View Full Version : Dismissing a skate flick as 'shit' after only one viewing.
Just a thought....
I recently lent my copy of Traitement to one of the guys I skate with. Another one of my lot also borrowed Charging from someone else (cool story etc...)
Both of them watched the respective DVD once and dismissed them both as either 'shit' (Traitement) or 'boring' (Charging). Despite me telling them both to watch them a couple more times to let it grow on them neither were having it.
Now personally I find that the various nuances of todays style of skating take a little longer to appreciate than a single watch, unlike flicks from yesteryear where rail/gap hammers etc were the order of the day and tended to provide instant gratification. As an example, it took me 3-4 watches of Traitement and Charging at least before I really started to appreciate the technicality and skill involved in many of the clips.
Kind of pissed me off a little that the two guys I skate with didn't give the two flicks a real chance, so I thought I would rant lol. Anyone else feel the same about todays skate flicks often taking longer to appreciate?

I got one word for you: eye candy
What aspect did they not like? For me the filming is a huge deal.
I watched Charging and thought it was good, but I have no desire to ever watch it again.
Charging is good if you watch it in profile mode, otherwise it gets redundant. The only videos I've been able to watch all the way through lately have been Sideshow Rodeo and Regardless.

I think teenagers are so impressionable, the more you watch a shit video the more power you give it to change your mind.
if you need to watch a video three times to begin to like it.... it sucks.

Skate videos in general just bore me now. I like watching a short edit with all the best clips for free more than watching a 40 minute video with the best tricks spread out that I had to pay for.

Same here. When I watched leading the blind, or Words... I thought those videos sucked huge balls. it wasn't until i had a bunch of other people tell me how to shape my opinion until I began to like them.

It progressed from tricks beginner and lower level skaters wouldn't dream of trying to stuff they can already do.

Lol, not quite what I was getting at, but fair point.
See, those two videos blew my mind the first time I watched them. Carrying on the original example, Traitement and Charging didn't have the same instant wow factor for me, but I have come to love both of them after numerous watches.
I find that the difficulty of the skating portrayed in a lot of recent videos is more subtle and often takes a few views to appreciate.
Having said that, I got Regardless yesterday and pretty much creamed my pants at Jacuzzi's section the very first time I watched it so........

Yep. A good video has replay value AND impresses you the first time you see it. I can't watch something three times if watching it once wasn't very enjoyable to begin with.

Skate videos are a preferential item to begin with. Aside from people who tend to hate just to hate. There is obviously going to be alot of subjectivity in the reviews and opinions from those who view the way our sport is presented. everyone is struck differently and thats fine...good even. Variety of opinion is good within our sport. This is true in both our videos and our opinions of what a good video is. Skating is so awesome to me that I can find almost all our high class videos made by the bigger names in our industry to be enjoyable. I just love seeing new blading and knowing that to the filmers, editors and skaters, of the video i am watching believe it is special! something they thought was even more worthy than an online video or edit...something worthy of making a hardcopy...that means they put hard work into it and alot of care went to what they were doing...i love that.
it progressed from true spins on drop rails to true spins on drop curbs.
