and for zim, what is with those silly crops. looks like screen grabs from a movie type shoot... and those are obviously pictures. pictures should more or less follow a print size pattern otherwise it just looks fucking weird. don't do weird crops they teach you that in highschool.

No dude, that looks really bad for several reasons:
1, You took an attractive girl and made her unattractive
2. You are using an HDR technique incorrectly in at least 3 different ways
3. You are not using the correct lighting techniques for those shots
4. You are a monkey with a goddamn camera :lol:
Instead of experimenting so much, why don't you try learning the proper way to do things? Watch some tutorials online at the very least if you don't have access to a professional photographer to pick his/her brain and learn from.
Sometimes it's funny to see your work posted here, but in this case since you seem proud of these shots, it makes me sad that there are people out there (you especially) that don't have a fucking clue about the tools they are using to capture moments in time, yet they seem so fucking cocksure that the are producing, decent, even revolutionary shit.
If I could smack you over the head with a rolled up magazine and shout "NO!" at you right now, I would :lol:

and zim, seriously what the fuck is that shit. sometimes a photo is just a photo. good photos are good on its own not after it's been run through an editing program. have you ever shot with a non digital film slr? cause if you tried the same shit you're entire roll would be black.

I shoot solo and yes, all by refferal. I try to promote myself on Facebook a bit and I have to get a website done.
I just shoot and edit. Doing the album work seems like a lot of work for not too much extra money.
People are pretty cheap here.

I just shot my last wedding for the season this past Saturday, and I don't have another one until the end of March 2012. Kinda sad, but at least I get my Saturdays back.
I'd really like to see to see your photo project when it's done, hopefully you can finish it sooner than you've stated. The last photo you posted reminds me of Kid from Kid 'n Play.
I'm stoked that I just snagged a Nikon 24mm 2.8 AF D on eBay for under $200. I couldn't find a decent one for under $300 until tonight, so I jumped on it.
Also, I was running a photo booth and taking photos for Bacardi at a liquor trade show today, and only felt comfortable taking photos of people that asked me to. Here are two that I can share:

The girl in the middle of the bottom photo owns her own modeling agency and liked my photos, so hopefully she will be a good networking contact. She mentioned something about trying to get a calendar of her best girls put together before Christmas, so who knows.
I was given a free bottle of Bacardi Oakheart rum while I was packing up my equipment, which made up for the fact that I ripped the crotch out of my pants while kneeling :lol: It was really fun trying to get out of the place without flashing everyone, but I managed.

How long do Romanian receptions last? My Polish wedding reception lasted 11 or 12 hours, and then there was an 8 hour repeat the next day. It was fucking crazy :lol:
Receptions are almost always over by midnight in the US, and usually start at 6 pm or later.

Nah, no custom presets. I just work them on the go and see what feels better for the pics.
Receptions usually start at 8-9pm and last until 5-6am. It's pretty exhausting but I usually just make friends with everybody there and get drunk with them.

What bothers me is the complete disregard for body parts - you just seem to crop or cut wherever without noticing or thinking why, or should I? There are also exposure and colour/tone issues.

The flash hanging off the improvised boom stand is a Vivitar 285 HV with a slave cell; the left softbox umbella has a Nikon SB80 DX in slave mode and in the right umbrella there's a Canon 580EX II triggered by a Pocket Wizard Plus II.
I have no idea what the exact name of the stands was but they were 20-25$ each. The "boom" stand is actually a reflector holder arm on a regular stand and the Vivitar is hanging off it with a clamp.

I work directly with the owner, and it's just us two.
He hires an assistant for the day for me and one for him if we aren't shooting the same wedding. That would be awesome if you wanted to come out, but I don't know how the work stuff would work out. People book anywhere from a year to a few months in advance.
If you'd like to continue this via PMs, I'm sure I could pass along your contact information to my boss. We turn down bookings when each of us have the same dates booked, and that's wasted revenue because we don't have a 3rd lead.

Like I've said before, I work with a seasoned pro who has been doing this since the late 80s. He's a great teacher, and pushes me to do well. I'm learning stuff that they don't teach in school, plus I get almost instant feedback on where I fucked up and how to correct it.

Zim, how can you shoot in natural light, and the tones come out so badly? You say there was no sunlight? Even if it was raining, cloudy days (and shade) are the best for shooting people. No one squints their eyes, there's no light from above casting shadows in peoples eye sockets.
You get nice, even lighting on faces. If it's raining, get under some cover, have your back to the light have the subject face you. That's what I did with the shot of my son above, we were indoors and my back was to the natural light coming in from outside.
Turn the ISO to the lowest setting (100-200), open the aperture wide as it'll go (3.5, 3.2 or 2.8 if your lens can do it), get right in the face of the subject and dial up the shutter speed until the shot is exposed correctly in the view finder's exposure meter (#12 below). Take a photo, look at it in the LCD screen, and adjust your shutter speed if it's not bright enough, or if it's overexposed.

