View Full Version : Lighting Set up? Need a Seasoned photographers perspective
So I have been taking photos for a while now and finally I am looking to go for some fill lights to add to my style (been doing mostly natural). So anyways I was sure about buying the cheap yet useful Alien Bees set up until my brother approached me about taking photos of skating with him and I didn't really think I would get back into doing action sports... so now I want some opinions about this. Should I stick with alien bees with a slow recycle life and possibly not so high shutter sync or look into some speed lights or perhaps one of the Quantum Q Flash T-5DR with turbo battery? I am

Alien Bee's are great flashes. What are you using them for? You will also need to invest in a vagabond or something that allows you a power source if your using your flashes outside of the studio environment. Otherwise just go with speedlite's or sunpaks or vivitars or Nikon SB flashes you can buy rechargeable batteries which can be expensive but cheap at the same time. Do you have cyber syncs or pocket wizards to trigger your remote flashes?
The recycle time on the bees can be good depending which bee you get and how strong of light you need. If you want full power your recycle time will be a lot slower. The Quantum Q Flash T-5DR with turbo battery is a great flash but like i said depending on really what your using them for depends on how much you want to invest into your gear. I personally buy gear that helps me pay for it and turn a profit. Shit is so expensive nowadays its almost a waste to buy something when it doesn't help you make a buck. Hopefully what i said helped you in some way.
Thanks Brad it really does, I really should of broke it down a bit more and explain what my plans are. First off I agree I know I would need the vagabond pack which are pretty sweet. I am looking to do mostly portraits or people, cars, and action. Far as my ideal Alien bee set up I either want to go with single b800's with their alien triggers, or the Einstein Head and use buy a variety of umbrellas and modifiers to see what works best. On the other hand I could buy some pocket wizards and use my Cannon speed lite 430ex II. I am just wondering which would be best if I had to use continuous shooting? or maybe I should just reserve that for natural lighting and a fast lens. How ever what you said makes a lot of sense about investing into things that will make money back. I totally agree with that so my concerns are not too great with how it will handle action sports just wanted some inputs. I most likely will be making my money through portraits or at the race track (not using my flash set up) selling per pictures to the drivers.
P.S. I like your Port brad nice shots

Thanks for the checking out my work. Sorry for the delay I don't always check be-mag.
I personally started with sunpaks and nikon sb flashes and now i have 5 alien bees flashes 3 800's and 1 400 and a ring flash. My suggestion for you would be start with 800 with a beauty dish or a medium size softbox and the vagabond. Good luck to you
