Sure, in a few very controlled situations it's possible, picture-wise, but the audio isn't anywhere even close, and outside of said situations a naked (no accessories/add-ons) DSLR with the kit lens is going to give you much WORSE video than an FX or whatever other prosumer/professional video camera in that price range.

Oh, I get it... you're a spec nerd. There's a hell of a lot more to picture quality than resolution, bud. What about smooth focusing? CMOS jello? IS noise? Color reproduction? Ergonomics? And most importantly, AUTOFOCUS... and accessible controls for all these (and other) things?

I think you mean an XLR adapter AND an external mic, but that's still only half the issue- the main problem is the T2i's automatic audio gain control.

BTW, I am not "against" DLSR filming- I am about to start selling off my photo and video setups to finance a 7D setup- I just happen to know what I'm getting myself in for, and it is NOT something equivalent to a prosumer/professional video camera... at least not without a lot of add-ons and a lot of know-how.

i dont know al, id say any hdslr blows away any prosumer hd camera as far as image quality. as far as convenience ya there is a big problem there with the lack of autofocus, handle, screen, and the jello. i actually think the control accessibility is really easy with the 7d though, just thumb the wheel to adjust the aperture, index finger the shutter speed, for iso you just gotta pop a little button next to the shutter speed wheel first.

Sorry, comparing the $830 you spent on the T2i, with a slow kit lens, to the $3000+ you would spend on a prosumer video camera (let's say an FX-whatever or an XH-A1 or a used HVX) is just not a fair comparison. Those two things- just those two things, mind you, no other gear- are so massively different in capability that it's silly. The T2i is lacking all the things I pointed out previously and more: image stabilization, a servo'ed zoom, AUTOFOCUS, ergonomics for more than one shooting position, manual audio with XLR in, an LCD, a viewfinder, a handle, focal reach, lens speed... do I need to keep going?

In terms of filming skate videos, an HDSLR is a bare Corvette chassis in a crate, that cost you say $10,000; and a prosumer video camera is a complete, off-the-lot Ford Focus SVT, which cost, say, $25,000.

Sure, the Corvette chassis is better designed, and when set up with the right matching components will totally outperform the Focus; but you can get in the Focus and drive it right now. You ain't doing much with the Corvette chassis, short of Fred-Flinstoning it up and down your driveway, until you spend another twenty or thirty K.

You answered your own question within your question. They only filmed PARTS of it with a DSLR (and a 5D2 at that, I believe, not a 7D- that's what Austin had last time I saw him. Also, the 50D is "the next step up" from the T2i in Canon's DSLR range, not the 7D) because they wouldn't have been able to do the whole thing with it.

kelsos do have a 7d with fisheye only because that is its best application for it in rollerblading out of the box... the kit lens is garbage, I sold mine within a week of buying the 7d, and Al is right, the cameras you are comparing are so different it is ridiculous. thank you for the lovely information on how to buy the camera cheap. I may use this for body only when I want a B-camera as the t2i and 7d are so very very similar. BUT for all you kiddies out there who aren't 15 and never had a job or pay their own bills.... Best Buy credit card with 0% financing for 12-36 months (depending on the current advertisement) will get you that camera for roughly the same price, but costing you no extra to pay it off over years. Plus they have L glass on their site if your trying to step your game up.
