View Full Version : Don Bambrick Fired From Razors ?

haha you just further proved my point by bringing an argument with someone on be-mag to facebook. haha did you think you were going to embarrass me or something? i'm probably making myself look like some punk ass kid, but i think you're making yourself look equally bad. i don't see the point of having an e-enemy, so i apologize for calling you immature and making fun of your shop name, i was completely out of line

I like tourques to much to do that.
just thinking the same thing hahahah

16.08.2010, 22:05
i think Brett is partly protecting his own interests with this reply haha considering he is much like bambrick in certain regards: he is a steeze master but does not stand a chance of winning the SDSF open
which brings up an interesting theme of this thread, and the julian bah thread, and the stephane alfano thread, and all the other times in recent history that a pro has been fired
the fundamental question is: what are the core elements of a pro and what are the relevant criteria for judging that person as a pro?
I see why you would think that, logical thought...But I stand by the idea that having a diverse and well rounded team is a part of how things work. I believe every blader who skates for a company should be asking himself "what do I do the best that will help benefit the image of the companies that support me." I dont go and work my ass off as park because I care to win a bunch of contests...I love street blading and that is where my satisfaction is gained in this sport! I love watching the park events and I think our pro skaters who kill park are so fricking talented its unreal, they deserve so much respect...but I love doing what I do and if they noticed me for what I was doing before, I don't feel any need to change it!
Don is the best and he will keep doing what he is doing and its going to be amazing to watch as always!

This is now a "Post your bad experiences with Bakerized" thread.
One time I ordered a pair of Con Artist button-ups ....
Stopped reading there. THere's strike number 1, 2, and 3.
Jesus Christ... Bakerized (whoever is operating this and the Facebook account), you just made an ass out of yourself and your shop by behaving like a butthurt middle school student when your previous customers called you out on your faults. Honestly, I probably wouldn't have ordered anything from you anyway, but after that childish display (as well as the "devil may care" attitude towards your customers), you can be guaranteed that when I need new gear, the word "Bakerized" won't come to mind.
What Ace Decade said was on-point; you are nothing in this industry as of yet, and talking shit on a messageboard, combined with your "business practices" weren't terribly wise moves. Maybe you should write a book, containing the secrets of your financial success, without even needing customers. If you're super lucky, mayby ABC Family will make a made-for-television movie, starring Tom Hanks as whoever the fuck you are.
Stopped reading there. THere's strike number 1, 2, and 3.
Agreed. Those shirts fit like shit and didn't look nearly as nice in person as they did in the online pictures. I got a black and a white one and I've worn the black one once in over a year and the white one is just going to sit in my closet because it looks awful. It's kinda off-white but instead of looking cool it looks like it's just a dirty plain white shirt.

Everyone knows that the most stylish skaters don't regularly skate contests, if at all. Don Bambrick was the only dude on Razors who's skating was worth watching. Don should upload his section in full-resolution as soon as he is able to obtain a copy. Razors doesn't want to support you? Jack their shit and give it to the people for free, because we got your back! Steez.

cause he's a true professional, never hit his girlfriend or anything like that. he does skip competitions occasionally though, but that shouldn't be too big of deal, razors won't mind that. oh wait..

it would have been nice if he were at the contest. i have skates with his name on them and i'm trying to sell them, but his now ex-coworkers did the job just fine. if i had a skate with my name on them i would be everywhere i could telling kids to buy them, but that's just me but i suck at skating so i don't.

His "pro skate" with "M1" Aragon wheels, team GC frames and Razors liners? Sick.
This just in. Farmer OFF of Vibralux Denim for skipping SDSF and never winning contests. Turns out all the touring and filming he does for us didn't amount to him selling out of his jeans. He just didn't fit in with his wild dressing style and unconventional street skating. People just didn't understand him. I wish he was a better talker so he could make it on jersey shore. Sometimes you just have to part ways though.

