Taken as part of my digital production project, I did a photo essay on this homeless guy. This shows up really dark on the monitor I'm on now, but I think it's calibrated wrong. You should be able to make out more detail on the hands.

Oh, and Liam that ferris wheel photo works much better in colour. Nice work either way. Good to see you getting better.

haha theres one of thoes shitty council excuses for a "youth shelter" by my house. should zoom out or move back a couple of steps to get his arms in shot. i like the colour version of the wheel :)

haha yeah, i was dead close with a 18-55mm lens, zoomed out as far as i could get. i shot it from a bit further away but the flash wasn't working anywhere near as good. i need to pick up a hand held flash, or a wider lens from somewhere. thanks for the feedback

i really like the paris' photos too, altough some motifs are not very interesting. the mood of the photos is what i really like about them, I dig the look of analog photos so much more than the look of digital ones.

i took these on Holga, then gave the film a preliminary scan to see which images i wanted to print. didnt expect that by using a uni scanner that was full of scratches, dust and shit, when i inverted the colours and gave them all a quick auto-levels/colour/contrast, the dirt was going to trick photoshop into giving the images lots wierd colours.

i actually prefer these distorted scans to the darkroom printed images by a long way. im considering blowing them up to about 5ft high for an exhibition i've got in feb - or maybe painting them...

Both the body and lens have to be cocked when changing lenses, or else you will jam the camera...

the contrast is not that bad and i like the amount of noise/filmgrain.
what i think you could work on is the composition. i like the 2nd better than the first one.. it could be her pose though?

what scanner do you have?

nog wat tips:
- z/w fotos als grayscale opslaan
- 72 dpi ipv 300 ;)

I got photos scanned for the first time, unfortunatelly sharpness- and colors got really fucked up, tried to fix the colors with photoshop to make the scanned pictures look similar to the originals. Contrast got lost too, whatever... I shot all of them with Canon Eos 500 and an Canon 80-200 Zoom, they are moreless snapshots of what i thought looked cool. please tell me what you think. thanks

canon 300d and yes two flashes, sunpak 544's. As far as post-production, I resized it and slight increase of saturation.

I checked out your website, and I REALLY like alot of your stuff. You definetly make use of your flashes and all of your shots have very dramatic and creative lighting. What percentage of the stuff on your website was shot on film with the Holga 120N, and how much is digital? I was also wondering if you could give someone like me (who has little to no experience with flashes and flash setups) some insight on how to get started using external flashes and studio-style lighting effects?

some insight on how to get started using external flashes and studio-style lighting effects

www.photo.net

the crowd there is pretty stodgy, but it's old school www (since 1997 i think) and it is the best on the web as far as archived info for all things photographic

try the 'lighting' forum or just read the 'making photographs' article to start...

Thanks for the comments, as for my site, pretty much the last 30% is digital, everything that has frame numbers at the bottom of the photo is film and shot with the holga 120n.
As Chamique Holdsclaw said, photo.net is a good source, I prefer skateboardphotography.com but its a shame you have to subscribe to get access to the article/learn sections that are specific to lighting techniques..

how did you get that type of lighting/shot? what settings?

whenever i try to shoot stuff at night with a flood light, they always come out dark because if i take the shutter speed down any more they're just blurry.

is it a seperate flash that you're using?

You need more than one flash because the ambient light is so low there has to be something else illuminating the obstacle.

If you're using flash you can also get away with a slower shutter speed because the fast burst of light freezes the subject in the frame.

the blurred effect was caused by the macro lens, shooting on a wide aperture and close up. This type of effect is known as "bokeh" - i think it's of japanese origin. I only used photoshop for resizing and some slight level changes.

jesus christ man...
nice photo fuzzy.
Initially, I took his response as condescending, so I responded the same, but now it seems he was just trying to broaden my photographic lexicon.

I didn't say I didn't like the shot, I actually think it's really cool. I don't have a problem with unnatural and harsh. A casino is, in almost every way, unnatural and harsh, so it would make sense that a photo of something one immediately associates with casinos would also be unnatural and harsh.

Here's a photo I took a couple of days ago. Shot it with a D70s

you nerds! bokeh is a japanese "word" but it refers to the quality or characteristics of out of focus areas in an image, not to the fact that you HAVE out of focus areas. You can have octagonal, or jagged, or soft bokeh—but most photos possess it. And those cards certainly don't look like PS blur, but I think they are a little too out of focus. Anyway...

The exposure of the sequence is perfect.. if you changed the shade of the skater to what you believe is "right" then the photo would probably be overexposed.

haha - I tried to be sneaky and not post this picture in the shoe thread because I knew somebody would say something about the laces but I see I was still caught by you two - but no I don't wear my laces like that . . . after cleaning my dunks one day I got bored and decided to lace them like that & I haven't worn them since that day so I never got around to fixing the lacing

I just put them on for the picture but it's good to see you all are keeping things in order kids are getting more and more ridiculous with lacing nowadays . . . .

ThE SaSqUaTcH

for infrared, i think you have to send it into a shop so they can modify stuff inside of the camera.

or you can order the parts and install it yourself, but i'd be careful.

i don't think you can "see how much you like photography" by taking pictures of yourself with a self timer. i mean sure you can set up the angle and such, but it just doesn't seem to me that you're actually learning much. take some pictures at your next session or something, see how those turn out, then you can see if you really like it or not.

from what you have posted though, it seems like you're pretty good at getting a good angle and such as well as being good at the self timer. hit up that next session, then post those.
