What colour profile should I set my screen to, to edit pictures in "true" colour??
And What advice have you guys got for wedding photography as someone wants me to shoot their wedding in August and I want to be prepared. I will hopefully get wedding photography work experience before this.

Best advice I can offer is for you to find a wedding photographer that will let you be his assistant/2nd shooter, and you ask lots of questions about equipment and technique on directional skills for posing and creative shooting.

As for your monitor, I use this website to calibrate mine: http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html as well as the built-in calibration tools in Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I've checked my images on my iMac at work, and my iPad, and it's all perfect.

That's pretty much it. Haven't really even taken any pictures this year but I recently found out there's a photo printing place right around the corner of my job that does slide processing! So I bought a few rolls of portra to shoot since photography is more of a hobby to me now.

I got too drunk to drive somewhere where I could compose a shot with a building or skyline in the shot to show the size of this stupidly bright moon. Taken minutes after it turned into a full moon in Indianapolis, IN.

Ran out into a cornfield today before sunset. Seemed like it was going to rain so I didn't want to head very far, stayed near the edges and shot some corn porn. Also, squares are fun.

Also also: I bought a camera because I figured I should shoot my own reference photos to work from, but I'm actually enjoying taking the photos quite a bit. Hopefully as my photography improves my artwork improves with it.

Traumatized my kid at the barber on Sunday. Poor guy freaked out so bad that it became impossible to even out the rough spots, so he has a few patches that are way shorter than the surrounding hair and his bangs are way crooked

Zim your work ethics hurt my heart.

I don't know how it is for the rest of you but I have to use whatever meager salary I earn from photo to take care of my family. I also have a second job at a sandwich job for other expenses.

You posting a stupid hipstamatic type photo for whatever reason pisses all over the love I have for photography.

Congrats on your $100 an hour dude, I promise it won't last long. If its a 10 hour job your only getting $1000.

Weddings can be both fun and frustrating. Doing them sporadically isn't a good way to get used to them. I shot my 37th wedding last weekend, and I started shooting weddings last April. I learn to anticipate potential problems that arise every time I shoot. I'm still learning, but I still really enjoy what I do.

Since its not my main source of income, I don't mind pulling $100/hr for weddings. If I was doing it on my own, I'd be charging $350/hr like my bos does. Within two years, I'll start my own gig and settle in the $6500 - $7500 range for upper tier packages.

I share your love for photography, dave. Its all i think about now, more than skating and design for sure. I have more photos I'll be uploading soon. Want to pm me a link to some of your recent work, Dave?

Meanwhile, Alan's AIDs will hopefully start to shut down his immune system and a common cold will kill him slowly.

We can only hope.

What I hate is when I tell the bridal party to not run down the aisle, but take their time immediately after the ceremony, and they forget and I can't get the shots i wanted. Or when the bride and groom give a quick peck on the lips and that's it, after I suggested to them to savor the moment, give us time to get the shot and let the crowd appreciate the culmination of the event. People want great photos, and we try to help them throughout the day. Then comes the reminder when you edit the wedding, and you curse them again for not listening.

Yeah what a bunch of idiots. I mean how could they possibly have anything else of their minds at such an event when they have important instructions to carry out given to them by someone that they are paying to perform them a service. I mean fuck this is their WEDDING and you have a vision of it, how dare they ruin that for you.

You have no idea what you're talking about. We communicate with our customers for months leading up to their wedding date. We go over time lines and have a heavy hand in the shaping of their day. They ask us if something will work, time-wise, not the other way around.

Or, let me put it this way: we get paid for our vision.

haha. You have no idea what I comprehend or don't. But its's pretty common sense from a client service standpoint that when you are there to provide a service for someone at en event for them, their required contribution to making your service come out perfectly should be exactly nothing save a timely payment of the bill. Especially a wedding for fuck's sake, if you were good then what you would be saying to them is "Just enjoy yourself, this is your big day, I'll handle the pictures." If you don't feel like you can get great shots without choreographing the wedding then you should be trying harder. Why do they need to kiss for 5 seconds for you to get a good shot of it? Have you not figured out how to tell when that's coming? I feel like they usually announce it... And some people are just uncomfortable showing affection like that in public regardless of the situation, should they just buck up and feel super uncomfortable on that super memorable life moment hanging out in a kiss that feels and looks awkward so you can dick around with your focus and composition? No you fucking berk, they should express their affection for each other in whatever way is comfortable for them as this is THEIR event and you as a hired professional artist should be able to figure out how to capture that beautifully regardless. You can act like I don't comprehend what you do, but really what we have here is that my opinion is making it hard for you to keep being delusional about not being a hack.

and the emoticons were a nice touch in the who's childish debate, Bravo.