Most everytime I talk to people who are still in the industry from 10+ years or have left they are proud of what me and my team are doing. Welcome to the minority, but I ain't mad at ya.
I think you missed the point, and I can see why.....you're just as proud of being like them as they are of you.
SAVED, ANY DAY NOW KIDS. SEND MORE MONEY.
If a company had a tent set up to promote their product, I could see any rider having to do some promotion/autograph time even if they weren't skating the contest. Contracts need to be professional with compensation, responsibilities, and penalties spelled out.

at least don got a skate out of the deal, thats really all he could have hoped for. i dont think he was gonna get a skate number 2, not because he's not good enough just because they have so many riders to think about. it is what it is now, and im sure he is just stoked to even get a skate

WOW. People are so mis informed... let's look at everything logically.
If you work for a company, who just got you your first pro skate ever, and you have team mates killing themselves winning contests while wearing your pro skate promoting YOUR name... and you are at their house making fun of them like a slap to the face... you are always drunk (i've seen don at contests) apparently also came out with a below par section for a video... you get fired. On top of this i'm sure there was alot more stuff build up to lead to this... Razors keeps their pro team riders on for long ass time, and to drop don right after promoting his name like crazy with a pro skate is not something to be done over simply a video.
think about it.
there has to be more to the story. people leave companies all the time, but to get fired? means you fucked up. companies want to do good business, if you do your job = good business. bad business = you're not doing your job cause you think you're too cool for everything, which means you = get = fired.
don's a great skater with a huge career, im sure he'll do great wherever he goes. But it takes more then just tricks to make you a pro. Any professional athlete who doesn't complete all the terms of their agreement get docked or fired. This is no different.
Support Razors. Support Bambrick. Support the culture. keep rolling bitches

i mean dons skating is so raw but i just wanna put my little 2 cents in . i mean if you just have a pro skate released with your name on it and theres a big contest after a premiere of a section you just worked your ass of to put together, why wouldnt you wanna compete or less than that be at the contest to rock your skates and show kids why you are being paid to rollerblade or better yet to show kids how you like skating to look. none the less bambrick definately deserves to be pro whether its on razors or not

It's amazing the number of ppl bashing Razors over this. You think being really good = being sponsored and getting pro skates and not having to do shit else to help the company that pays you, gives you endless free shit, sends you to events, an amazing house to live in and gives you pro skates? I really hope the majority of skaters in our industry are not that dumb. You JUST had a section in the team video the day before, you JUST got a pro skate, if the owner of your sponsor wants you at a comp, you fucking go to the comp. If he wants you to compete, you compete. PERIOD. You are a representative of his company. Your job as a member of that team is to promote the company and that doesn't mean JUST being a good skater. You gotta show up at events that sometimes you may not want to be at, you gotta tell kids to buy your shit even if you don't want to talk to them. Look at the situation he was put in, would any of you guys fuck that up? It's really quite simple. If you skate for a company, the owner of that company is your boss and like any other boss, they can tell you what to do, even if that means doing shit you don't necessarily wanna do.

A boot company that has pro skaters should pay them enough for them to be able to have health coverage and enough money to pay rent and buy themselves food.
Why do you think we never have any real numbers about skate sales?
Cause the companies make a lot more money than they want us to think.
And I don't even want to go into the self destroying nature of our sport and the 'new sensation' mentality that actually creates a world and subculture/sport where the innovators and the best of the best, i.e. pro rollerbladers are paid less than manual labourers in developing countries.
Why Bambi was let go is less important than the fact that Razors will again find another dumb kid who will be more than happy to skate for free skates and being able to live in 'an amazing house'.
You know who lives in their employer's house? The help. The slaves.

You seem to be suggesting that Bambrick should be honored to have the privilege of having a section in their video rather than Razors being happy to have a skater as good as him behind their product. Video sections are the result of skaters working their ass off. Not sure if you've ever worked to put together a section, but it kind of sucks. I could totally understand someones desire to chill the fuck out the day after the section is released. Especially if that person is not a comp skater.
Who knows though. This is all hearsay, and I'm pretty sure Bambrick is going to land on his feet. Pardon the pun.

I truly doubt he finished his section the day before it premiered. He's been on tour skating and all. Besides, can't tell me dood is too wore out to SHOW UP at a contest. You can claim Razors should be "honored" to have him on their team and him have a section in their video or whatever, but the bottom line is ppl buy the skates b/c they like the skates, not b/c they have a skater's name on them. Razors could make nothing but TEAM skates and they'd sell. If it isn't Bambrick getting a pro skate, it'll be some1 else and it'll sell. He lost out, not Razors. There are plenty of skaters out there on the come up and this will just make guys like McCleod, Howard, and Bah bigger parts of the company. Hell after Dre's amazing section, he may get the next skate.
That's just my view on it. I really like Bambrick's skating so it sucks all around, but I can see Andy's side of it.

I think that if he's pro for the company the least he could have done is show up to the contest (even if he wasn't competing). However, there has to be more to it, because firing him for missing just one comp seems a little ridiculous.

