Real quick question regarding the Canon ef 35mm 2/f lens

Does it make noise?

I was using a older lens a few nights ago from a friend and my 7d picked up so much noise from that blasted thing. Granted it was a zoom lens, just needing to know because I'm buying it right after work before I fly over to Michigan for the holidays.

having a shitty slow zoom lens will make the camera increase the ISO in order to achieve exposure, this is probably why you had a lot of noise.

The faster the lens, the less noise. F2 is pretty decent.

That being said, noise isn't a lens issue, its a light and setting issue. Low light+ high ISO= lots of noise, good light+low ISO = less noise.

Let me refrain my question.

Does it MAKE noise? IE, can the mic pick up the sound from focusing?

The answer is Yes, and it's a lot. Fuck.

My 50mm 1.4 doesn't pick up any noise (sound) from the mics at all when I'm focusing. It's too late now. Thanks for the fast response.

I just bought a Canon 28mm 1.8 USM and it's so good, sharp, solid, and silent. Pretty much any USM is silent and anything that isn't USM or L series is usually noisy.

Thanks Al, but i believe nemo is right on this. My 50mm f/1.4 (which is only 50 bucks more expensive) is probably a usm. I never once heard the focusing in my on board mic. But it's really no big deal.

It just feels... Literally, cheaper. Like the focus ring is made cheaply or it needs to wear in. It's also kinda awkward. I've been shootig manual with the 50 1.4 for blading for almost a year and I feel like I mastered it. I can pridict where the focus needs to be even when I stomp it down to 1.4. This 35 is kinda harder for me, but it's new. I think I'll use this mainly for family shit and non-skating shit.

The problem here is: certain lenses produce noise while focusing even when AF is off. Take the EF 50mm 1.8 for exmple: makes horrible scraping noise while fosusing...

This was what I was referring too. Just doing manual focus made those scraping noises (sounds). I almost never auto focus during filming. All manual.