I make one small complaint about an annoyance that happens selmdomly to another photographer, and I'm a hack? Look, shooting a wedding is fucking easy if you have the personality for it. And I do tell the customers to just enjoy their day. What you do not understand, idiot, is that customers come to us because they like our photos and have high expectations for their own. And they should for the amount of money they pay.

To claim that a wedding photographer must only shoot in a photo journalistic style is horseshit. There is a time dor that, but not always. Everyone has their own style, opinions and expectations. When we meet with clients, all of this is discussed, everything laid out on the table. The client walks away knowing that we have a lot of experience with what goes on during a wedding, and that we can be trusted to make sure the day goes smoothly. All we ask for is some cooperation during a few key moments of the day.

And I was exaggerating about kissing for 5 seconds.

This got blown out of proportion because you went out of your way to be a dick. If you don't have any photos to submitt, then why don't you just stick to looking at the pretty pictures and keep your fucking mouth shut?

Because I like having discussions and I can do whatever the fuck I want, This is entire thing on my part was about you trying to dictate how people should Kiss at their own weddings, while they pay you. And I didn't go out of my way to be a dick, dry sarcasm just happens to be my chosen language. My main point was that some of those key moments where you are asking for cooperation are THIER moments where you shouldn't be asking for anything, because they should be thinking about the person they are fucking marrying, not you. There are times when yes you have warrant to dictate a little action and get some shots, but during the ceremony and especially at what you already called the culmination of the event, the couple themselves should definitely have no obligations. This is their one day. You said yourself that there are times when you need to stick to a photojournalistic style and times when you don't. That is clearly one of those time. Especially for the amount of money you charge.

and yes, Idiot, I understand people come to you because you take nice pictures and they have high expectations of their own, but you are so fucking delusional and pretentious that you think that means you have to direct all the action at an event that you are but a fractional part of. As an amazing chef picked to cater an event like that because people like food you have made and have high expectations of food you are gonna make for them, does that mean you get to say where people sit, how fast they should eat it and/or when they should eat it. No, the chef is also required to know whats going on at the event, adapt to changes, and produce amazing food when the people are ready to eat. I guest you just aren't that good or committed to servicing your clients, I'm sure you could be, I think you'd just rather make excuses and blame them when it dosen't go ideally. I don't know why I enjoy telling you these observations and opinions, but I do, so there ya go. and here is a picture of my friend if that make you feel better.http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7088/7158582371_4894733b84.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/65044508@N07/7158582371/)

This was the Bon Iver performance at the Sasquatch Music Festival. I was pretty much at center stage with an ultra wide angle lens at around an f3.5 or 4 I believe. I generally use spot metering when shooting low-light concerts to avoid the camera overexposing the image while trying to expose for the darker areas. But yeah, it's all about the ultrawide...

Adam K - I feel like your photos, while exposed well, don't really have much 'in' them. Try shooting early and late in the day to get more interesting skies and keep thinking about whats in your photo - does it need some foreground interest? Wheres the horizon? Whats the point of this photo? I find that looking through photography journals/national geographic etc really helps me train my eye to what looks good and to try to focus my photo on having a point.

I'm no expert, so I won;t use one of my shots to make this point. This photo has almost zero stuff 'in' it, but it conveys something far beyond its content.

Have a look at Jaimes other stuff, its astounding.

http://www.jaimehogge.com/places--things

Another technique, try some different viewpoints - your photos look a little like you are standing up, holding the camera at eye level. Try getting close and low. I shot this with a holga lens on my 20d.

