Some photos from Fast Friday at the Indianapolis 500. I know next to nothing about racing, but I had pit access for an hour for a work related event in one of the luxury suites overlooking the track and finish line.

I was stuck with only a 55-200mm 3.5-5.6 lens on my D300, otherwise I could have had more fun in the pits.

Slightly vague haha, what effect? In the middle picture I had a slow shutter speed and panned across with the car as it went past, I'm kind of able to use the picture because I've got the front lights/bonnet sharp and in focus and because it's new out/ a 2012 model Im able to get away with blurring out alot of the car; makes it more of a teaser.

Look for a Canon rebel. Cheap and paired with a decent lens you will get remarkable images. I started out with the Rebel xt which if you can find on Craigslist, they usually list for 150$-200

Thanks man. If that's the 350D, I was looking at one of those. They're still selling for way above that here in the UK, around £250. Would you say that's still worth it? I don't need huge megapixel numbers, as I won't be printing massive photos. And as you said, with a good lens, these things are reported to be amazing. There's a group for 350d users on Flickr, think i'll have a look through them.

Yes the 350D is the one, and the price doesn't sound bad.. but when it comes to buying lenses put your stock into PRIMES (fixed length) like S. said a 50mm 1.8 is great for starters! and a perfect portrait would be a 85mm and of course when you want to shoot action you would want a wide 20mm or even a 15mm.

Nikon or Canon pretty good camera's just a matter of your preference and what is comfortable to you. I prefer Canon because I am familiar with their controls and LOVE the L series lens line-up.

P.s. Far as prints, I was able to get away with printing a 18x24 print with next to no resolution drop. perfect starter camera.

Zim, you need to work on getting better with contrast and exposure. Look at Drew Amato's B&W photos and compare them to your photos. Your shots are under exposed about a stop to a stop and a half, and the contrast is muddy.

In addition to shooting with the correct f/stop, ISO and shutter speed settings you should take a look at Adobe Lightroom 2 or 3 as an alternative to using Photoshop for the editing. You have much better control over the images, especially if you shoot RAW. Not suggesting you should shoot RAW for fuck around shots, but you'd be surprised how much more latitude you have in saving a blown shot.

You can always move the images to Photoshop for more intensive manipulation, but you should really be using Lightroom first. Here's a handy link for when you get a copy of the software: http://photo.tutsplus.com/tutorials/post-processing/learn-lightroom-in-a-week-day-1-workspace-and-preferences/

Zim, in a black and white photograph there needs to be three things. True black, true white, and various depths of grey. In all your shots on this page you are missing one of those three. Im not hating, but I guess offering constructive criticism. Not to be this guy - but Ansel Adams isn't famous because he was a good landscape photographer, but rather what he contributed to the nature of black and white photography. Read his book. Don't just skim through it either.

When you do that you'll understand CMYK, the histogram and ultimately how to use curves/levels, and color accuracy in printing.

Your camera meters in grey. Not in black/white/color.

I received my 20d yesterday and took a few photo's with it at the park. Unfortunately the lens was damaged in transit. The manual/af button snapped off, therefore it was stuck in manual, and would not focus past 1.5m. I don't think the photo's are too bad considering this fact. The lens was a (busted) 35-70mm 4.5-5.6. Camera is great, love the weight and feel. Not too heavy on the neck either. I now have an 18-55 and 28-90 on order. Here is my album from the recently visited Flying Legends airshow, at Duxford airfield in Cambridge, England.

The 28-80mm served its purpose better than expected (which was to photograph static aircrafts), but performed miserably for in-flights. I shall purchase a long-range lens before my next airshow - probably an 80-200 or better - any recommendations?

You should change your in-camera settings to bump up the vibrancy and contrast.

I took down the white balance by 100 degrees, increased the contrast, bumped up the vibrancy just a bit, reduced the clarity a tiny bit and dodged her face by .62 EV. Took about 30 seconds in Lightroom.

Nice edit - you've really made her stand out in the picture (not easy to achieve, with a spitfire in the background)! Interestingly, I actually chose not to edit the colours in that photo, because i liked the natural look of them - but i think you've both made me realise that a few little changes could have improved a photo which had lots of potential.

Your edit increased the shadows in her eyes making her look like she hasn't slept in a few days. She's a pretty woman, not a dirty mechanic. Unless the shot is for a newspaper or something, it's OK to subtly accentuate a woman's natural beauty by toning down shadows around her eyes.

Moving the Clarity slider to the right when working with photos of women isn't very complimentary. I generally keep it at -5 to -15 unless there is a lot going on in the photo, then I'll just use the Clarity brush.

You never know when you're gonna forget setting the correct white balance or shoot at a wrong exposure.
With raw you can maybe recover a valuable memory.

I understand that, but white balance and exposure can also be corrected in .jpegs in Photoshop and Lightroom, as well. Not to the exact same degree, granted, but it can still be done.

I do shoot RAW on the weekends because i need the latitude that format provides, but when I'm out taking pictures of my wife and son or the occasional skate photo, I just think it's overkill.

