View Full Version : Gaps making a comeback?
A few years ago I was reading an interview with Brandon Smith where he said the days of big gaps are over, and blading is no longer about who can gap the biggest set. He considered all the leap of faith attempts to be foolish and saw tech skating as the "matured" version of skating. Recently though, as in these WRS edits for example, skaters seem to be doing gaps more. They aren't doing little gaps to show off their illusion abstract spins either, these are big gaps that are being 180'ed. I for one am glad to see this as I love gaps and I think gaps help separate blading from other sports. Anyone else notice this? What are your thoughts? Are gaps cool or stupid? Is this thread stupid?

threads stupid
Skateboarders and bikers do monstrous gaps. No separation there.

It's no where near as frequent though, and monster gaps in blading are different than monster gaps in skateboarding. The gap that made the cover of transworld magazine was massive, and was talked about on every skateboarding messageboard and has become legendary. Mark Wojda fakie 720'd the set (which is ~6 stairs shorter than the ledge roll) and the clip didn't even make it to the video because it looked sloppy.

Gaps are good, I've beed nervous blading would turn into skateboarding sized garbage... 6 inch long grinds on shin high ledges and 5 stair handrails. I feel a far lower standard of skating is accepted now than was 4-5 years ago. The 'tech' skating today is good and a great evolution... for PRO skaters, but it allows gromets to think that they can be big and profesional only skating small objects and learning a few difficult tech tricks, which is annoying as shit to watch.

I agree with this, except that the standards are different now that before. I'm glad people now have to grab tricks, land fakie, and otherwise clean up their style, but it has led to smaller tricks. I feel like now people are doing bigger stuff with higher standards than before. Best of both worlds?
The issue with tech blading is people who aren't technical or stylish trying to blade in that fashion.

Word, people used tech skating to skip past talent and then thought they were dustin latimer.

Fully agree. Overemphasize it with clothing style too.
powerblading is to blame.

Nah I think gaps went out of style long before powerblading took off.

Cess slides first, probably.
neo im pretty sure all 3 of those things are already back in.
In the last month we 've had 'Bring back Cess Slides' and ' gaps making a comeback'.
Where have they been? Who have they been with? Why are they coming back now?

Rolling grinds should make a comeback. If you haven't hobo'd in the last month, you're doing it wrong.
back to basics with the powerblading? learn how to roll before try to grinds ???
it s a cycle..
Gaps are awesome, they are the crucial thing that made me fell in love with rollerblading.
Also, big and hard shit will always crush "stylish and creative" crap that people like to groom about.
Just look at Aragon, doing some hardass shit (fakie 450 savannah WTF) , difficult obstacles, gapping and spinning like a madman, and all that with tons of style.

Im really hoping the direction bladings taking is going to end up with buck tricks and gaps but with todays awareness of style and tech tricks. I'm getting so sick of watching edits of groms that grind 3 foot long rails and over squat the landing and waiter arm the shit out of it. Look at Sean kelsos wrs edit, ill admit I could do like 2 tricks maybe in it but I would rather watch his underestimated section cause its just overall more enjoyable to watch, there's just no balls in tapdancing on curbs and we need balls

Rollerblading is sick, diversity keeps things interesting, evolution is okay
