OAKLAND -- A man who fell from a radio station antenna tower early Thanksgiving morning likely was stargazing from the high perch, his mother said Monday.

Steven Douglas Tassell, 25, of Antioch, was found by KPFA radio station staff members early Thursday, police said. Tassell fell from the 300-foot tower onto a small building.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:42 a.m., said Mike Yost, the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau supervising coroner investigator. Paramedics were called to the scene after radio station staff members discovered him. Investigators have made no indication that the death was a suicide or a homicide.

Police said Tassell was alone on the tower and no one saw him fall. It was not known exactly how far he fell or the exact time of the fall.

Toni Tassell, the victim's mother, said she thought her son had climbed the tower to look at the stars and think.

"I think he was just out there enjoying the view," she said. Her son may have visited the Grizzly Peak spot before, she added. He was a nature lover who spent time outdoors in-line skating and looking at stars through binoculars.

"It was an accident," she said. "I always tried to tell my kids you have to think about what can happen."
Steven Tassell has an older brother, Brian, 28, who was out of town at the time of his brother's death, she said.

University in San Francisco, but was not currently in school, his mother said. He lived alone in Antioch and was in the process of fixing up a small apartment that he had rented. He had been at his parents' house Wednesday night and told his mother he planned to spend Thanksgiving at his grandmother's house in Antioch with family.

Toni Tassell said her son was a free spirit and gifted artist. "He was a loving son and he was so sweet," she said.

A spokesman from the coroner's office said Steven Tassell died of multiple blunt injuries. Ahmad Anderson, KPFA's interim general manager, was not available for comment Monday. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Friday at Higgins Chapel, 1310 A St., Antioch.

Damn, that is really sad. It is kinda scary/sobering considering how many towers and balconies I have climbed around on and nearly slipped a few times myself.

I don't get the message. Doesn't it seem that more people die looking at hospital ceilings rather than falling from radio towers? That's a weird death, and of course I feel sad that it happened. Always a lesson.

I believe that was in response to someone origianally asking if its weird to think that the way he died wasnt a bad way to go.