Step back, compose the shot as you want it, then fire away. If you want more of the background/foreground to be sharper, up the ISO, put the aperture at 4.0-5.6 and re-adjust the shutter speed to get the exposure right.
You are over-processing your photos to the point that they are getting ruined.
PM me your email address, and I'll send you a set of Lightroom presets that should help you in the editing phase. You still have to adjust the white balance, crop and spot fix as you see fit.
But, know that it's not going to fix the fact that you are not getting the shot right to begin with. Like Dave said earlier, you should not have to spend much time editing a shot. The less processing, the better.

Zim. Why do you have to run your photos through an editing program. You need to completely stop doing that if you want them to keep any integrity. Usually some minor retouching is nice but in your case you seem can't seem to understand where how much is too much.

Eh, here's some of the shots that I liked that haven't been edited yet. I OBVIOUSLY wasn't the main guy just an assistant but yeah... I realized that there is a lot of time spent sitting around doing nothing which was annoying. Got paid right on the spot which was very nice for a change.

When the bride & groom aren't doing anything, I'm sniping candids of the guests with a 70-200 2.8. Generally, the more photos you can sell to not only the bride, groom & immediate family, but also the guests, via an online gallery, the better.
It not only leads to more print sales, but also the guests might remember the great photos from so-and-so's wedding and refer the photographers to friends and family.
We get a ton of referrals like that.

Post the original, unedited version of that shot you just posted, please.
Also, set your in-camera saturation settings to +2, and try not to go above +20 Vibrance in Lightroom's Presence settings. And leave the Saturation slider alone in Lightroom's Presence settings. If you need to emphasize (or de-emphasize) a specific color, do it in the HSL settings, under Saturation or Luminance.

I think i've found your problem, Zim. Not that it wasn't obvious anyway but you lack the fundamentals of exposure, in the processed image you wanted to regain back your dark clouds and dark background to try and give your photo some "mood" but the fact is you set it up wrong. You should have shot the clouds and background darker to begin with, if that meant your subject was under then you could have used flash, brought her out in post or found a happy medium and exposed the scene correctly. Then you would only have to use mild retouching to get the effect you want.
You exposed out your background by having an ISO of 2500 and blew out the clouds . In an attempt to get back some mood you made the image flat, blitzkrieging that bitches skin tones. If you want to shoot like it's an overcast day then do it in-camera and don't try and recreate it in post.
I'm really not familiar with 2010 and 2011 model cameras but ISO2500 is a setting I wouldnt think about using until it was pretty fucking dark.

I'll assume that you don't understand what ISO is or it's functionality. It's basically setting the camera's sensor (film) to be more or less sensitive to light. The lower the number, the less sensitive to light but more detail is retained. The larger the number, the more sensitive to light, but more noise or grain is visible, especially in shadows.
I'll just add that high ISO can be used effectively in certain situations or with certain subjects. There's no harm in experimenting, but best not to if you plan to share the photos online or with anyone.

Yes, I manually expose my shots. Even if he was using TV mode, you can still see the exposure meter through the view finder. It's there for a reason, and it's a really bad habit to ignore it.

You don't take bad photos Zim you're just "tone deaf", they're these ugly muddy tones...you take pictures of bitches in San Fran holding balloons on fire escapes and doing other random shit so the whole point is to compliment their appearance. Your photoshop work does the opposite and masks any qualities your shot do have. There's nothing wrong with experimenting, the last bulk of work I did my lighting technique was refined by taking a photo of a shoe on my bedroom floor and a palm leaf in my garden...I spent all of last night taking awful looking photos of a coke bottle to see what would happen when I applied different gels to my light under certain settings...this stuff will never see the light of day but when I have a subject worth the be-fag photo thread or my portfolio I make sure that isn't the time Im making mistakes or experimenting toooo much.
With that said can we please now bury the Zim intervention, I come in here once a week or so to see some sweet photography by fruitbooters not Vince and Dave schooling Zimothy on photos of his new girlfriend....it's like the VG Rootz of this sub-forum.

These new cameras can do it breh. You can also set auto iso, but up to a specified amount. Useful in some situations, just gotta know what the hell you are doing.

Zim when you get here bring your camera. I'll give you a quick schooling on exposure and make sure you fucking leave New York completely understanding this shit. Don't give up because you've been doing better since your very first images. You're subjects got more interesting but composition and exposure leave a lot to be desired. My buddy Matt came home from the D.C. area for Thanksgiving, this is my first ever shot using my D300 in Commander mode with my SB600.

The flash was camera right on the other side of the quarter, the on-camera flash couldn't even get to the SB600s sensor, I don't know how it fired, but it did :D

Sharky, I highly recommend not putting your work up on Facebook. Once you upload an image to that site, you bind into an agreement which entitles Facebook into pretty much owning any and all images uploaded to it. So if you are using any of that commercially, I'd take it down. I never post any of my images on Facebook, but rather link them to either my blog or flickr account.

