Blue is the News Feed (which has changed again to further shove Top Stories down our throats). Red is the new thing that your pic is referring to. From what it seems, unlike the News Feed that shows you certain activity, this shows you every fucking thing everyone does even if they are commenting and liking statuses of people you don't know.

also, I should be able to choose if I want to see recent updates or top stories... if only there were an option for that

See mine was different even yesterday. It had top stories by default at the top and then you had to scroll down to the recent stuff. No option. You can't really tell in that picture, but there is a small blue triangle in the upper left corner of each story. You are supposed to click that to mark it as a top story and facebook will then show you more posts like this as top stories in the future. However it decides that.

Now it appears I'm locked into a recent stories mode and now can't see top stories anymore. So it's like they made a pretty drastic change and then back peddled some.

None of my family lives within 250 miles of me, and I really don't hang out with anyone except people I work with. I would rather talk to people on the phone/Skype than watch from the shadows of facebook and silently curse everyone who uses the platform to bitch about their jobs.
