During my last semester of photography, our final project was a 12 page portfolio. I wanted mine to be somewhat diverse, so I wanted to show I had skills in the studio, shooting both people and more "commercial" type stuff...so check this out

nothing much to say really. all it is is a lightslave i bought for £30 as i have no need for radioslaves, mounted via hotshoe to a Cobra fa700 which cost me £90 about 18months ago, triggered by another cobra i was using on my camera.

brandx your stuff is really good...i like the skatin shot with the flash alot and the first set of b/w shots ....theres a lot of other good stuff posted here too from other people that im to lazy to mention.....w/e good work...ill post some of my stuff later i just shot my first few rolls of slides and they hopefully will turn out good and i just shot a roll of b/w that i think will be really good...hopefully (usally when i think that the pics turn out like shit ahah)

chris w, i do like that mistral, its rad, but clean your lens man! its really off putting, especialy where the mark is! but its a nice shot. i like the tilt the camera technique, its over used to fuck here in magazine and looks shit, but im enjoying it on that shot a lot.

jz, i like the fence shots. im a sucker for small DOF shots, they always work, i think you could have got better results with that shot and definatly the other two if you were to have shot them during the lighter hours. they seem like they were done in colour and scanned in greyscale as they are just mid tones, no blacks or whits as such. try using ilford hp5 film. its a 400 speed and is really good for time lapse shots, or well anything over 1//125. i swear by it.

yea i have heard good things about the ilford stuff but i can only process trix and tmax at school so i usally shoot that....and the greyscale got fucked up some how in the computers at school u can see it a lot in the last picture, i dont know what happend...ill try out the ilford though and just get it processed at the helix (awsome photo place in chicago, you wish u lived here...)

Brandx: that mistrial shot is actually just dodging in photoshop that was done on a really bad monitor. It looked fine on the computer monitor I was on but, on other screens it looks like ass. I keep my lenses hella clean :)

damn chris, thanks for the kind words man. i'm just lucky enough to live in a city with lots of spots to practice shooting, and lots of friends who lace tricks daily haha.

i dont put any of your stuff to shame though man, your work is hot. plus you know how to shoot a lot of other stuff that i'm clueless about. if i went to shoot a band or some event, i might as well take a disposable. i remember at montreal imyta way back you showed up with like 40 rolls of film haha. thats all it takes, shooting lots.

ok heres my first attempt at slide film...i under exposed most of the stuff but a few things i liked came out heres what i got...a few are photoshoped a little (one is obvious) i also had to work on a few cause the slide scanner gave a lot fo them like a green tint that needed to be gotten rid of...tell me what you think

Ok this one was a bit of a bitch. I don’t have a tripod yet. I placed the camera on the best sill I could find and hit the button. I think this was a 25 second exposure. 4:30AM or something. Los Angeles, 110 Freeway. The 5MP shot is was detailed, this one sucks.

Is the lighting of color an effect you put on in photoshop or are they stage lights? whatever it is it looks really good on those photos. I like the last one with the red overcast and what seems to be a green shadow.

fuck yes tyson, try using ilford hp5, itll give you really contrast driven images - solid blacks, clean whites and nice midtones which would be amazing on the flower and piano shots. i love the chair one.
chris i love that shot with the guy on the mic, that guy in the back is like whaa!

chris, were you at final4 the other year in san jose? i remember someone shooting who look exactly like you with a eos, fish and using an on cord flashgun, getting very low on shots on the square low rail chaz was fucking killing - was that you?!

from a photographer's perspective they're pretty shitty since, for most of them, i had nothing but my own hands (which were shaking from cold) to hold the camera still..., but there is just something surreal about them that makes them appeal to me.

I double exposed the negative with no flash. I'm also working with 100 asa, so I overexposed the film by a stop to see if it would get some cool lighting. I'm all about experiementing haha.

KEVIN, you skate with David Johns???? My name is Cedric, I skate with those kids every now and then. Where abouts in Orlando do you live? I'm right out by UCF. If you ever want to join any of our productions were alwase filming for some kind of project, and we can alwase use another staff photographer.

