I know the composition is pretty shitty in this photo, because I had to get the sky to boost the shutter speed, I also didnt have any flashes at the time.

dude, what did you do with your maskholders? or is the paper?
MattCrssngr
15.12.2004, 21:09
Haha yeah it looks crazy like that because I forgot to bend the paper flat so the mask appears to be skinny in the center.

MattCrssngr

Nope, they are about 2 months old and tibbets was uncapped by Kawika but then after a couple weeks of people skating them, they ended up getting capped once again:(

i think the torque one would be hot hot shit if he was right at the end of the ledge, it looks like it would be great as a magazine spread. i'd like it better if he was standing up a little bit more on the torque, but that's not your deal.
good shots.

i really like what i have seen of your stuff. but in photos 2 and 4 you can see your shadow. you never wanna let the audience see you in the photo. it pulls the eye awy from the skater. which should always be the focus. the first photo is really cool. i like how you let it known that the skater is jumping over the dirt landing or at least thats what i thought he was doing never the less it is a good photograph.
keep it up

why do people hang art on the wall with a frame?

matting, framing, ect. for the look. to make it look complete.
julyknive
04.02.2005, 20:04
why do people hang art on the wall with a frame?
you should tell me
harrison
05.02.2005, 00:10
i think photos that have a lot of light colors that are close to white or the background color, that are posted on this message board, need some sort of darker color border to keep the light colors from washing out into the background or something like that. i dont know it makes sense to me.
Micah Barrett
05.02.2005, 07:21
i'm more apt to a 1 or 2 pixel border to keep it contained. anything thicker than that looks gross. people frame art to contain it and to integrate it with their furniture and their room. the same strategy doesn't really hold true for a message board.
andrew cleary
05.02.2005, 12:05
you should tell me
i did. you are an idiot. people frame art because it looks better than canvas on the wall. the frame is the finishing touch that makes the art look complete. makes it look nice.
thank you harrison for having a brain
even thought it doesnt matter what one person thinks, i posted the photo because i feel it is a nice photo. that is my art and how i want it to look.

ok no offense but would you take off your fucking fisheye...every photo ive seen from you has been fisheye
MattCrssngr
11.02.2005, 18:58
No offense taken.
I have been using fisheye in all my shots lately because I have shit radio slaves that you cant get more than 10 feet away from most of the time... Telephoto shots without a flash don’t come out quite as nicely as you might expect when it’s a cloudy day or shadows on the skater. I’m trying to make $350 so I can buy decent radio slaves... so until then, almost every shot I take will be fisheye.
Yesterday was sunny! and we were skating a park so I pulled out my 50mm and got this shot...

That one looks better cropped. I originally didn't crop it but I wasn't feeling it. I have another image, similar angle where I didn't drag the shutter, I turned it black and white, and I didn't crop it that looks really cool. The band is probably gonna use it for a gigi poster it looks cool...maybe I'll post it...
I always look at alot of magazines so I might have heard of Scratch magazine, what kind of mag is it?

the vector of the picture would only look good cause the picture is good.
when i look at the top half of the picture really quick, it almost looks vectored already. i'm just saying i think it might look just a good as the picture if not better if done really well. i would do it myself but i'm still pretty new to illustrator and i don't think i would be able to make it look that great.

That's a dope trick by Otis. One thing I noticed about the shot other than the blown out stairs, is that you're relying on your flash alittle too much during the day (your night shots are awesome tho). Something that I've learned is if you've gotta shoot with one flash, try to shoot at ambient as much as possible to expose the stairs and rail, turn down the power on the flash to mix with the ambient, and possition the flash to fill in the shadows that the sun produce on the skater. A good key to remember is light the subject, then the obsticle. The shadows produced from the flash and behind the skater in that image are alittle dark and it's hard to light up a spot completely like that with just one flash.
What iso do you usually shoot for a shot like this? How's the noise of the D70 at iso 400?

Thanks for critiquing that photo, you pointed out some things I didnt consider while shooting.
I actually own the canon 300d, and I'm always shooting at iso 100 because I'm really disappointed by the quality of anything over that with this camera... I might try shooting some iso 400 soon and see how they look because I'm sure it would help while trying to expose to the ambient and still having a fast enough shutter to freeze the skater with my flash. thanks again...

My bad, for some reason I thought you shot with the D70. You shouldn't really have a problem shooting at 400 iso. I shoot my 1D at all kinds of different iso's. If the noise is that bad you can convert the image to b&w. For examle, here's a shot that I took at iso 3200 with an on camera 550ex flash dialed all the way down.
http://gallery.photo.net/photo/3149871-lg.jpg
This is just one frame from a sequence, and because I was shooting at 8fps with the flash power all the way down I had to shoot at 1/1000 f2.8 at iso3200 just to get enough exposure and still freeze him without motion blur. As you can see the ledge was in the shade so I couldn't rely on the sun to help my exposure, and flashes don't recycle fast enough at higher powers to be able to shoot at 8fps. The image's colors were horrible at that iso so I converted them to b&w and added some contrast so the blacks would be true black. Sometimes it's not about getting the prettiest image but rather capturing it to the best of your camera and your abilities.
do you use the camera's light meter? What kind of flash do you use? Do you shoot the camera in manual?

The noise looks pretty much like film grain in that pic so it looks pretty good. That b&w conversion trick seems to work well, thanks for the tip. Could your flash keep up with the sequences with an external battery pack? I think sunpak makes one but not sure.
I use the light meter on my camera for all my shots. I'll probably think about buying a flash meter once I get more flashes just to keep things simple. I use the Sunpak 383 and I'm always shooting with the flash in manual mode and my camera in manual mode.
Few pictures that I took of my friend's band, at one of the shows they were in.