Whether he shows up at comps or not, the 324 comments in this thread suggest that Razors just fired a pretty relevant pro from their team.

nope. he should be skating at a boring ass contest. it's called promotion, when you have a product with your name on it, you should be ready to river dance on command when someone wants to spend money on your name. having a company behind you, on any level, is cause enough to do whatever they ask you to do. if it's too much, then fuck off.

After a few long conversations with inside industry heads, the truth about why Don was let go was revealed to me.
I didn't want to write about it on here because it is really none of my business, but after long thought I decided I would disclose why he was let go.
The reason I have decided to disclose it although it is none of my business is because it gives crystal clear perspective to both sides of the story and it will end a lot of this e-bickering and I am confident that it will help both the images of Don as well as razors.
That being said I have chosen to tell what I know
Apparently it was found out that Don's girl friend has, in fact, sucked another guy's dick before.
I wish everyone involved prosperity moving forward.

That's just my view on it. I really like Bambrick's skating so it sucks all around, but I can see Andy's side of it.
Names on skates dont mean anything? is that why shima had 7.5 pro models from razors? i dont give the slightest shit nowadays, but when i was a grom pro skates were more desireable than the team models. i remember when the spizer thrones came out being SO pumped and working a terrible job detassling corn to obtain them because that was the only job i could get at 13. definitely makes a difference in sales.

Upon placing a thermometer in her mouth, her body temperature was found to be 88.6 degrees; 10 degrees too chill.
And we all can see who Razors sided with.
Its really, really sad how many "professionals" think being a professional means nothing.
it's because they are so low life and punk rock....

Great! So Razors have made their most recent skate release out-of date AND they've made their not yet released video out of date too. How will firing Don NOW help sell more of his pro skates? Wouldn't it make better business sense to-
1. wait until they release their '2011' skates before firing someone with their name on a current product.
2. wait until the video is released. By firing him now it means 'Game Theory' won't be an accurate representation of their team on release unless they cut Don's section (which in my view would make them fully deserve all the hate they've been getting over this.)
*controversial opinion warning..... cry about it*
Razors kinda suck to be honest. Anyone who followed skating in 2000 may remember It was Jon Elliott who gave Razors a new lease of life as team manager by turning them from one of the worst performing companies in blading into the respected company they are today. His input into the Superflats as well as his own pro-skates and Shimas first pro skates set the blueprint for every skate mold Razors now use (even 'murdas' genesys). Anyone who saw 'uncloned' will remember them as the 'Rock n thrash' skate company, with a pretty-much all street team. Since Elliott and Shima left to create Nimh, Razors have molded themselves as some fake pimpin' gangster ass, bottle-poppin' FP wannabies, despite making their name off guys who more resemble Bambrick and his attitude to skating than anyone else on their team (though Murda was skating Razors back then).
Razors could go out of business for all I care, the reason Razors have so many unsold Bambricks is because the skate market is swamped... There are not nearly enough rollerbladers around to justify seven skate manufacturers survival. I'd sooner see Valo as the top of our industry and see Nimh survive, rather than Razors squeaky-clean, yet 'oh so gangsta' bullshit..... (as I said earlier the two guys who gave razors a new lease of life are the Nimh guys, who deserve more security and support from our industry than Mac n Andy do)
The more I hear about pro's needing more 'professional, business/salesmen attitudes' makes me want to yell "Fuck rollerblading" and start 'Aggressive skating' again.
Respect to Don and hope he ends up where he needs to be (Nimh mufuckas) and respect to AJ for being the best dude in rolling and for never taking what we do (chuck ourselves at obstacles for the love of it) too seriously.

If you skate for a company, the owner of that company is your boss and like any other boss, they can tell you what to do, even if that means doing shit you don't necessarily wanna do.
i understand what your trying to say but this is not skateboarding. These guys are not getting millions like sheckler and the other top heads from their sponsers. if that were the case than they probably should go to a comp. This is how its always been for us, you street skate, you put out raw street sections and leave the contests up for the park skaters. you dont see usd kicking billy oneil off the team because he doesnt skate contests do you? same goes for a lot of other bladers too. razors just pulled a tom hyser and rollerblade company bullshit move.

