I'm not a huge fan of that giant HDR stuff. It sort of hurts my eyes. I'd rather just see an over the top contrast photo.

But those were super sick man.

I lightened up the image. I wish I had hillsides like this around me... Between this and that skin job you did on Humphreys friend it's safe to say you need to take a class in photoshopz.

Baz if you want to work on technique some more you should set the camera up on a tripod, use a longer exposure and your aperture should probably be about F16 give or take a stop or 2. Also if you intend on shooting alot of landscapes invest in an ND grad filter, it'll make life 50 million times easier. In that pic youre exposing for the sky, if you were to expose for the ground your sky would be over exposed. The joy of an ND grad is you can expose for the ground and still have a properly exposed sky. Enjoy, blud.

ahh awesome thanks for the tip, im basically learning as i go along as my photo course for 6 weeks only taught me how my camera worked, not what i need to do for what i want to do.

But i was wanting to buy a remote for my shutter, but the problem is for the d60 they only have a wireless one, so i might start saving up for a higher spec camera in a bit.

thanks for the feedback Neil!

The Landscape photo of Bazodazo was edited with was Photomatix and it wasn't even edited. I place the image in Photomatrix it lighted up the photo and showed detail and that was that. The photo i edited that Humphrey's took wasn't even serious, No way i would of ever turned that into a client nor if i was in school for photo assignment.

The thing with Photoshop is a lot of photographers rely on it to make their photographs.I hardly ever use it. That doesn't mean i don't have respect for people use it. I just try to take photos as is.

I was joking haha, as for the second paragraph my view on the subject is that photoshop can enhance a good photo, average crappy ones out, you cant make a photo good with photoshop, it requires the properties already to allow you to just retouch and enhance. Normal color adjustments work a treat though, not into crazy layer techniques.

Thanks Drew, I wanted to, but I when I looked at it, I wasn't feeling the wide. Plus I really wanted to keep the dog in the shot and not make my Dad too small in the frame.

I never realized it until I spent so many years away from home, but my parents farm has some great places for photos. The garage is full of a ton of shit; old snowmobiles, old farm equipment, dirty tools, etc, its a pretty cool location. I'm sure I will be back in there sooner or later shooting something different.

Ryan, I would say that is constructive...sorry to say....

taking pictures of boring stuff= boring pictures

you normally won't find great subject matter by walking onto your mainstreet and framing up on a building. Do whatever you got to do to find interesting content, I'm not ansel adams but I know good photos take patience, conceptualization and sometimes driving to the middle of nowhere and hiking 20 miles ( at least for an aspiring landscape photographer) to get good stuff.

by all means, keep shooting and you will get better, just don't post stuff that has absolutely no subject matter or vision and expect people to give you pats on the back as opposed to a sobering critique

Honest critique:

Subject:
What is the significance of your subject? Is there a reason why you chose this corner?

For me, this doesn't look any different than something I would see downtown anywhere. So give me something to look at, and a reason to look at it. Maybe if a midget and a junkie showed up on this corner there would be some excitement. But there is no energy coming from this photo, nothing saying "LOOK AT ME". The building looks fairly new so I don't even sense any character from the building. Go find the shittiest, rundown brick building in your town and shoot that, not the most polished one that house's a store. Or find something new with some crazy architecture, something visually appealing to the eye.

Perspective:

For the sake of the argument, this street corner means alot to you. You scored an HJ from a girl in your class here, and you want to take a picture of this spot. This looks like you setup your tripod, snapped and walked away. Give us some angles to make it more visually appealing. Get low; roll in the dirt and aim it high. Get high; climb on top of a building nearby and shoot down. Show your audience this street corner like they've never seen it before.

Time of day:

Maybe a different time of day with more dramatic lighting would give us something to look at. You are shooting into the shade, flat boring shade. Maybe go earlier/later when the sun is giving it some form/shape. OR shoo it at night, maybe there are some street lights, and you can do a long exposure.

