absolutely, utterly, b-e-a-utiful.

great job man, love the lighting, just fucking phenomenal.

here's some stuff i've been doing lately, got a job with a company doing the basics (weddings, sweet 16s, communions, etc.), to get me going in the photog field and get some money in my pocket so i can get some nice lenses, too.

if you want to say what's on your mind, don't act like a bitch and apologize prior to saying it, dick. furthermore, this being my second wedding, I have yet to test the limits/boundaries that I can take because: (1) people often want conservative, basic traditional photos and (2) my boss has a certain criteria for said photos. don't get my wrong, i know i have a lot of learning to do and much to improve on, but i dont care how, without explaining why, you say you think something sucks, you still sound like a dick.

I didn't burn or dodge the photo once actually. I used a little shadow highlight, and yeah it does have a weird feel to the picture, but i've always been a fan of real grimy looking photos. I never understood critiquing in photography, everyone shoots to make photos that reflect their style of photography. The reason photography is so great is because you can make it your own, some people love HDRS, some people love Film, some people love just shooting random ass shit with polaroids. Hate it or love it, I'm gonna shoot the way I wanna shoot, its working for me currently so I see no need to change it.

(I understand this is an endless rant, and its not just directed at you fast eddie)

woah, that's some of that magazine-quality shit.

someone needs to calm down with all of the dodging and burning, almost looks like a HDR, but not quite. :?

I'm done now.

care to explain that shot? How did you get that glow around the dudes head, and how many lights were used to even out the whole scene?

Some of it is a little much for my eyes, but I really like the direction you took that photo with. Do you have more, or plan to take more like that?

I used 3 flashes in that. I had one to the left of me shot through an umbrella, one to the right shot through an umbrella, then one directly behind him shot without an umbrella on full. I do plan on shooting more like this, and I also do a lot of post production with my photos.

is the $325 lens a fisheye, though? i have a shitty "adapter" that fucks everything up outside of the immediate center of focus. i guess i just need a lens that goes below f/3.5, a real trigger/slave system, 2 more flashes and another tripod. /crybabyfest

Doing intern work with a wedding photographer. He uses 4 lumedyne strobes, each one set at a specific location that enables beautiful fill lighting. on top of that i had my sb800 on camera set to iTTL. here's one with my fisheye, the best shot i took of the night (in my opinion)
question is, photoshopped ( gaussian blurred the background) or no photoshop
natural:
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/9994/wedding5.jpg
photoshopped:
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/160/wedding5photoshopped.jpg

not to sound like a dick but thats pretty sad if thats your best one of the day

kind of condescending and un-constructive?

Its obvious the guys learning, no need to be a total ass... Without meaning to butt in on the cat fight, a wedding isnt the sort of place where you should be learning to be honest.

basically yes, a wedding is not the place to be learing photography.

and to elaborate on my opinion of the photo:

waaaay to much fill light, the scene is so flat becasue theres so much light bouncing around all over the place. your flash and one flash on a lightstand would have been fine. you would need the extra flash becasue of the coverage of the flash and your (bad) lens choice. the flash in the background would be great to create some depth to the dance floor and a nice rim on the couple, but you loose the effect with multiple strobes. this is your photographers bad decision in using so many lights. ive seen a lot of "professional" photographers use multiple strobes on the dance floor and typically unless they actually shoot professional quality images the "proffessionals" just wash the whole scene out. that chandelere (spelled wrong) in the top left would have been nice to use with the photo, but the flashes overpower the nice warm orange light that it would output.

on to the lens. if you are going to use a fisheye thats fine, do it, it adds a different look to the package. but if your camera crops the hell out of the lens then keep it in the bag and use a super wide you would have been a lot better off. fisheyes are supposed to have extreme distortion, and using them on a crop body just dosent cut it. also if you had used a superwide it leaves you with the option to crop aswell.

on to this being your best photo of the night. i understand you are the second shooter at this wedding, but your best shot should not be a dance pic. a couple is not going to order a nice big wall print from you of them dancing, unless it a beautiful picture of the first dance. you have a lot of opportunity to be sneaking in awsome candids while the entire party is paying attention to the head phtographer, those should be some of your best photos of the day. if one of those is not your best photo, then you MUST get a great "formal picture". when i say formal pic, it dosent nessecarly have to be formal and boring looking as formal sounds, but in the time between the ceremony and the reception when you and the couple decide where to go for photos this is your time to shine and you gotta get a killer shot.

now a i realize that i completely overanalyzed this, but you asked why i didnt think it was a great shot. dont take my opinion as me saying dont take that picture, because it is a nice shot, but it had that potential to be a hell of a lot better

ps. if you had bounced your flash behind you, you would have gotten a lot more even lighting on both their faces.

Just flipped through the last few pages, I really dig the last three shots you posted, especially the last one.

If i had to nitpick, id say reduce your rim to about one stop higher than your key and fill lights. Its will make that halo deal not as harsh. Glad your doing your own thing though, it seems like most photogs take their photos to impress the people who will be critiquing them.

So simple.

One light, straight from the back, blasting white sheet of diffuser paper. (rollux 1+ if you needed to know)

A few color gels and things to cut it. Tape to stick it.

