im a little bit over my HV-30 and want to get something that will take sweet pics with possibility of shooting the occasional clip.

A friend of mine just purchased a 7D last week, i had a little go and it was sweet. Compared to an HV-30 its a little on the pricey side, is there anything as good or similar but slightly cheaper?

Yes, go for the Canon T2i or the new Canon 60D. In the US the T2i goes for about $700 and the 60D goes for $1100 (body only prices). I think the 60D is going to probably drop a hundred or two in the next couple months though. For photo and video the 60D has a few extra perks that are nice, but the T2i will do well too if you're on a tight budget. Also remember that with an SLR the body is only part of the package- you're gonna need/want a few lenses, a mic for good audio, a handle for filming lines/fisheye, memory cards, a good tripod and some other assorted things. You can definitely get started with a kit lens but you're going to want/need the other stuff almost immediately, so if you have the cash now you might as well get it all at once.

yeah I had a look at the 60d when I watched my friend buy his 7D, I was thinking of starting off with the body and one lense and going from there. Thanks again for your help AL

i really want to stick with Canons, my hv-30 has been a trooper and I've heard nothing but good things from ppl with them. After reading a few reviews and articles im really leaning towards the 60d

people... he obviously wants a camera that can shoot video, so stop suggesting ones that can't.

I got the 60d last week and I'm loving it so far. Definetely a big step up from my HF-100 - so good to be able to use different lenses. I was tired of having to use a crappy wide angle or fisheye converter nearly all the time because of the lack of wide angle on the HF-100. Those suck so much. I am totally amazed at the quality of the Walimex/Samyang fisheye lens compared to the Opteka fishy I used on the HF-100. Go for it!
