Recently Ive been wondering why I chose to blade when I was younger, when so many other kids skateboarded or played mainstream sports. Surely, if we're all subject to social influence, I should have stuck at football or rugby or that sort of ting.
But most of us didnt. We skated all the time, got heavily involved in our respective scenes. I garbled away on bemag, other friends started shops, some did vids or pictures, some just sessioned.
Anyway, what I wondered was, our scene is so tightly knit, does that breed apathy? Do most bladers feel feel a faint, nagging sense that the only other people that really understand us are other skate kids? Everyone that didnt blade: inconsequential sheeple?

and to answer your question, yes and no. people outside of rollerblading will never understand many things about it. at the same time, other people know what it is to be part of a sport and that there are things that outsiders won't get

2 things:
1) You try it, maybe even by chance, and you like it so you stick with it. It's pretty easy for us to see why it's fun.
2) It's a small pond. Easier to find your place as a big fish in a small pond.

you cant tell people about stuff like that, you have to show them
in my classroom at college there are some exposed girders where i have landed bottle after bottle on the inside flange. everybody else started trying to do it now too.
i have turned my entire class into bottle flippers

as for all that other stuff op mentioned, i got into skating because i saw it on tv in the early 90s and thought it was cool. ive been skating since i was 5 or so. i stuck with it because nobody else did it and it made me unique.
i do also feel like the only people that understand bladers are either bladers, occasionally skateboarders, and seldomly bikers. everybody else is lost
