is a moped worth it?

thinking about buying my neighbors moped. i'll need to do a little bit of work on it, but i know for a fact its nothing major or expensive. i can't afford to have a car so i want a moped.

it's a 91 tomos sprint and it's fucking sweet.


so, should i get it or keep my car as long as i can.

if you don't mind the wrenching, be sure you can get parts cheap/easy for it and do her up. an old roomate of mine had a jawa and i am pretty sure it was produced in a country that no longer exists. they are good on gas, i wouldn't mind having one so i could skip on parking costs. i could just park it in the rear entrance of my building, some guy parks his motorcycle there haha.

I have a honda, and my sister has a Yamaha. I didn't get much use of mine because I grew up in the country and mine was specifically made for city driving (ie we had a 4-wheeler and a big dirt track). Also it didn't go above 35 mph. But when I was in that in between stage of having a drivers license a job and no car it was awesome.

Anyways my point is; if you're handy with motors and you like to tinker a moped is a fun hobby.

I wouldnt rely on it for transportation.

You don't need insurance or a license (in Michigan at least) so that's a plus. Plus... good gas mileage. You look like a doof, have to fix the piece of shit, can't go more than 30 mph, can't take other people, have traffic get pissed at you for going slow, can't ride on freeways, can die pretty easily, and get rained on so that sucks.

If you keep the moped stock and don't get an exhaust or a new cylinder then you should be fine. I bought a moped for 1200, and wasted 1800 in parts... I broke the crankshaft and blew up two racing cylinders on it. I learned alot about them and I had the fastest one in Florida at one point (at the annual get together in Daytona Beach) and it ran off of 104 octane jet fuel. I returned it to stock cylinder and exhaust, It still has a stroker crankshaft in it so I still need to get the jetting correct. If the thing doesn't go 40mph don't be surprised, if you try to make it faster then more than likely it will break because racing parts are meant to be raced once really hard and then stripped down and replaced. I had upgraded the 50cc to 74cc, It once went 65mph but now I am happy cruising at 34mph. I also fell doing a wheelie around a corner and ripped out my eyebrow ring, and I almost got blood on my new senate shirt. (that's when I learned to wear a helmet)

Oh and you can wear your skates on them which is the reason I got it in the first place, there is nothing like taking a corner all laid out with a skate for stability. I also kicked/skated down a car as I passed it because they pulled out infront of me.

oh and if you soup it up then you will to premix your oil which sucks after a while.

I also cut out the storage under the seat of this Razz scooter and I duct taped urban camo on it, cut off the turn signals..
It was named scooter trash and I was within an arms grasp of the person that stole it from out front of my house (not key)

depends what you need it for, I live inner city so i use my to commute to work (because i can go in between cars) and I can park it for free also where my car cost $10 a day. unless you live inner city i wouldnt bother.

they are shitty for long distances, anything that requires more than 15-20 minutes of driving sucks

You can get a semi stock bike to hit 40 easy. Get better pipe(some as cheap as 50 bux) and a carb but keep the stock cylinder and head.

i've gps'd my bikes 48 and 45 respectively. If you live in the city you really don't need to be going faster than 40 anyways.

I would above all, make sure you get plated. Being plated will make you less likely to get pulled over by the chop shops and they usually never ask for insurance, even if it is required.