One tank of water.

Various food colorings for the color and smoke-like thing.

Tools (like straws, knives, forks, anything uniquely shaped to manipulate the food coloring)

Macro lens and something that will give a glow like a fog filter. You can even fog up your lens by blowing your stinky ass breath for condensation.

the rest of it is playing with it.

Yes at certain angles i catch some red eye, I think its b/c i don't have the moon unit "softbox for the ringflash" for those of you who don't know. Its weird though with the shoot i had with Dana no red eye at all, but the next day i shot another subject and every 10th photo there was some red eye. The light is a bit harsh i mean seriously all of my subjects complain about seeing rings for hours. My girlfriend grabbed the ringflash and popped a flash in my face and i would have to agree.

Just like any new toy its fun to use at first. Its a great add to my studio i would recommend it.

Drew, your recent photos look like HDR anyways. Ditch the shitty processing.

Oh, I shot this photo of my friend little brother smoking weed but he wont let me put it on the internet. He wont find it here...

Ignore what people are saying because right now that type of processing is getting alot of photographers big jobs with big companies. Dont put it all down to the processing aswell because that look is built off of mainly good lighting techniques. You might be interested in looking at the work of Tim Tadder http://www.timtadder.com/ if you havent already.

advertising and commercial work

its good, for what it is, but my personal taste it is not

its been done to death and everything just look's so cheap and digital, plus you should revisit some of the post work, there are areas that need to be darker, the back light is just a little to obvious, its good, just maybe drop the power, or using a snoot or barn doors to isolate the light so that the trees are not in the image, i like the motion blur on the hands though

agreed, not to diss on drew or anything( the boy's got undeniable skills) but the issue with hyper processed photos is that it's a trend, and they can get easily out of "fashion". keeping it more "natural" keeps the work timeless.
but yeah when you work for commercials and stuff you have no choice but to keep up with the trends.

Well recently i've landed a job in LA and I'm headed out there in August. The job involves shooting people in the music industry and luckily its only a few weekends out of the month, so I'm going to have a lot of free time and I plan on dabbling with the Fashion/Commercial industry when I get out there. This is why i've shot so many photos with the new processing as of recent, so i can expand my portfolio. At first I was iffy about the images and the processing but after shooting it more and more, I am falling in love with it. I plan on putting a new site up soon, with all new work, however on the site I will have a personal gallery of my own shit that has nothing to do with the commercial world.

Drew, if you are going to work in LA and want to get into the fashion game...you can't be relying on a portfolio that is consumed by over processed photos. Today, if you want to land serious work, the photo needs to be driven by the lighting and concept. The last thing a fashion art director/photo editor wants to see is a intense over stylized photo that makes the viewer think photoshop before camera work and takes away from what the clothing really looks like.

One of my art directors that I work with at Corbis images says she will not even look at anything unnatural looking these days. She has got on me to remove half the work on my website (www.jeremymccain.com) because it is making me "unmarketable". My site is many years old, and I need to remove most of the work on there because it is not even close to being on par. When I was doing that kind of work five years ago it was sellable because not allot of people were doing it..but now everyone can use sharpening, shadow/highlight, dodge/burn tools. This is the way that the industry is going...especially in fashion. Yes there are many exceptions (Tom Nagy, Tim Bret-Day), but art directors and photo editors are looking for images that are classic and timeless and not trendy because of the processing. You can even see this in Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott's newer work. They were the most controversial/trendy /most desirable photographers in the fashion world aside from Steven Meisel, Mario Testino and Steven Klein due to their stylized processing, but now they are having to evolve away from that because everyone has caught up to them and can mimic their processing.

You are even seeing this in the commercial world. Take a look at the new Lacoste ad campaigns...guess who they got to shoot them? Terry Richardson. He is the most un-stylized photographer and is all the rage right now....he is the hot shit. Advertisers constantly want something different, and right now, over processed photos are what you can get at Wal Mart. I think your images are great, and if you dropped the opacity of your processing to 5 to maybe 10 percent on top of your original image they would be great.

I do allot of work in LA and all over, and I know allot of people that are much more established than myself and this is what they are saying. Instead of processing your images, create a portfolio that is based on concept and in camera work..and when you retouch photos, make it only an accentuation of the original image, and not something that drives the image. I am nobody to criticize, and believe me I am not, I am just trying to lend my experiences and humble opinions that I have learned over time through allot of work with publications and research.

Much respect

well thank you Jeremy, I really do appreciate it. Luckily I am making enough at my one job and I have enough time where I don't need to depend on trying to score jobs in the field. These past couple images I've posted were simply experiments with that type of processing. Trust me if I could I would shoot everything without flashes but the guys I'm working for aren't looking for that type of work. I'd definitely like to get in touch with you when I get out there and start some networking.

So just as we were about to go street skating tonight is started to pis it down with rain after being so nice all day, so we ended up hitting the indoor park instead which we hadn't been to in ages because the weather has been so nice and it's shit.

I didn't even bother bringing my skates as i knew i didn't want to skate the shitty park and my original plan was to go and take photos anyway, so i stuck to that plan and shot a few photos at the park which is the most horrible place to shoot photos in my opinion but this is what i ended up with.