DB, thank you for your response. I agree the first picture in that series has "nothing" in it. I didn't really have a reason for posting it. As far as the others I think they all show where I was "Piney Z" lake, and the park I was in from different perspectives, keeping it open and showing that openness. As far as viewpoints go, you were correct. That day I road my bike 20 mi to get there and didn't want to leave without taking any pics. I took my camera out and snapped all of them quickly, still I could be more conscious of viewpoints. Out of them all the fourth one and the last one I truly care for, and I am proud of ,and are atheistically pleasing to me. I liked your feedback but I would like some feedback on some of my other pics. I liked those photos you posted, I really like "Boogies" work www.artcoup.com , and his work definitely resonates with me, by showing the world in a true but dark and beautiful way. I am going to Amsterdam next weekend and I plan on taking as many pics as possible, I will keep your advice in mind, thanks.

Took a little trip out at the weekend, little place by the name of whittingham hospital.

The parish once contained the largest mental hospital in England, North West England’s nuclear bunker, and, according to legend, a giant cow.

I came across his Essex County book recently, wicked English photographer.

I'm yet to see it...P.s. Because America is so unoriginal they feel the need name several places in their country after an English county so the Essex in Stephen Shores book is reference to somewhere on Americans east coat I believe.....(long story short, he is a Yank)

What's up with the lack of lighting on her face?

As an honest criticism, that shot is a throwaway, not something to be submitted to anyone.

The other two are better, but still not at all complimentary to the subject.

Where you on your own for technique, or was someone there more experienced to assist you?

Others on here can certainly offer coherent advice for studio lighting, because I've never shot in a studio environment. But damn, dude. That's a Zim shot for sure

My teacher thought it was a "dangerous shot" and shit blah blah blah loool also looks alot darker on college computers and the final print making her face darker and her hair more highlighted and hes marking it, so I submitted it to please him. In the other two, the girl is supposed to be looking stern and kind of formal (for like child neglect or some shit, i shot these a few months back). The "client" was very happy with them, giving me a high grade because I'm working to "near professional standards".
I do see where you are coming from haha but unlike zim I am willing to take advice, learn and improve, and also know how to correctly expose a shot (not demonstrated above) and studio work is so easy to get the exposure right as the meter tells you what f stop to use and you've already set the iso and the shutter speed on camera.

College in the UK is something you do after you leave "high school" at 16 so it really is n00b level as far as photography goes and Ive seen endless amounts of student work like it, it'll improve over time...

P.s. If you use hard light in your photos then any creases, wrinkles, imperfections etc will become more apparent as the shadow it creates casts a harsh shadow making all those creases in those un-ironed textiles even more apparent. (That first hoe should really have ironed hers though, I dont know if the other girl was doing hers for extra arty points)

The posing is very flat and dead-pan also..look at Sharkys photo below...body is leant against the wall, facing away from the camera making the model slimmer in the frame, his neck is up straight and the chin is out, also and this is KEY.....look at his eyes, there's a mild squint in the lower eyelid, so whilst he isnt smiling or pulling faces his eyes still add interest to the picture...if they were more expressionless then the picture would lose a lot of interest. The photographer Rankin tells his subjects to "smile with the eyes" or to "look through the lens" and it's an attempt to draw some interest from the eyes. A smileless expression can look very morbid if the eyes are lifeless.

https://m.ak.fbcdn.net/a1.sphotos.ak/hphotos-ak-ash4/292425_481286511882169_972159869_n.jpg

Paolo Roversi did some nice work doing lighting painting and he hid the models face, if you can be bothered to go back and are still at college could be worth mimicking this....

Hey guys,

My name is Nick. Im putting on a group photography show in London, UK
at the end of September. I am looking for photographic submissions
from at least 10 photographers, artists, film makers or just guys that
are involved in rollerblading. The aim is not to showcase
rollerblading, but to bring together rollerbladers and their art work
in a single place, creating an open platform for everyones work to be
viewed by the public.

