Pittsburgh, there is only one place you need to eat"

i normally don't put write ups with photos, but i felt like this one needed it. Feedback is awsome

nick_k
12.09.2008, 01:44
nice one dave, I would have just framed it a little more to the left so that the one way sign didn't cut off some of the other part but it looks sweet

davedinuzzo
12.09.2008, 06:10
thanks nick,

i think if I had framed just slightly left so that the one way sign was right on the edge of the shot, I would have gotten the back end of a car on the far right of the frame and I didn't want 1/2 a car in the picture. I've been fairly handicapped by only having a fisheye and a 50mm for the past month or two. I will hopefully be upgrading my collection this weekend though with 4 new lenses

what's the money canon? the lens I have on there now is a 28-135mm canon ultra sonic. It's got the thread at the front where i can attach one, or would I attach the fish eye directly to the camera itself?

It's evident you dont know much about lenses then. Google for prices but yea the 15mm canon is out of your price range I think. Do NOT buy a screw on fisheye...theyre a waste of money and produce shit pictures.

I think there is a sigma fisheye aswell or something...try finding that...

I really like this photo, few things that I thought might be able to improve it, shallow depth of field, a tad more contrast and saturation, and framing it without that sign on the right. Photo is sick though man.

my gripe with the shot is the right side of the frame. its a shame that you couldent have used the sign to block out the bud light sign. if you could have, it would have allowed the name of the resturant/bar to show better

dave i think a cool way to shoot that restaurant with the one-way sign would have been to get on a stepladder or something, with a wider lens and a tall tripod, closer to the sign... that way you could have emphasized the sign more... maybe with the sign out of focus, and a long exposure so the people are blurred but the neon is sharp.

Looks like a really fun rail. There may be a little too many guys on that rail. It's fine to leave more to the imagination, y a know. But it looks great. Next time I would probably use about 1/4 of those pictures. But that's just me.

:D Thanks Davengo! You have no idea how much that means to me.

I'm actually kind of glad that I fucked that one up. I really love the way it came out.

Also, I got my first roll of colour film from my Lubie developed the other day. I really fucked it up, and only two pictures came out.

did you flash the film? or just double exp attempts gone awry?

natelessard
28.10.2008, 20:33
I honestly have no idea. I'm pretty sure I remember advancing the film, actually.

What's flashing the film?

Also, while I was coming home one day, the little metal rod that holds on the back and acts as a hinge fell out in the middle of a busy street. I had to ride my bike home, holding the back closed and hoping that I wouldn't expose the film. I guess it happened though, because there were only two pictures that came out.

flashing or fogging is the accidental exposure of unprocessed film....which it seems was probably the case from your story....what camera were you shooting on? most film cameras have a two step process of opening the back.

I rarely pick up a camera though because I'm mostly directing.
Shooting is annoying unless I'm shooting for myself so I usually
just tell the intern my ideas and he gets 'em done.

Whenever I shoot now it's to try new techniques. Like the shit on my flickr.
It's all bullshit but whatever man. It's fun and fresh.

Right now I'm just scrounging around for enough money for my home studio

Hm, operation wise, no different from any other camera I suppose.

It's just kinda nice knowing you have absolutely no limit in size resolution so you can be sort of sloppy with setting up. Knowing that if you crop 2/5ths of an image you'll still be getting like a fucking 17 Megapixel image.

The real draw is the twelve stops of dynamic range.
Also, noiseless at ISO 50 to infinity. Even at a 300% crop. Images still very usable.

The program Capture One Pro is necessary to shoot with a camera like that.
And I must say, it's the best computer program I've used that has to do with photo.

Otherwise, digital medium format is slow. 1FPS whoooo.......

like if you're filming a tv commercial, and you're color correcting it, knowing that it's going to play on normal televisions...why use a crazy crt monitor? haha. my vocabulary rules.

Mostly on video or anything like that it's kinda irrelevant mostly because of what you had mentioned. On big budget movies I'm pretty sure there's a set standard for that kinda junk that gets played on movies so they'll have to replicate it as best as possible.

But color calibrated monitors only exist for the print. If you want you're reds on your screen to match the reds on the final PRINTED version on paper then you'd need calibrated software for your monitor and printer. Hence why there are RGB modes and CMYK modes for you to finely tweek your images. Also that's why DPPI and other shit exist. Arguably, it all loosely stitches together somehow.

It's kind of a bitch to do it. It isn't hard but there are snags sometimes and it's always a "what the fuck I'm not a digital technician" kinda problem.

From what I've seen though, the more expensive the color correction machine is, i.e. eye capture, the more automatic it is thus less of a headache.

i got a Spyder calibrator for like $60 on a whim like a year ago.... didn't think it did all that much at first, but now, when i wait too long between calibrations, i can totally tell. and when i use most other people's computers i'm WTF IS THIS SHIT. it's one of those things you don't really think you need until you have it, haha.

You can get away with not using one as im sure 98% of the people who shoot don't. Just ball park your colors and don't rape your saturation. The histogram in photoshop is very useful if you know how to read RGB.

At work with color calibrated monitors it doesn't look blown out.
At home on my uncalibrated mac screen it does.

So for those of you with calibrated monitors it shouldn't blown out.

I just color calibrated mine, and he still has no detail in his forehead its blown out. Either way I still think this picture is fucking badass.