Your indifference just proves that you don't care about learning the fundamentals of photography. You took that shot @ ISO 2500 at 1/800, but FUCKING WHY? You could have shot that with a much lower ISO, shutter speed and with a wider aperture to soften the distracting background (you used f/5) to get a much better shot, but no, you crank that fucking camera up to a completely unnecessary ISO because YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

Zim, you know don't be too quick to defend yourself and really look at this. Luckily we are a bunch of nameless faces on an internet message board but if you just took a few days of your life to really reevaluate your work and ethics then you wouldn't receive such harsh crit. Fast edit actually shoots weddings professionally and it's a blessing to have such peers with things in common with you (i.e. rollerblading/photography) who more or less understands your trials and tribulations and CAN offer his advice. A lot of us jest and poke fun at your shit at the beginning but the last few weeks most of us were seriously trying to help you improve don't be too quick to write it off. Believe me there were some straight shifty ass photography posted in this thread, I personally hate lui's shit but at least his photos look halfway decent even if they are lacking substance, he knows his technical shit so his stuff can come off as photography.
Shooting at 25K iso is retarded no matter what type of lighting you have. I wouldn't even go above 800 in a dark room thats why there's flashes and junk and incremental shutter speeds are fucking stupid too.
B 1 2 4 8 15 30 60 125 250 500 1000 2000 and sometimes 4000 8000 - all that really counts.
50 100 200 400 600 800 1600 - any other iso number like 125 is make believe especially in digital because it's camera compensation which leads to artifacts and other pixel problems. right off the bat reading your settings point out that you've never shot a film camera which instantly proves you know little about exposure.
In skating (which I'm assuming you skate) do you know how much easier doing top souls are after mastering the basic soul grinds? It's the same shit. Your photography is like those kids who could do 360 top souls but cannot drop in a skatepark or roll backwards.
why do I care? cause when i see great shit from the likes of NHRB then 5 consecutive post about you defending your photography it's jaw dropping. no one is hating but it's ridiculous.

Zim, you know don't be too quick to defend yourself and really look at this. Luckily we are a bunch of nameless faces on an internet message board but if you just took a few days of your life to really reevaluate your work and ethics then you wouldn't receive such harsh crit. Fast edit actually shoots weddings professionally and it's a blessing to have such peers with things in common with you (i.e. rollerblading/photography) who more or less understands your trials and tribulations and CAN offer his advice. A lot of us jest and poke fun at your shit at the beginning but the last few weeks most of us were seriously trying to help you improve don't be too quick to write it off. Believe me there were some straight shifty ass photography posted in this thread, I personally hate lui's shit but at least his photos look halfway decent even if they are lacking substance, he knows his technical shit so his stuff can come off as photography.

I helped you with Lightroom presets because I thought they would help you understand what you need to do to be better with the camera. You can learn a lot about what you are doing wrong during the editing process. If you don't realize that, then you're defeating the purpose of learning with every photo you take.

My station in life ain't bad. Nobody is paying my way, everything I've built for myself was done with hard work, determination and a hell of a lot of insecurity.
I've experienced success due to the appreciation of learning how to better myself and my skill set. I know that I come across as cocky on this part of the forum, but you have to have a certain level of cockiness; project confidence and you will be perceived as confident.
I second guessed my work for a long time, but the proof is in the results of all the time I've spent working closely with a professional photographer for the last 6-7 months, coupled with the knowledge and experience I've Hockney'd together over the last 14 years.
Someone gives you advice and you either dismiss it straightaway, or seemingly take the advice and ignore it by posting an even worse example of your inability to understand the advice. You are projecting arrogance and being perceived as arrogant.
If I had that attitude with the guy investing his time and money to teach me what it takes to succeed in the photography business, I would have been out on my ass within days.
I tried being nice to you in the beginning, and thought I really was helping you with those Lightroom presets, but you just use them as a crutch to mask over your shoddy work.

You were featured in several articles in hometown media outlets, "Oh, I'm such an instinctual photographer, blah blah blah." I think that quote of yours that was in that article I posted above pissed me off the most. You come back on here saying "location shot for my next project, photo series/ short film" like we are supposed to give you props on a crap photo.

You really start to see the benefit of the IS capabilities of a lens, especially the L series lenses, when you get above the 70mm range. Shooting in really poor light at 1/20, 2.8, ISO 800 at 200mm is pretty awesome.
I had to shoot a wedding with incredibly poor lighting, and from a particular vantage point I was using a non-IS 135mm f/2 L lens, on a crop sensor 40D with no tripod...I had to breathe like a sniper. Shit was very stressful, but the shots came out pretty good. Nothing was blurry.

You are spot on. Shooting without IS is really tactical.
The IS really does help a lot. (Even with the short kit lens, can't imagine how helpful it would be on a long lens.)

It's an old building the some guys set up as a hotel, restaurant/bar, wine cellar/art gallery and office/conference spaces for rent. Pretty awesome.
Excellent series sharky. Really great use of lighting.

Seeing as this thread has gone to shit with sticking strictly to posting work.... I though it wouldn't hurt for me to toot my own horn. Just found out I have been given a business grant as well as business mentoring to the tune of $10k. This should help give me some loot to get a couple portfolios printed, various business shit, quoting software, travel expenses etc. Means I can now spend my personal loot on upgrading my camera gear...:)