The theme of the show will loosely be Discarded. incase you don't know what that means.
To throw away, or reject.

the guide lines are simple and as follows

-you must be a rollerblader
-one image will be displayed at the show per person. send no more than
5 if you cant decide
-you must submit your image to me as JPG/jpeg/tif at 300dpi and be
able to print up to A3 (no raws - use dropbox for tiffs)
-submissions by the 20th september latest.
-you must make sure you check your images, anything black and white,
be aware that I am having these images C-type printed on archive
paper, blacks can look a little light, make sure your blacks are
black.
-NO ACTION SPORTS photos, this isn't a rollerblading exhibition, its
just strictly for rollerbladers only to enter. think 'FILM POR VIDA'
print exchange
-NO CATS. not tumblr either.
-you must be over 18 if you want to attend the event as it will be at
a bar (who am i kidding, there will be no bouncers and ill be too
stressed out to care)
-please give your name (as you wish it to be displayed) and title of
the image with your submission. links to any portfolios and contact
details.
-Your work will be printed in a limited edition zine that will be for
sale on the night. you will get a copy for free for being involved, if
you cant make it, add an address and ill mail one too you.
-if you want to sell your print (framed/unframed) let me know how much
and i will label it with a price.
-sponsers, if you want to attach your brand, clothing company, wheel
company, crew, blog, fashion house etc please do so, its totally free,
just email me a logo and promise to promote our event via a tweet, a
blog post or social networky things. im paying for everything,
printing, framing, zine printing, and will make my money back off of
the bar ill get 10% of the total of the nights takings. if we make
about 400 quid like last time, then that means i get 40 quid, so
printing will be covered.
-bring all your friends. group art shows are a great chance to
network, catch up with friends in real life and collaborate on
projects.

If you have met me you will know I like a drink and so Im talking to
Tiger beer and Kopparberg cider about sponsoring the show with some
free alcohol. either way the bar will throw us a free bottles and some
Tequilla and some Jagerbombs for the fact that Grifs blade video did
really well when it preimered there last month.

and again if you know me you'll know that i love free stuff, so please
bring t-shirts, zines, bussiness cards, prints, anything you can give
away, sell, donate.

Film makers, there is a big massive screen and projector, it would be
great to show blading movies and edits. however it must be on dvd
format.

please pass this out to other people who you may think are interested.
if this works it would be great to get it in a gallery next time. This
will be my 3rd group showing and Im really excited for this to be the
best so far.

please forward this email to your friends and thank you and I hope to
hear from and see you all soon.

I tried to follow the rule of 1/3's, but not too sure if they appear that way now.

I would have shot it landscape or whatever it's called. But i'm not really a photographer. Just a boner.

chris duke
16.08.2012, 10:57
I only wanted the squirrel and the sweater to be visible. The girl wearing it is rather skinny, so you would have gotten a lot more than I wanted to show, had I taken it in landscape.

Boner.... Tee hee hee

critique mode

1. i cant tell what's going on, stuffed animal in a sweater? way too much dead space with the subject being hidden from view

2. better that you can see the face but selective color is what 14 year old girls do with their iphone to make it the uninteresting photo they took "interesting" it almost never works, and it doesn't work here.. it actually makes me think about how awful selective color is instead of the photo. but if it were in color or b&w the wrinkles are distracting and so is the sweater band at the bottom

3. probably the best composition but again, what am i looking at? I think you need to step back (mayber have her with her arms flat at her sides and include a little in a landscape orientation) or get in even closer. if you wanted to do something where it was all sweater, and the animal popping its head out at a 3rd I think it would be cool. the sweater here just doesn't work, the band on the bottom doesn't match the rest of the fabric and makes the idea not work. maybe she could have grabbed the bottom corners and stretched the sweater out to give you more of a flat surface. why are you watermarking these, just curious?

I don't know what the story is behind these pix but that's what I thought looking at them

chris duke
16.08.2012, 14:22
Yikes.

I'm guessing selective color is an application or something? I had to do that with a brush ha.

For me I loved the fact that the squirrel was hiding his face, that coupled with the sweater pocket made it seem like he was "hiding."

The band is the exact same as the band on the pocket, so it does go with the rest of the sweater as there are 2 pockets.

The final is the tail of the 2nd squirrel that was running around on her shoulders and what not, but came down for a quick second to see what was going on.

