Ordered a set of Carbons from Grindhouse to play around with. Expect full Remedyz nerd analysis in a couple of weeks. My ankles are getting sore thinking about the lack of flex in the cuff but I figured they would be worth a try. I think they work out to be cheaper ordering from Europe anyway.

I promised I would sell old skates off before getting new skates... Whoops. I'm pretty bad with skate technology hype. The last batch of skates since the first UFS Remz have been very disappointing to my feet and ankles. So let's hope for CHANGE baby.

I'm thinking of this more as an experiment and less of a full on commitment to a new skate. I've been loving my Remz lately but I figured such a hyped skate is worth a try.

KRBNZ thoughts? Who's on the fence because they are enjoying their current skates?

I cannot wait for full Remedyz comparison...

I am currently skating my 00 Remedyz again...super tempted to buy carbons but I may be moving to Washington so money will be slim :(

I lucked out with a good tax return and some backlogged GST cheques (Canada government sales tax). Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to give into my skate whore/consumer slave ways.

I also just got my black and red OG Remedyz back in order with some new classic fifty-50 frames from Skatestop. I've been meaning to take them to an industrial sewing place to get them fixed up. They need some fixes. Not sure what to do about the hole in the backslide area or the rips on the inside of the liner.

I have a lot of setup options this summer. I wonder what is going to win my heart and feet?

For the rips in the liner I just placed yoga mat cut-outs where the missing padding is. For the BS area you could try to cut a hole out into the shape of a different company BS plate. You could also take the shell of an older skate and cut out a little area and shape it with heat so it fits the Remedyz bs area then either attach it on the outside or the inside.

If I move to WA I will probably be in BC every once and a while. I have a some friends that live in Surrey and White Rock, I could probably take the Sky Train to Vancouver if you would be down to skate.

carbonara ai funghi!

please make "a day in the life of joey (the day i got my carbons)" edit.
ever since trying on a pair at winterclash i thought about buying some.
what prevented me from doing it is that my size L fiziks wouldn't fit and that i lost my job in the meantime.
that, and i wanted to see what people who had to pay $300 for these skates instead of getting them for free thought about them after skating them for 6 months or so.

totally unrelated...

will there be a "perspectives on mushroom blading pt. 2"?

Zacharias, thank you for the tips and fixes on the skates. I'm in Kamloops now which is about 4 hours from Vancouver. Maybe on a skating trip there I can meet up with you one of these days. You can film with us for future volumes of videos. It's less filming and mostly fuckin' around.

toe-bee and jomu, "perspectives on mushroom blading pt. 2" would be all of Latimer's 2nd section of words... But the other part of it would be me going through A LOT of videos. There are so many names and tricks for pt.2 that I would have to be extra selective. It's been too daunting to think about. But hopefully before 2010.

Maybe I'll make an edit with a lot of "actual tricks" in it... to go through what "real" skating feels like in them. Ill make sure my swagger and steez are ill and tight just for you guys. I'll save the avant-garde for later. Seriously though i'm not sure about an edit... But maybe? I know these babies are going to feel weird for the first week or so. Gotta figure out my setup before a big trip in July.

I'm also crossing my fingers that my fiziks don't break this summer. Especially whil doing stair rides.

to me my carbons felt weird the first 20 min of skating them but than i fell in love!i never got used to a pair of skates that fast!!! and ive been having issues with new skates all my life. my feet would die all the time when i got new skates but not in the carbons...if u would ask me they definatly live up to the hype!!!

They are in town right now. I just went to track them down but no luck. I got them sent to my parents house(not where I live) so i'm crossing my fingers they just leave them at the door today. If not I will be playing the delivery notice game and may not have them for a couple of days.

Remember I paid full price for these babies... So what I do decide to write in here will be honest and hopefully help people decide if it's worth the investment. Expect some kind of a write up here in less than a week.

Right now i'm loving my Remz and they are loving me... But this is a worthy experiment just to see if I can get that OG Remz feel from the skate. In my imagination they aren't flexing very well at the moment. But i'll let you know how that goes.

The biggest reason why im excited for this review. If they're like og remz and not like stiff deshi im gonna cop some.

not like stiff deshi

It's funny that you say that. I've heard complaints all around the spectrum of Deshi being too big, too small, to flexy, too stiff, too heavy, and too light.

The funny thing is that you never hear anybody say they are "just right" in any aspect. They either suck for some reason or they suck again for the complete opposite reason.

Update:

- I skated them twice today and I can't figure out if I love them or hate them.
- They feel NOTHING like OG Remedyz
- They skate way better without the shock absorber but need some kind of shock absorber because they are so rigid.
- Twitchy is by far the best word used to describe how they feel

More updates soon.