I'd rather always shoot RAW, except sequences because my camera is too slow, and really a few situations where I'd want JPEG. Even if you want to save time and not individually process every image, it's still better to keep as much data as possible and have Photoshop's Image Processor (or whatever else you are using) handle the sharpness/contrast etc.- it's better to take one pic from the set and make an action appropriate for the lighting conditions etc. during the particular shoot, and process all the images from that shoot with that action.

Ok, here's a few photo's I took tonight, at around 23:00, at a local railway footbridge. Not bad for a first attempt at night shots, i think.

All were taken with a 20d, 28-80mm lens set on a tripod with 10 second timer. Settings floated between:

5 and 15 seconds shutter speed, but most were 10 seconds
3.5 and 18.0 aperture

but to me wedding shots need to concentrate on the couple, one shots really concentrates on the large building that is pretty irrelevant whilst the couple themselves fade into the landscape. Not to hate or anything but maybe next time make sure to not let creativity get in the way of the job you're getting paid to do a little...Only my point of view though.

Thanks for the input, but those were two photos out of 700 that I shot. I have plenty of traditional photos of this couple, and I have a reason for posting the ones I did; my boss doesn't want me posting clear shots of our clients faces online without his watermark on the photo anymore, and I don't want to post watermarked photos on here.

The couple wanted creative shots thrown in the mix (these were the two that I liked the most) and were excited about the building shot after I told them about the location (which is just outside of my office). They live in a really small town and have always wanted to live in the big city, but find it too busy.

I was paid to give them exactly what they wanted, and they were very, very happy with the results. They even sent me a very nice thank you card in the mail.

They told me that they had this final version of the building shot printed poster size:

I might actually be doing a wedding myself next month, asked my friend to come along as a second photographer and moral support, any tips?

No worries, I wasn't offended or anything.

Tips..tips...oh man, there's so much that could be said, but it's hard without knowing what your equipment setup will be like.

Talk to the couple, see if they have any locations they want to shoot at. Feel out their personalities, it will help you figure out how easy or hard it will be to direct them. This is best done BEFORE the date of the wedding, if possible.

Have your buddy get the candid shots with a long lens if you'll be the lead photographer. More often than not, the candid shots are the best shots because they look more natural than the posed shots when the couple is looking at the camera.

When you're setting up a shot, get your settings straight in Manual mode, but also have back up settings set up in Aperture Priority mode, as well. Especially if you're outside with clouds shifting every couple seconds. I always shoot in AP mode during outdoor weddings. It's saved my ass a few times.

Direct sunlight is your enemy. It makes people squint, and sunlight directly overhead casts shadows over peoples eye sockets. It's especially terrible on white wedding dresses, so much detail is lost by getting overexposed. Women can and will complain that the beauty and detail of their dress was lost in the shot. You want to shoot in the shade as much as possible for the most even lighting. Obviously, you can't always do this. If you have to shoot in direct sunlight, try to get the couple's backs to the sun and use a fill flash.

Try not to use your flash when people are close to walls, it casts too harsh of shadows. Bounce that motherfucker off walls and ceilings whenever possible. During receptions, my flash head is always pointing straight up with the white card sticking out.

I always shoot the reception at around 800-1200 ISO, with flash at 1/2 to 3/4 power, because of the low ambient light. I shoot at the same ISO range if the ceremony is indoors with very little light, but never use a flash as it disturbs the ceremony. That part is up the the church/venue's policy and the couple's wishes. Some may not care about the flash, but I haven't been in a situation where is was OK to use a flash during the actual ceremony.

If you are in front of the couple when they are walking towards you down the aisle, etc., set your aperture at least to f/5, if not f/5.6 or higher. That will give you some leeway if the bride or groom steps out of the range of focus you would have had if you had set the aperture to say, f/3.2 or f/3.

For group shots, never go lower than f/5. If you do, and check the camera's LCD screen, you won't notice it. But you will see it in post-production, the radiating loss of focus on those that are outside of the focus range. Not really noticeable for small prints, but try to consider that they might use any and all of your photos for large prints.

When posing the couple, remind them to be close, intimate. You'd be surprised, some couples are timid or nervous and forget to be themselves. Remind them to kiss, slowly, and to touch hands, touch each other's face, run fingers through hair. All that sappy stuff that turns out great in wedding photos. it kinda feels like you're directing some soft core porn :lol:

I try to shoot the bride/bride's face at f/2.8 or f/3.2 with as low of an ISO as possible when in natural light, for non-ceremony shots. Also, for candid shots with a long lens.

If you ever change your lens to Manual mode, make fucking sure that you change it back as soon as possible. Things will move at such a fast pace that you won't realize why AF isn't working and the AF/M button on the lens is always the last to be checked :lol:


I gotta go for now, but if you have anymore questions, ask away. I've shot 11 weddings this year so far, so I am not any kind of authority, but my boss is a great teacher and I spend about 12 hours per week with him. So everything I am learning, is fresh in my mind.

I'm jealous. Definitely picking up one eventually. My photo teacher has an 80-200 that I can borrow in the meantime.

I'm used to shooting with Canon's IS, but this thing is pretty quick for an older lens and the image quality looks great on my D300. It's heavy as shit, too, but really durable looking.

this is at a lake in texas. i go here to blow of steam, relax, smoke, whatever. I took these at 10pm tonight with long shutter speeds and relatively low ISO speeds.
