maybe its just me but in your photos cleary there is hella artifacting around the subject in each image.

andrew cleary
11.07.2005, 09:00
mmm, i dont really know what artifacting is, but it doesnt sound good. im guessing you mean the way i compress the picture and the loss in quailty. could you explain what you mean? the images look fine to me and obviously better when they are printed.

andrew cleary
11.07.2005, 10:50
well, i just did some research on it and I dont really see it.

our other people seeing this in my photos?

to compress i go to file:save for web. use a jpeg setting at like 70% the quailty and the image 30% in size. does this sound about right?

inverse
11.07.2005, 11:37

better. now keep working on your lighting and start working on composition. there are unneeded objects in the shot. try shooting some of them vertically and tighter on the subject. getting everything that he is skating (approach and landing) and leave the other stuff out of the shot.

and get you friend to take his hat off

learn from every shot you take. after every shot, try to figure out how it could have been better. look at a daily bread or a be-mag. try to recreate what others have done as a learning tool. im not saying bite peoples work and post it but do it to learn so that you can make your own master piece. 3500 shot means nothing if you didnt learn something from them.

^ crop crop crop crop

What does that building have to do with the trick? Nothing. Its big ugly and boring, crop that building out of there and get a different angle. That or zoom in. Shots from far away work when the stunt is huge, this trick isn't.

s.
18.07.2005, 07:20

isaacaiken
18.07.2005, 09:33
ya the building is really distracting

andrew cleary
18.07.2005, 10:02
see, the problem is that the main focus of a photo should be something worth looking at. in this photo, the main focus is the building which makes for a pretty boring picture. however the onlything this picture has going for it, is that guy doing a royal on a drop ledge. now if the main focus would have been the skater, it would have been a tight picture. so like chris said, crop that bitch. or next time, just get a whole lot closer.

s.
18.07.2005, 10:13

the first ones better but you you lost the drop. the second one you kinda get the drop but his backs too you

andrew cleary
18.07.2005, 11:04
its not the objects sadi, its the focus. i could see if you had a beautiful sunset or a plane crashing into that building or somethign cool like that, but all you have is a shitty building and a cool trick. the first angle is really good, you just has to be tighter or the viewers attention is lost.

rol SYR
18.07.2005, 11:38
sadi, that second one isnt too bad, but it come back to the focus like everyone said, and it looks liek hes got a pole growing out of his head

MattCrssngr
18.07.2005, 12:39
I like the second more than the others. I think the rocks balance out the objects in the horizon well. You could make it better if you used a lens with a shallow depth of field to blur out the background and if you underexposed it and put some flashes on the ledge and skater that would make it much better.

s.
18.07.2005, 13:10

my camera is Canon a510- only way to add extra flashes is to buy a slave, I cant even synchronize it with a cable :? and all ppl from Poland like this building- maybe its because our architecture isnt that modern ;) but thanks for every comment, it helps!

Look at this photo. Heres an example of a good photo. Great lighting/good angle/good trick( Andrew you should have made him do it again and grab it!). But theres no extra shit distracting us from whats happening in the photo; rollerblading!! Look at the stuff Andrew and BS post. Make your photos look like that.

Go buy DB, Be-Mag, The Skateboard Mag, and Transworld skateboarding. Look at the lighting, the angles, etc; then go shoot. Also you should head over to wheelsandwax.com, register for the forums and have other photographers tear apart your photos, you'll learn lots. Do some research, find out what they are doing and your not doing. Then head out shooting, and then post more up here...

Well duh, why would I want to land in grass? :D

But no we found the wood there and we spotted this rail while randomly driving around. Cmon don't tell me you wouldn't hit a few tricks on it.

Well after doing this to my hand
http://gallery.photo.net/photo/3491820-lg.jpg
I've been out of the game for a good two months, but it was well needed. Starting to pick up the pace abit lately. Meeting up with The Head tomorrow to do some product shots of the new Valo JJ1 for the upcoming Valo advertisments. I am also starting up a new project with a small clothing company called Bay Cal Clothing (Bay Area California) that will feature some dope hats, girls shirts, wifebeaters, and guys shirts. I'm doing all the photography for their website and will be shooting and designing their catalog.

So basically I haven't been able to shoot much but here are a couple of pics that some may have seen already but what the hell.. I'm bored!

Well it's obvious this guy didn't use a flash.. so that's why (i assume) he used the lower shutterspeed.. object would've been too dark if he did? but i agree, way too blurry and soft now. it's quite hard to take decent skate photos without some solid flashes...

you try get under a rail that small without going that low, the cess was before the rail then under it, u have to drop down.

your pictures still need some work but they are 500% better, much improved composition.

they would be much better though if they werent quite as busy. There are tons of heads in the background and other things going on. take the photo so the only focus to the entire picture is the skater and the obstacle. Of course there are situations where that isnt needed but in your case that is the largest issue. Check out chris Ws and bs's pictures and youll see the composition and lighting puts forces you to focus on the skater.

i think he means focus in terms of composition not focusing the lens.

while this page was loading i thought the 2 last pictures were one shot.. so, i'd have liked them better if you didnt crop 'm.. colors are beautiful, but im not sure about the composition. good stuff though.. keep m coming

julyknife, I dont understand why you dislike borders so much. borders remind me of matting on a framed photograph. can you explain?

julyknive
24.08.2005, 09:14
i just dont see why one would use it. to me it doesnt add anything to the photo itself. it would be different if you would have printed the photo yourself (mask borders can add something to a picture). it just ruins the image.

to each their own i guess? will stop grumbling :)

just mess around with it on a tripod. I like 10-30sec exposures myself. set it to 10 seconds then check your light meter and see if it is under or over exposed and adjust the fstop until it is properly exposed. I would use a low iso to cut down on grain. its digital so trial and error is your best bet because every situation is different.

well that picture was really lucky....the exposure was extermly long...in the range of around 5minutes i think...it was pretty much pitch black minus a couple small reflections of street lights in it....i shot it on 200asa film (its not digital) at like f5.6 just to have a larger dof rather then having part of the thing out of focus shooting wide open.

sick, i just spend a couple hours sitting on the grass loooking at... not much... BUT! i did some stuff, here is the result after a lot of experimenting, yes focus etc isnt perfect but i learnt a lot for another occasion now...
my garden in pitch black for a couple of minutes exposure, a small amount of light came through from a window in the house
http://magicodesign.com/photos/golfballssmall.jpg
my street (and car aerial)
http://magicodesign.com/photos/streetlights.jpg
me using my remote to get in car drive down street and back to test something - then click the shutter closed, this is the result haha

so addictive! not the best pics i know but i think it could lead to some nice ones now i know how!

you need to whitebalnce your camera for tungston because those pictures are really red youll get much better color if you do.

T!M
25.08.2005, 17:40
yeah i literally just read up all that in the manual, i got the white balance set and did a few test shots, real wack but it taught me how to get em looking "natural" thats one for 2morro i guess, thanks for the pointer though!

T!M
26.08.2005, 08:15
yeah haha it needed locking up so i set my cam on the tri-pod for another "test" haha used my reote to set the shutter open drove up the street - 3point turn drove back and then closed it again, got out the car and thats what i got haha

yea for those shots you have the flash go off multiple times so the camera only picks up the image when the flash goes off so u pause for the flash move over pause for the flash and so on all on one exposure.