Yeah, I just met up with him when I got into town. I'm in Pine Hills area. 1203 Emeralda St. (32808).
As far as joining in any of your productions.. if you need another creative person with experience in real filmmaking (and has own equipment.. cameras, support, steadicam, etc) then let me know.. plus I'm always writing or helping others write different short and feature length films or art films and experimental stuff. There's a good chance one of the features I'm about to make down here will be premiering and running in some of the theatres around here.

the bottom half from the black and white are really nice, especialy the swimming pool shot, but personaly i dont think the top ones work as well. the lighting in them is fine (the top one could maybe do with a softbox placed about 10ft from her face, just to lighten up the skin a bit but still keep the hard shadows), i not too sure why youve used the same background tone as her skin colour. shes just kind of flat on the image, maybe thats were some harsher lighting would work,

you get away with it on the bench shot with the umbrelas showing, but yea, bottom half are nice

lovely shots chris. although i hate fisheye, your band shots you use it for are rad. still using those colour gels or is that coloured lighting? your bottom shot looks like its been cross processed!

tyson, you take photos like you take polaroids and i love it. all kind of shot in a lomo style - ok, ive just reread your post and realised they are actualy holga lomo shots! haha, i realy realy love the ceiling fan shot

digital or film?^^ your shots look very washed out, almost underexposed. if your camera has the facility, try putting your exposure compensation down by 2.0 and see how your shots come out. a flash might sort your shaddow situation

you want to take a look at your shutter speeds, your getting camera shake

Yeah I am not feeling these from Kevin. I actually think you should soften and spread out the lighting, and separate your subject from the background. This would also help with the consistent highlight blow-out. I don't know what your workflow is, but a lot of these also are unsharp. The "black and white" one is pretty muddy too, perhaps you just did desaturate or greyscale, but it is quite flat - this is due also to the background.

i thought i was on my own for a while there, although i do actualy like the black and white portrait, perhaps the wall could be slightly blured, it would make it darker and the subject would stand out far more.

its amazing what you see when you really look at someones work. check out the black and white womens bones around her neck (ive forgotten the propper name), you could grab onto them. then check out tub girl, she has hair on her chest!

Some fashion based work - I wanted to look alternative ways of documenting fashion so naturaly being a collector, I chose sneakers. The piece is actualy 9 long. When installed there were captions of each sneaker with model name, year of manufacture, rare or limted info. Theres a pic of it installed on the polaroid post if thats still around.

for the one with the cobble stones and chequed slip ons, i used a fixed 20mm nikkor wide angle as i was just experimenting with compositions when i took that shot. i forget i was using the 20 when i actualy took the other 8 (other 2 shown) so i used a 24mm, you wouldnt really notice the difference with the two lenses unless id just told you - bet you can see the difference now! glad you like chris

AH HA!!!! I fooled you YES!!!! The last photo the flash did go off! I had a really fast shutter speed so no background, very little bits of the background were showing and it annoyed me so I burned it down in photo shop, nothing big just a little bit of burning...

And yes this is the show my flash got injured at :cry:

hey Chris my collegue, nice shots mate! :)
but dont you get fed up with the fish eye sometimes? i used it so much (to shot bands) that i kinda got tired of it. now i mostly use my 50 mm (28mm as well) to shoot sweet compositions (mainly to capture the emotions of the musician).

ps: i should be posting more pics.. im sorry! i will be updating my bandphotography section soon though ;)

I've been out on that pier in Ventura, CA. My sister was thinking of going to the Brooks Institute right outside of Venture, and we went and messed around on the pier. Also went and skated "SkateStreet" while I was there. It wasn't as great as people had been telling me. :?

well.
i dont know any brands exactly but ive used two different negative scanners at school.
1. a cheaper one, i think one of like 80 euros. and i can tell you, it suckeD!!! low image quality and not sharp at all.

2. a huge kodak scanner. i think it cost school like 3000 euros haha.. i was quite impressed by the quality. but you gotta make sure you clean your negatives from any dust.

shaine lapointe did this 4 times, on the 4th i fucked up and got the pic when he was 180ing off :oops: he wasnt doing it for the pics, but rather for the video camera i just got lucky and could try it 4 times.
The first one i wasn't paying attention when he was going so i quickly grabbed the camera thats why it's not perfectly balanced/centered.
