Yeah I was surprised too because the camera manual said it could only sync to 1/200. :D

My x-sync is 1/250 and i can easly get away with 1/320. I only start to see the dreded black line at 1/400 and faster. I guess they give it some le-way for some reason, just to play it safe.

i did a little test a few minutes ago.

I've got a camera with that samy sync time, canon AE-1. Good camera, not good for action flash though. Unless it's really dark outside.

Balmore
01.03.2005, 16:36
Is 1/2 a stop faster realy a big deal?
Will action realy freeze any better?

I calced some numbers for thought.
A skater traveling at 15mph (6.66m/s) at 90deg to the camera would travel:
111mm in 1/60s
53mm in 1/125s
26mm in 1/250s
21mm in 1/320s
6.6mm in 1/1000s a long flash pulse
0.66mm in 1/10,000s a short flash pulse

Other factors that would alter sharpness:
Focal lengh on the lens, 20mm would give better sharpness than a 100mm lens at the same distance
The distance of the camera to the subject, the further way the lessen the angle of movment across the frame and therefore greater sharpness.

This bit is MY opinion ONLY.
So if flash is the primary light sorce (2 stops more than abmient) I dont think that it should be that much of a problem.
If flash is balanced or used as fill the highest x-sync shutter speed avalable would be best.
Panning would help sharpen the skater but would blur the background.

nice one balmore.
its good that i hardly (i dont?) shoot skaters.
but i think i will be when i get my pocket wizards.
for me, having a camrea that syncs at 1/60, i think its the best to just use 100 iso films alot. depends on the weahter/location ofcourse.. or do you guys have experienced the skater as not sharp at 1/60, with bright weather?

MattCrssngr
01.03.2005, 19:29
If your shooting a skater in bright weather with a sync of 1/60 and light him up well with flashes, then you'll probably be able to freeze him in place, but most likely he will be transparent to a certain degree because of the ambient light behind him burning through.

julyknive

The brighter it is outside, the more motion blur he will get on the skater in action. On the other hand if it's pitch black outside, the only light that will get to the film is the light that was produced by his flash which is going to be a duration of something like 1/1000 - 1/50000 sec. So i think if he shoots in very low light he will be fine, but if he shoots in daylight, that's when the blur comes into play. I think the ideal situation for julyknive would be dark areas with bright flash, not bright areas because he's got to shoot at 1/60th and in constant bright light that won't stop much action i dont think.

x-sync aka flash sync Is the fastest shutter speed available while using flashes with your camera. If your cameras x-sync is 1/90, then you can only take pics using your flash with shutter speeds up to 1/90 of a second.

For 35mm cameras, 1/300 is the fastest X-Sync available, while some medium format cameras and DSLR cameras can sync up to 1/500.

mal
02.03.2005, 18:33
My Fuji S20 pro appears to be able to use flash up to 1/10000. Am I doing something wrong (were you perhaps only referring to slave flash as opposed to the camera's built in flash) or do I just have a very good camera?

MattCrssngr
02.03.2005, 19:11
Shutter speed and x-sync are two different things...
You were looking at what your cameras max shutter speed was, which is 1/10000.
I looked at the specs of your cam on the internet and it actually never said what x-sync your camera shoots at...
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/s20pro.html#specs

Here are the specs for my cam, and you can see by the max shutter speed it says what my cameras x-sync is...
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/300d_views.html#specs

Balmore
02.03.2005, 19:23
and just to confuse things even more some high end SLRs have 2 x-sync speeds. one for any flash that can be connected (1/250) and a second for the dedicated flash with reduced output(1/8000).

Balmore.

Balmore
02.03.2005, 19:45
x-sync on the s20 pro is 1/1000s
the odd thing is that the manual does not state a sync speed although there are a few referances to using flash up to 1/1000s
This may because of the s20 laking in a mechanical shutter and doing it all in electronics.

Balmore

mal
02.03.2005, 19:57
Thanks for helping me out you guys, but I'm still confused. As a test, I just set my shutter to 1/10000, turned the built in flash on, and took a picture. Everything worked fine. I then attatched an external flash to the hotshoe and took a pic, still with the same shutter speed. On both instances the flash fired, and the picture was perfectly exposed. What's going on here?

Balmore
02.03.2005, 20:10
the manual says the MAY be dark if taken over 1/1000s - Fuji realy dont seem to tie the issue down.

Was the photo of an object close by or at the max flash distance?

Balmore

mal
02.03.2005, 20:32
Well it's the middle of the night here, but I just tried taking a pic of one corner of my room, from the opposite corner (distance of about 15 feet) with the same settings as before, and although the picture was slightly underexposed, it was perfectly visible and all the detail was clear.

The R/Y/G lights came from some traffic lights nearby. The thick white one unfortunatley came from a street light.

Feedback and advice appreciated.

1. Wide angle doesnt seem to fit this photo well. I would have used a longer lens and tried to emphasize on the steps at the bottom which shows that its a bigger drop than it seems and if at all possible use flashes to light the drop and the skater.

2. The sun is way too distracting along with all the skaters watching.

I bet that rail is tiny, god damn short americans.

UK rails are all taller than basketball nets...

actualy those rails at silvercreek at pretty high - higher than many rails over here in the uk. my favourite ones are the flat long ones at the top near the main entrance. does the little asian guy still drive around in his gold cart on weekends!?

i'll be back there for a few weeks this summer. if anyone can wants to hook up let me know otherwise im not taking my skates

a spot where a lightbundle comes together. as for that photo above, its in the middle of that handrail/curb.. strong hotspots (as in overexposed) can be super annoying in photography, its just a matter of using a lightmeter

my boss let me borrow his d2x this weekend. all i have to say is, i really shouldn't have done it. after using it i haven othing but disdain for my d70, but i can't really justify (or afford) dropping 5k on a body, considering i don't even have a lens collection yet. WHAT'S A BOY TO DO!?

haha, yea its really mine. ive got a bunch of different ones. i have been wanting to take a shot like that for a while now and someone gave me free tickets and they happend to be in the upperdeck, front row directly behind home plate. couldnt have worked out any better. it was a good game, drew carey caught a foul ball.

The telephoto shot of that trick didn’t justify the tricks difficulty or the obstacles difficulty.. This perspective shows more of what matters than the other angle did. I personally dont like wide angle focal lengths for skating.

the asa of photography. you got to shoot your heart out while 200 others shoot their hearts out. throughout different cities. they set up obsticles and you have to shoot them. then the top ten from each comp go on to the finals in LA and the top ten will become a pro photographer for daily bread, be-mag, crazy roller, ect.

Why do you want people to post pics with mf, you cant even distinguish their superior quality over 35mm and digital after scanning and compressing to post on forums. I think Wes Driver shoots medium format too.

That lens (10-22mm) was made to create a 16mm focal length but without any distortion, but in my opinion it creates a more disturbing distortion than the regular circular fisheye, I'm interested in what Julyknive thinks about that lens, lol.