Not sure what else to say. Keep shooting. Keep posting.

wahwah booooooooring

Allow me to rephrase. We can start from what we see. A brick building, framed with the top cut off, standing next to a light pole, also top cut off, with an american flag attached to it. Behnind said shop, we see the facade of your middletown, everywhere, USA, a slight bit more blown out than your sea cliff shot. Also, we see a blank wall, in an area completely devoid of people. Looking at this photograph, it contains nothing unique about it, its simply flat, both the lighting, the frame and the subject matter. It has no pulse. Firstly, i think you need to consider your frame. Is there a reason you want to use this wall of brick and windows to effectively block us out from the rest of the picture? Is there a reason why you chose to photograph a fucking smidge of the roof rather than step back three feet and include the whole thing? Your lines are fine, i can't rag on that. If you haven't learned the zone system yet, i'd highly recommend you do so. Your contrast is boring and flat, as stated before. If you haven't encountered Stephen Shore yet, which i really hope you have, you should look him up, specifically his uncommon places work. I'm seeing your semiology of the street canyon, mysterious passageways undecipherable to the viewer, tied in with these angular blockages via the walls. As i said before, this is still boring. Hope this helped. Keep shooting.

yeah the transition is perfect but look at the run up.
its made out of little stones.
you have to skate next to them and then you have to jump right into the transition.
another problem was the security office that was right next to the spot, but the major of berlin was in this building to answer some questions so nobody was in the office.

fuckin amazing. can you share how you took that?

hey, thanks guys...

digitalfilmmaker, yeah, I love the 11-16. It is sharp as hell past a f4. My only issue is the flaring. With my polarizer I get this crazy flare pattern that looks terrible...

to answer your question, it was a long exposure. For this specific shot I stopped down all the way and bracketed my shutter over and under by one stop so I could give myself some options on shutterspeed as I wasn't just going for the smoothed over ocean look and wanted some detail in the water.

I also used a polarizer and some graduated neutral density to knock down the sky a bit.

heres another from the set with a longer shutter

My buddy and I both did similar lighting coincidentally. Strong backlight, directly behind a subject with smoke. The Photographer also had a flash (on his camera I believe) for fill. I wanted to compare them side by side to see the difference with motion blur and latitude.

I shot video in 720 24pn with my HVX200a and Letus adapter. ASA would be somewhere around 100 I guess and the photographer was rocking out a 7d. I do not know the settings he was shooting at.

Some recent bridal work i did. Photographed with a D700, sigma 70-200 2.8, nikon 28mm 2.8 AI, and sigma 14mm 2.8 , alienbee 800s, one with a large octabox, another bare reflector. Worked in photoshop. Any feedback?

I like this one a lot, but they all look amazing. good decision on the lighting set up as well, i want to try and get an octabox, they seem to produce a really soft and subtle light. good job man.

Ebay has some pretty inexpensive ones, where you can also buy the attachment ring as well. I do want to attach a grid to it to get better control of my light, and a boom to get hairlight on my second light, or just throw a speedlight up there with a mini soft box.

Haven't posted anything in a while so I thought I should.

Recently, I've been developing random rolls of lost film I find in my room. This one was from a trip to Flagstaff a few years ago. Shot with a Canon A-1, Kodak BW film with a red filter.

Stellar

Your title was cinematographer?

Period stuff adds an another level of difficulty, especially with 1/3 sensor digital cameras. Looks like it worked out bc of serious overcast. Your producer scheduled shoots around forecasts?

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/nickmicros/24_rough_master.jpg
This was rehearsal. The lighting changed a bit bc it was way too dramatic. Top left of frame got some added light. Refrigerator reflection was fixed and the light on the gold bar was cut down.

The paramount intro is incredible.... This photo is incredible.... And Panorama compositions create the best compositions. Wide screen makes so much more scenes than 4:3 or 4:5 frames. People eyes generally look left and right to scope anything out. Not up and down to the sky and ground. My rant.

The film is cool bc I get to do romantic french style. Like natural flat light and hand held for flashbacks and also clean lighting with lots of pop, zing to it. Also got to do some camera ticks.

Still only have 2 drops of footage. More to come after I met up with the director.

P.S

I got food poisoning the night before the first shoot. The location fell through on half of the first day bc of double booking. There was only 2 ppl in the entire camera, electrical and lighting departments, including me. One of the 2k lights we were to have had a bunk bulb. But worst of all I dropped my fucking camera rig and have about 900$ in damages. Talkin about curve balls. Think I got hit by 20 of them in 4 days.

Hey Ivan,

glad you like my work, and that I could be of some inspiration to you. There's really no better feeling then backpacking to the middle of nowhere to do photography. You are truly at the mercy of the elements and no matter how good you are, your shots can only be as good as the weather and light that you are dealt by the higher powers that be. I literally sat down for 8 hours to wait for the light to be right and the clouds to roll in for the previous shot, I was rained on, hailed on , snowed on but alas, it was worth it.
nothing beats this kind of solitude...