I do appreciate your opinion though. It is easy for me to enjoy the picture because I know the full story behind it and as you pointed out, it doesn't make sense to the viewer.

Finally, the watermarking is because we put them on all of our pictures that go on our facebook page.

What about this photo?

This was edited with shitty windows before I got Lightroom.... Yes, lightroom.

haha sorry man I'm really not trying to be a dick, I've just been doing it for a while. In school you get some pretty harsh ones.

the background is not great, and I have trouble with this in my photos too. lately i've been trying to frame a nice picture and then bring in a subject. some photographer said once "everything in my background is meant to be there" or something of that nature. For that photo I'm not liking him in the middle of the frame. You don't have to do rule of thirds, but for something like that, maybe have some leading lines going up to him. The rail takes away some attention from him. t Why not use that hallway at the top of the stairs? if he were in the center and you used the fence and wall to lead up to him it could have been more powerful. He looks a bit soft but I can never trust that due to various compressions. it's a bit flat too

i probably sound overly harsh because i have no emotional investment into the photo and there is no reason to be soft haha. it's mostly subjective and just because i criticize it doesn't mean a client would.

chris duke

Well with that photo I should tell the story.

I was taking pictures of my friends skating the ledge above, and this guy wondered over to see what was up. He hung around for a little bit and seemed to enjoy what we were doing.

I turned to snap a picture and he looked right into the camera. I walked over to ask if I could do another, and he said no.

So that was my one shot haha

I am fine with critisizing my photos, that is why I post them here. Always trying to get better and I know it might take a while!

only way to learn what you did wrong in the photo is to hear the bad and maybe its me but i feel when my teachers are more harsh during critiques i learn more.

Well I'm a HUGE pussy, so don't be too harsh haha

My boss used to be really harsh for the first 3 months that I worked for him. Not to be mean, but to hep me learn what I was doing wrong. He wasn't nasty about it, he would just explain why the image didn't work and how it should have been shot given the circumstances. I never took any of it personally, I trust his judgement 100%. He's the pro, not me.

I edit every wedding that I am involved with be it as lead or 2nd shooter, so I don't make the same in-camera mistakes that I used to make when I was starting out.

Now, the only thing he really does when I hand him an edit is make a few adjustments to how I cropped something. The last wedding I edited he only slightly re-cropped 5 images out of 725, and didn't touch any of the others for any reason at all.

Feels good, man.

looks ever so slightly crooked to me, but I might be wrong. really dope dude! one thing I'll mention, if you are shooting lights (or the sun) stopping down to something like f/11 will make the flare much more appealing. of course if you do shoot a higher aperture then you will have to compensate with shutter speed or iso, but in this shot you could have shot 320 or even 640 iso with maybe a 5 second shutter to get that flare (depending on the wind). here is a quick example I shot to demonstrate.

I noticed that today  I had blocked the header back when it was the Franky USD header, and the Stockwell header was blocked too, I guess.

Never noticed it on my phone, but I noticed it on a MacBook Pro I was using today. It's right next to the be-mag logo, how did someone not notice it when it was posted?

Never understood that shit. I did it for a while when I first started then realized a.) how amateur it looks, b.) how much it tarnishes the image , and c.) a watermark, unless embedded over the image, can be easily taken/cropped out of the image.

I only do it on my wedding photos on my website now, but I can turn them on and off; they are not embedded into the image. (I think there are a few on my flickr page, but those will be removed shortly, anyways.) You'd be surprised how many people steal that genre of work and try to pass it off as their own. EXIF data stripping, clone tool, it's too easy these days.

When you make a good portion of your income with a camera, it's important to at least make an attempt to brand your work.

The only people that really bitch about watermarks are other photographers, not clients looking to hire photographers. Just something to think about.

Zim, I've been shooting professionally since I was 18. I am 23 now. So I've been doing this for the better part of my adult life. the difference about how I shoot compared to you is that photo that you think is "my work" isn't. Two photos of me and my girlfriend hanging out/Snap shots that I enjoyed enough to share with you because fast eddie asked me if I even take pictures anymore which sadly I do not for my own self.

