thanks CZ and Harrison,

I used the Tokina 11-16 2.8 with a warming polarizer. I kept it parked on the camera most of the trip as I didn't have much room for extra lenses. The last one of the mountains was the 20-200 2.8 VR, also with the warming cir pol.

Its moderately sharp WFO, but is really fantastic between a 4 and 11. I'm almost always parked at 11 when using it. If I want anything tighter for landscape, I'd switch to my FE2 and a 20mm prime

Here is some photos I did for someone I work with. I have never done a "studio" style shot before and I don't have access to any flashes. I just used Tota lights from school and umbrellas.

Everything was shot with a 40D and a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM lens.

I know they are not perfect, but any advices on home studios work would be appreciated. I was having a hard time getting enough light out out of the Tota's. I had to up the ISO to 1000 just to get the exposure I wanted. I don't have access to photography lighting equipment, but I have access to film lights. I want to do this again, but with better results

dudes video camera completely ruined the shot. where was the main shooter in relation to you, im assuming pretty close, as its a pretty common angle to shoot. if this is the case, then your shot is useless (unless his/hers is complete shit) you two would have just about the same shot but yours has the bride blocket by the videographer. your job as an assistant (and this is how ive been driected and how i direct my assistants) is to complement the head photogrgaphers shot. he/she cant be in 2 places at once and its your job to be their second set of eyes. find a different angle, explore the scene more. he/she has the big wide sweeping scene of the bride tossing the flowers and hopefully the catch (nice timing on your part) so find something tight find, find a detail shot, find a completely different angle, something thats going to work in tandem with the main photographers shot for the couples book.

My friend came up to me asking me to take some headshots for him. He needed them for opera and other performance stuff. I have never done headshots before and I only had a 3-omni video lighting kit. I obviously wouldn't let him pay me for these.
If i had more time I would have made a large softbox or other soft light, and used some powder to de-shine his face. And I have no clue how to edit portraits in photoshop, but i tried.
What can I do to improve for the next run?

kmedia one quick thing you can do is to fix the catch lights in his eyes (this doesnt mean remove btw). Is that his outfit for the opera or whatever other performance he is doing? If not you should maybe get him back in something more neutral like a plain black or white crew neck, aswell as having a more neutral background white, gray, black etc. A clamshell lighting setup would work fairly well for an actors headshot (this is a clamshell set-up http://kipbeelmanphotography.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/clamshell_strobist.jpg) although if youre using hard light it might look abit too sinister with a light coming from underneath his face. In the first one he looks slightly pissed off or a little bit sour, to a casting guy he might not look all too fun to work with however if he is in character then i suppose he's doing a good job. The second image his arms are folded, no smile, shoulders slightly raised, this is closed body language and may not set a great impression in there minds again. Like I said Im unsure of whether this is his character or just him. Just some thoughts.

Thanks for posting that, I have been looking around to see how to do different lighting set ups on the net but some of them just don't explain it as well or whatever, maybe i am just an idiot. one question i have, maybe you can answer it, is how do you set up the lights properly for the so called "butterfly" effect?

kmedia one quick thing you can do is to fix the catch lights in his eyes (this doesnt mean remove btw).

Thanks alot man, it was a really rushed shoot, so I can probably get some diffusion umbrellas for next time. That's a really interesting way to do it. I wouldn't have thought to put the lights directly over each other.

And what are those things he's skating in this picture? It looks like it should be part of a skatepark