I never said it was skateboarding nor did I say rollerbladers were getting paid millions. My point was, getting paid to skate and getting a free place to live (that is incredible) is better than not getting paid and having to work a real job like most of us rollerbladers do and most sponsored rollerbladers do for that matter. We don't know the whole story. Billy has nothing to do with this really. If Andy wanted Don at the SDSF Open, skating or not, he has to be there, period. Andy is his boss and skating is, essentially, his job. If your boss tells you to come into work at a certain time and you don't show up, what happens? You'll most likely get canned. It has nothing to do with him competing. Dre didn't compete, he didn't get fired, but he was there repping his company going from table to table, skater to skater, talking to whoever wanted to chat. There were questions of why Razors kept Dre on the team b/c he hadn't put much content out there in a while (despite his Game Theory section being amazing) and it became obvious to me why over the weekend. Dre is a real good dood and treats everybody with respect and reps the shit outta Razors. Ultimately it's a business and repping your sponsor is the most important part to them. If you're gonna help them sell skates (or whatever product they are selling), then you're doing your job.

It does not matter. If you are a pro skater, you are well aware way ahead of time of what the rollerblading community can offer you as far as living, money ect, whether it's millions or a couple hundreds, so that's your choice if you decide to look at rollerblading as a career.. Not to mention Andy did more for his riders then most of the companies out there, like deciding to cop a big house in Cali and allow his top pros to live there and still pay them on top of that... I'm sorry Don was " too worn out " to show up at the comp and promote his skate, even though all his other teammates were there who also just got done filming sections for the video like ummm, Aragon. Who works twice as much as Don and actually places top at comps. So that whole wanting to chill out argument is bullshit. Fact is, if your boss asks you to do something you either do it or deal with penalties. Also to the people saying you shouldn't have to show up to contests or promote if you don't want too obviously don't remember what it was like when they were young and first getting into skating, meeting a pro to younger kids is so important to them and leave more of an impact then any section from a video. I 100% stand behind Andy and razors decision on this one because maybe pros will wake up and take their career more serious and think about their actions, I also wish Don the best of luck and am sure he already probably has another boot sponsor and its all old news to him now.

Losing your professional status in rollerblading is equivalent to getting fired from Burger King.
it's not equivalent - working at Burger King rakes in way more cash than being a pro blader.

I feel like this was directed at me. Don't use quotation marks unless you are pulling a direct quote. it is misleading and allows you to lose sight of the point you are arguing against. At no point in my comment did I say he was "too worn out" to show up to the competition. I was commenting on the amount of effort that goes into filming for a video. The original poster didn't seem to understand that there is work involved.

He quoted shaneschommer and commented on the quote. He then seemed to move on to a different discussion after the ellipses. It should be noted that nowhere in the post he originally quoted are the words "too worn out" either. I assumed he moved on to comment on a statement I had made earlier as he does come close to taking a direct quote from me when he refers to "that whole wanting to chill out argument". Not sure why this got you angry enough to call me a "dumb fuck," but that's fine.

Being asked to attend an event is the minimum that should be expected. It's not an unreasonable request that is beyond the "pay grade" of a pro (or any sponsored rider for that matter). It's not like they told him that he was required to compete and place in order to keep his job.

Being asked to attend an event is the minimum that should be expected. It's not an unreasonable request that is beyond the "pay grade" of a pro (or any sponsored rider for that matter). It's not like they told him that he was required to compete and place in order to keep his job.
Id give my right nad to goto a comp
No matter how little someone is paid for a job, i must be stating the obvious to say that you are not going to get a pay raise by not being a model employee.

I like how some people think that the pros should jump through flaming hoops and off buildings and shit when their sponsors say so.These guys are making shit wages.I see all these points where people say if you get paid to do a job you should do it.Well if that job pays just over minimum wage and youre scraping to get by I dont think youre gonna jump when they snap your fingers.Dont act like any of you guys have never played hookie from work.
Yeah I'm sure life is tough when you have to rollerblade as your job and you're living in a mansion for free. Think about why people work. Think about most of the reason we work for. We work to pay bills, food, and to put a roof over our heads. I'm sure all that shit was paid for at the Razors house. Those guys have it made. Skate hard and rep your company. That's really all sponsors will ask for. Isn't that what most of us want to do anyway? From the time we learn about sponsors n shit, we wanna skate hard and get sponsored/rep our sponsor. It's not like he's being asked to do something wack. Just rollerblade and show up at events to rep your sponsor (and your new skate). He wasn't being asked to "jump through flaming hoops".

Yeah but we're not talking about Damien Wilson are we? We're talking about Don and the razors team. Did you even watch the video? I'd be fucking chuffed to live in a house like that for free, bills paid, etc and all i have to do is rep my skate and sponsors. AND they get a salary. Don't forget, nobody chose their careers for them. Everybody knows from day what pro rollerblading is. Looks like Razors actually do good by their employees.

