I want to spend less than a grand on a tower if possible, but I want it to be a quality product...
build it, you want intel you could build a pretty baller ass machine for about a grand. Go amd you can build a decent one for autocad for like 600 bucks.
I built an i7 intel tower with 8 gigs of ram a big ass hard drive and blue ray player, big chilled case and beefy cpu cooler for like 1k.

Do you think amd will be sufficient or is it best to just go intel?

AMD will be sufficient if you go with a Phenom x4, however, might as well get a i5 or i7. It's not that big of a price difference.
I built a very nice rig for under 1k.
If you want the specs let me know.

listen to someone who knows what the fuck they are talking about not these FAGGOTS!
Um go with NEWEGG.COM
1. i7 2.66 mhz desktop processor if you can find it and overclock
2. Evga boards are best ... they have amazing costumer support and super easy overclocks
3. Patriot 24gbs of ram is only $338.00 worth the purchase, but buy in 3x 4gb kits a.k.a 2 12gb kits
4. Graphics card ... go nvidia ... ATI AND AMD have HORRIBLE FAGGOTS for costumer support and if you have any issues your screwed ...
Rule of thumb is Patriot, Intel , and Evga... you will get the best possible set up if you do it this way ... make sure you get a board with SATA III and usb 3.0 should be $200