And about watermarks. What I believe about watermarks is that if a person genuinely likes your work they will find you. Period. They will hunt you down and look for more of your images to gawk at. If they want to pay you for your services even better. Whenever I see watermarks it just screams, "LOOK AT MY PHOTO. I SHOT THIS. IT SAYS SO RIGHT THERE. DON'T FORGET THAT ITS ME, BEN, A PHOTOGRAPHER. I AM A PHOTOGRAPHHHER". Very amateurish and makes me never want to look for more of their work.

Ask yourself, which successful photographer has ever watermarked their image? Their body of work speaks volumes about themselves to never even have to scribble their name somewhere on the image.

That's understandable and I guess it really comes down to what type of photography you are doing. For me, I want to work editorially as well as in advertising, therefore, something like a watermark does nothing for me. As Dave mentioned, if you have a style of your own and people enjoy your work, that becomes your brand, that becomes your moniker, people will know your work for the certain qualities that it possesses and will, for the most part, be able to identify the work that you create. For example, I can tell a Dan Winters' photograph a mile away and can easily distinguish it from some one like, let's say Peter Hapak. It really comes down to what you are trying to offer, I just agree with Dave that when I see watermarks on images that are otherwise not intended for something like weddings or product photography, for me it screams amateur.

I don't know any of the photographers names you mentioned, perhaps I should revisit nb's photographer thread?

I just do my own thing, but I am woefully ignorant of other people's work. The only good thing to come out of that ignorance is that I don't bite anyone else's style.

I'm slowly adding photos to my website, link is in my sig. Kinda done posting photos in this thread, having multiple hosting sites to bother with is getting old.

I use watermarks on my images. I have found them reproduced under other peoples name and listed as other peoples work. If they like your work enough they will email you and ask you for a copy without your watermark on it. I understand its not the hip thing to do but it does serve a purpose.

Who cares though? People who steal photos certainly cannot reproduce a quality photo if asked to. Watermarks just ugly up photos. I've never been afraid of someone coming up to me and my work and saying, "hey, can you do that same photo except but with my product?" If someone who steals tries to copy your photography and it looks exactly the same then there is a bigger issue at hand being your technique is generic.

Also never be afraid of someone posting up your work as their own. It's stupid.
Only zim does that.

With all the popular forms of social media (facebook, tumblr, instagram, and such) I would much rather have my name "ugly up" the image as it travels across the internet, than have my own image getting posted places with no credit. You never know who is going to stumble across your work on the internet...would much rather be able to receive credit for it.

You never know who is going to stumble across your work on the internet...would much rather be able to receive credit for it.

If this was 2004 where digital photography was still blooming this thought process would more then make sense as high quality DSLR and thus high quality photographs were a rarity. Now a days its not. Really. My 12 year old cousins after having me teach them a bit about their 16mp 12 bit point and shoot were able to take some really pleasing images. Never the less they aren't really afraid of people taking their image credit either mostly because even they understand photography is just a form of amusement to them. No one is ever going to look at their stuff and think it's "art" let alone pay them for it. Now in contrast if you were getting paid for your work you don't need a watermark leading back to your individual. Period.

You never know who is going to stumble across your work on the internet... would much rather not be perceived as an amateur.

(now there is very few instances where I think watermarks are a good idea. lets say event photography during a natural disaster like 9/11. millions of people are gonna see your once in a life time photograph and if your name is on it they will recognize it. at that point it is IN FACT free press. if your shooting something like a high speed car show where the vehicles are at the pinnacle of technology and will hit blogs or magazines like fucking hot cakes, chances are once you post a few low res online with your name these big news companies might hit you up to buy high quality print versions of your image. by all means use watermarks at your discretion... just not on stuff you hope will be taken seriously)

This is a 43 ft. tall glass tower constructed with over 3,200 individual pieces of blown glass. It's at the Indianapolis Children's Museum, and is called Fireworks of Glass. The roof directly above the tower is a giant skylight.

Getting a night shot of this thing is next to impossible. I was working an after-hours event at the museum and got permission to wander a few of the exhibits for photos. The rest are below.