Damien doesn't skate for Razors. And I brought this up in an earlier post...the guys in that house have it real well b/c most sponsored skaters still have to have real jobs to maintain their lifestyle. And no, I don't think rollerbladers live like skateboarders, but hell you saw the Razors house and I've seen the way that particular team has it. They're in a pretty damn good position. Probably a better situation than most skate sponsors can offer....

The help. The slaves.

Yeah getting paid to skate, getting paid for your pro skates, getting a paid mansion to live in, getting flown to countless states and countries to skate = being a slave. How does being a pro rollerblader even compare to being a slave? I agree about the health insurance but you gotta think about it from a business standpoint. You know how expensive it would be to provide insurance to ppl in that business? That's just me thinking about it logically, but ultimately I agree on that part. These guys put their ass on the line to make your company what it is, provide them with the proper medical insurance. As far as being paid enough to pay for rent and food, WHAT RENT AND FOOD? Factor in whatever Don made and estimate the cost of rent, food, and other bills onto that. That's essentially what he was making to rollerblade. The money he makes is for whatever he wants to spend it on. He doesn't have to worry about buying skates, wheels, bearings, clothes, plane tickets, rent, bills, food, any of that shit. Sure he may have to pay for a meal here and there when he's out, but at home his shit is paid for, if he's on tour his shit is paid for. I really don't know why ppl can't see it from Razors side. Dood was in a great situation and fucked it up.

Because it's belittling and degrading to put them in a house like monkeys. The companies should pay them enough for the skaters to be able to afford decent housing by their own.
Business standpoint? It's downright slavery.
However, if he did sign a contract that stipulates his obligations and he didn't abide by them, then I have no problem with him getting fired.
Also, he was old enough to read his contract with comprehension and he could have not signed it if he didn't like the terms.

It compares to being a slave in the way that they're working to make another man rich. I'm all for pro skaters being more professional, but I do understand that it is very hard work and for the money they're paid it really isn't worth it unless they really love what they do. Andy exploits this love and never pays the skaters enough to break their bonds and change the status quo.
Yeah, I feel so bad for those guys that gotta live in that house. Rollerbladers should be able to live like skateboarders.

Yeah but think about it, most of us work and help make the heads of our businesses rich. You work at McDonald's you're helping make the franchise owner rich, you work construction you're help making the owners rich, it really doesn't matter where you work, the bottom line is most ppl are "the help" and are being paid by a guy that makes way more money than they do and probably will ever. Even actors and athletes are working to make franchise owners and studios rich.

Kind of like practically every single American who works a typical job for a big corporation owned by somebody. If I get a job selling PC's, am I Bill Gate's slave? I'm working to make him rich right? With that logic, pretty much anybody who isn't self employed is a slave.

Yes.
But we're comparing the industries. Top 5 in any field should be able to negotiate terms and get paid real wealth, as opposed to being hired help. The real question is who can our Top 5 negotiate with? There's just one man in America, and he wants to keep it that way at all cost.....even if it means holding rollerblading back.

while I agree that pro's bladers are underpaid compared to other "alternative" sports, I would drop my 50k/year job in a heartbeat and travel the world to do what I love with little or no pay if someone gave me the offer. And if my sponsor wanted to skate at a contest twice a month I would do it. From the standpoint of someone who really is a corporate slave making someone else rich, getting free meals and travel to skate and get drunk all the time in a sweet ass house with other skaters seems pretty fucking awesome. Fuck, all he had to do was make an appearance at SDSF, he could have placed 30th and kept his job.

And for the most part the top five still need an extra source of income. I see the point of somebody not in the top ten rollerblading pros not making 5k a month, but what these people get paid is a joke.

I'm not going to feel bad if they let themselves be exploited. These guys would still be skating even if they weren't on Razor's team. Also, there are obviously a lot of people who skate Razors who aren't on the team who are also very good. To me, the person who is sick who happens to skate Razors carries more influence to me about the product than somebody who is good, but also happens to be paid to skate those skates.

did you see the house that he was living in? it was seriously a fucking mansion and i dont know anyone who would complain about that.
P.S. how can a rollerblade company pay their riders decent salary , i.e. 40k or up when they barely make that?
Village Idiot
18.08.2010, 10:21
I am sure that the mansion in san diego cost less than 40 grand :)
And that's why skate companies always hide sales figures, to make kids like you think they're barely scraping by.
I would much rather live in a decent 1 bedroom apartment by myself or with my girlfriend then live in a mansion with five or how many other people that just randomly show up.
Years and years ago, the ignition guys lived together in a big apartment above the skateshop in bad reichenhall in germany. It was fine and dandy for a year, but after that it wasn't so nice anymore.