Update:

Keep in mind that what I enjoy for skating doesn't really transfer well into a skate review or suit many peoples preferences. But maybe I can give you an idea of how the skates feel for just rolling around...

Size 10 carbon. Medium fifty-50 cores with 8 face wheels flat. Skated three times. They fit my foot really well.

Carbon fail... Not a big fan of the way the skates felt or how the cuff (or lack of) was designed. Even if they were to get broken in... I thought the carbon in the ankle area was really restrictive and uncomfortable. Felt like there was a hard cylinder just above the ankle bone. Kind of like a carbon prison. I'm sure it breaks in...I really didn't like how there was no flex at all. The bottom of the skate felt great but the top is a fail for my ankles. I already sold them to a lucky customer who will (possibly) like them.

Anybody who wants to relive their OG remedyz days will be really disappointed. They feel nothing like a Remedy. Sure they look great and they are light. But they just don't feel like freedom of feet. The Carbon that goes up the sides is just too stiff and unresponsive to ankle movements for it to feel like a Remedy. Sure the skates are low cut and somewhat mobile for the ankle. But don't expect a Remedy feel.

Put my remz back on and they felt a lot more organic and mobile. It's all about the flex and the soft feel for my feet. I think what a lot of people hate about remz is what I love. Lot's of flex and more control in the footbed. Like a comfy ankle brace with wheels. Carbons felt more like an ice skate boot with a soul plate, which in theory... Should feel really good but it feels nothing like freedom of feet. I'll take a bit more skate volume and liner slop over weird cuff area.

Soul plate was a bit big but it slid really nice and locked very easily. The skates had a great feel for grinding but I don't think the soul needed to be so big. Something more streamlined with the boot would have felt a bit better for my taste. Royale tricks need some proper bending which is good. No real complaints about the soul or royale. Simple plate that slides fast. Again with the cuff area of the skate - I thought grinds felt really good in the bottom part of the skate. But the lack of flex in the ankle area just felt a bit weird. Solid locking and grinding feel but just not enough flex. 99% of people will fucking love the way these skates grind but for some reason the extra flex in the remz just feels better and works more with the ankle.

The skates felt much better without the shock absorber but the v-cut in the back doesn't go as deep as Remz so there was a digging feeling in the back of the ankle. I'm sure it softens up but the remz v-cut allows for a much better ankle mobility and I found the toe-point factor in these skates a bit disappointing. Maybe this gets better over time or you could just get used to the shock absorber. What I always like to test in a skate is if I can point my toe and rotate my ankle in a circle using all the weird ankle muscles. You can kind of do it in Carbons but it kind of digs in some areas.

If anyone has ever gone ice skating and tried to do tricks in their skates. That's exactly how the carbons feel... Once again I think AL's description as "twitchy" really nails the way the skates feel. Something in the top area of the skate just doesn't feel right.

I think a lot of people are going to skate REALLY well in these skates and love them to death but they just weren't for me. I would recommend them to anyone wanting something light, slim and different. They are responsive and grind well but need more work in the cuff department. My favorite thing about these skates is there is no liner to slip around in the skate.

On another note... I'm crossing my fingers the 0901 has some kind of a feature that holds the liner in the skate better. If I'm really lucky there will be a lace up liner.

I know skating them three times is a bit of a cop out but I really didn't like them. I've skated many skates and I always go back to Remz. They are just more fun for me....

Just to add for anyone who might be confused by me saying flex to many times I'll sum it up:

The skates DO flex a lot above the carbon. But where the Carbon starts in the ankle area they barely flex at all and it kind of digs in.

That might make more sense.

really nice review
you got into the stuff most people wouldnt bother mentioning. :)

but i do have say, i recommend you try some in a year, like a pair that has been totally softened up and broken in.
i skated ones that were totally trashed and soft, they were the best feeling ever.
i really disliked them when they were brand new. no flex or control what so ever.

or maybe eve just try lacing it all the way up and not using the buckle, that was kind of better but who know, i didnt give that a real try with the brand new pair.

They do feel better and better as time goes by. I understand where you're coming from totally. I was kind of dissappointed at first until I skated them for a little bit and felt them start to soften up and all that jazz. Then I was like :D 8) .

Have you ever heard the expression "Don't beat a dead horse"? I think it's relevant in more than one way in this situation.

I think he should have given them more of a chance also. But since he sold them it doesn't really matter at this point.

I felt exactly the same way about the skates my first couple of sessions, but they have changed mostly for the better with some more time breaking them in.
