When you're on your toes you're more agile. That is just a guess. The origination is probably from the transition from rec/hockey skates to aggressive skates. It's easier/better to push from that foot position and thus move yourself. It would be the same principle of using a block when you take off from the start line of a foot race.

I don't know if it has any recurring uses in aggressive skating but I think that the foot being on an angle raised above the royale groove is more comfortable than doing a royale on a flat foot (I would be referencing my skating on TRS skates compared to my raised heel Razor cult skates). It seems to cause pain on the side of my foot, if you know what I mean.

but couldn't you just as easily raise the heel with a footbed and create more shock absorption
it just seems to make more sense

Skates where not originally designed with UFS in mind so there was no need for a flat boot.

I agree with Alex on this royales are more comfortable in raised heel skates.

I think Salomon had the best idea...make the skate feel like a raised heel but keep the boot flat.

i dislike raised heel boots cause of the lack of heel pad
i like my heel to be up about an inch
so
like zach said, salomon got it right

Mahmoud is talking about boots with a raised heel (like a Cult or M12).

Alex is talking about heel rise, which is just the measurement of how much higher your heel sits than your ball/forfoot, in relation to the ground.

Boot shells with raised heels are generally rec/fitness deisgns (whic don't need/want shock absorbers but still need heel rise) adapted for aggressive use, or a really really old aggressive design (Classic Thrones or Dirks for instance).

So we've all agreed that heel rise is good, but it should be with a shock pad like Salomon's? Meeting adjourned.

Yes I agree the flat boot design with heel wedge is best, but Salomon could have improved on their design by offering an optional hard plastic wedge and maybe half-height wedges. I always liked the lower heel in K2s, and for tranny skating the Salo heel pad robs your pump.....but Salos have that locating pin, so you can't do much else.

Yeah I wish the Salo heelpad was a little slimmer.

Jakeordie have you ever v-cut K2's?

i think salomon is perfect
but i used a remz heel pad for awhile and that worked great
just cut a little hole in it and that held it in
on older ones i had i just chisled that pin off and used a kizer heel pad
but the shape of the shell is made for a thick heel pad
so they fit much better with the stock pads

Remz liners have that heel wedge pocket deal, AWESOME IDEA! I'm tempted to cut the pin out of my Salos & use the Remz heel wedge with the liner, but haven't manned up yet.

The plastic (or at least firmer rubber) heel pads/wedges, I can see working just fine, although there isn't a large enough demand for them to be a viable option. A half-height wedge, though... that'd hugely mess up the fit of the skate, the height of the cuff, etc.

As for using other heel pads in Salomons... the Salo pads are actually a proper anatomical fit (not to mention a perfect fit in the shell), those other pads are a joke compared to them. Heel rise or hardness concerns, ok fine... I'd still be more much more prone to trim the Salomon pad's height than put a terribly-shaped simple wedge in them.

Yeah..Salomon had it right.

try it out
just take the remz pad
push it in the boot to get an imprint of the pin
just cut a little hole in the heel pad for the pin and then you dont have to cut the pin off
you never feel the pin
it worked for me for months but then i decided i like the stock pads more.
i had always used thin pads tho
so the thickness of salos pads is new to me but i think its way better

I can't think of a skate that isn't flat other than cults/nimh and roces/valo. Most skates do come with shock absorbers though. I think TRS are the only skates that don't, and even those skates come with a raised heel in the liner.

the TRS insole has a shock pad and the boot heel is only raised like a quarter of an inch
